A Historical Site
Founded in 1972, Firestone was the first major estate winery established in this pastoral Central
Coast AVA. Over the past 40 years it has evolved into one of the regions most popular and successful
producers thanks to a portfolio of wines that offer serious quality at reasonable prices.
The Firestone estate is situated near the charming little town of Los Olivos, two hours north of Los
Angeles and five hours south of San Francisco. Los Olivos is known for its old west feel, fine
restaurants and homey lodgings. The local vibe is placid, casual and peaceful. The surrounding
countryside is typical of rural California with rolling hills that morph seasonally from summer gold to
winter green.
Firestone Tours
In addition to its featured and reserve tasting options, Firestone is
one of the few wineries that offers a comprehensive and
complimentary public tour, running daily at 11:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m.
and 3:15 p.m. After the 30-minute in-depth tour, guests can picnic
outside and view the estate vineyards, which have been planted on a
series of mesas.
Reservations at Firestone
To make reservations or to get more information, visit
www.firestonewine.com or call (805) 688-3940. Firestone Vineyard is
located at 5017 Zaca Station Road in Los Olivos, just a few miles east
of Highway 101 at the southern end of the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail.
Experiences at Firestone
Firestone also boasts one of the most popular tasting rooms in
Santa Barbara County. The lovely visitors center has an expansive
island bar backed by a large picture windows that looks out on the
vines. For special private events, Firestone has a handful of indoor
and outdoor areas suitable for weddings, receptions, private parties,
corporate gatherings, birthdays or anniversaries.

EBERLE WINERY
VIP Tasting
One of the best ways to explore Eberle wines is through a private
tasting in the caves VIP Room. This gorgeous cove in the cave is the
perfect place for an educational tasting that includes a selection of
cheese paired with wine. The host assigned to the tasting is well versed
in the wine world and can answer questions regarding the wines,
winemaking techniques, and even how and where where the grapes are
grown. VIP tastings are offered for up to 10 people at $35 per person,
and must be reserved in advance.
One of the first changes was to hire Chris Eberle as Winemaker. Chris, no relation to
Gary, worked at Eberle Winery from 2006 to 2009 as Assistant Winemaker. His experience
in six countries over the past fifteen vintages, in addition to his easy going attitude and
team spirit, is what prompted Gary to lour Chris back from Howard Park in Australia.
"From the vineyards to the caves to Gary and Marcy and the crew, this is like coming
home. I always knew I'd be back", stated Chris. With his previous experience at Eberle, he
hit the ground running.
Nick Compton, a winery team member for over two years, has been promoted to
Assistant Winemaker. With these changes the Eberle team is complete with talented and
motivated individuals.

Perfect Pairs
BY MELISSA VOGT
LE VIGNE WINERY
2012 Le Vigne Tannat Paired with
Roasted Pork Leg
It doesnt get any better than pairing an award-winning wine with
a well-cooked meal. Le Vigne Winerys 2012 Tannat, which received a
Gold medal and Best of Class award at both the Central Coast Wine
Competition and the Cal Expo Commercial Wine Awards, is the
perfect wine to pair with a hearty roasted pork leg.
Marinated for several days in a variety of tantalizing spices and
Le Vignes 2012 Tannat, then slow-cooked for roughly five hours, this
roasted pork leg proves to be one of the most flavorful pieces of meat
you will ever eat. The rich, luscious flavors of this hearty wine seep
deep into the pork leg, making it juicy and tender after roasting.
The Tannat, which is full of rich flavors of baked cherry rhubarb
pie and cinnamon with subtle notes of clove, fennel seed, vanilla and
lingonberry, pairs exceptionally well with the range of spices used to
prepare this pork leg. The allspice and juniper berries used in the
marinade really grab a hold of those baking spice notes in the wine;
the orange zest brings a bit of brightness and levity to the wine, and
the pungency of garlic and peppercorns brings a touch of earthy
spiciness to the palate.
Of course, the American oak used to age the wine also does
wonders with the flavors of the roasted pork leg; the oak
complements the smoky characteristics from the roasting, and the
wines vanilla and clove notes heighten the synergy of spices in which
the pork was marinated. This delicious roasted pork leg is best served
alongside Le Vigne Winerys 2012 Tannat, and is most certainly an
excellent pairing as we approach autumn.
Itching for a taste of Le Vigne Winerys Tannat, or any one of their
other fabulous wines? Visit the winery in Paso Robles at 5115 Buena
Vista Drive. The tasting room is open Sunday through Thursday
from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday through Saturday from
11:00 a.m. to 6:00p.m. Offering wine tasting, cheese and chocolate
pairings, as well as tours, Le Vigne Winery has just the right
experience for every guest.
If youre looking for something more than just your average wine
tasting, consider heading to Le Vigne Winery during Paso Robles
Harvest Wine Weekend. Hosted on October 16-18, Harvest Wine
Weekend brings locals and tourist together for a wide array of
festivities. Le Vigne Winery will be celebrating in style, so be sure to
visit www.levignewinery.com for more details as the event weekend
nears!

Mamas Meatball:
Fine Italian Restaurant
and Catering in San Luis Obispo
Ask locals or somebody in the restaurant businessa bartender, a
waiter, even a bus boywhat they think of Mamas Meatball in San
Luis Obispo and their eyes roll towards the heavens as they breathe a
deep sigh; that is how good Mamas Meatball is. Set in a small
courtyard off of one of the towns main streets in a place called the
Old Creamery, Mamas Meatball is actually divided in two. On the
right is the takeout where people line up to get their orders of
meatballs and more. To the left, fronted by a huge-trunked tree and a
water fountain, is the intimate restaurant with its mural of the
Mediterranean across the back.
Meatballs aside, the restaurant, under owner and chef Nicola
Allegretta, offers a wide range of authentic Italian dishes. Among
them are half a dozen soups, a long list of salads (including grilled
salmon and a refreshing pear and gorgonzola), some wonderful
antipasto choices, both hot and cold paninis (including, of course,
one made with meatballs) and plenty of pasta dishesthe Ravioli di
Pollo all Vodka, homemade ravioli filled with chicken and served in a
vodka sauce, cannot go unmentioned. There is also a heady selection
of meat and fish dishes as well as any number of traditional and
specialty pizzas, and some far too-tempting desserts.
For a visit to the most authentic fine Italian restaurant in town,
head to Mamas Meatball, located in the Old Creamery plaza at 570
Higuera Street in San Luis Obispo.

Coquard Presses
The winery has the only two Coquard grape
presses in North Americaequipment key to
making high quality sparkling wine. Dave states,
Consistently, the juice coming out of our Coquard
presses was cleaner and more gently pressed,
resulting in less of the harsh characters brought
about by excess pressing of the stems, skins and
seeds. It was at this point that we decided moving
forward, all sparkling wine fruit was only to be
pressed in our Coquard presses.

n the southern end of the Central Coast appellation, lies Santa Barbara Countys historic
wine growing region. The first vineyard production in these rolling coastal hills dates
back to 1782, when Junipero Serra planted vines on Mission land. About a hundred years later,
there was 260 acres of luscious vineyards and seventeen winemakers in Santa Barbara
County. Sadly, the Prohibition Era destroyed many of these historic vineyard sites and mostly
put an end to winemaking in the regionas was the case in many of the beautiful winegrowing regions across the state. With that being said, the spirit and passion for winemaking
never left Santa Barbara County, and this wine growing region is alive and well today. Talented
winemakers are producing outstanding and pure terroir driven wines from the five American
Viticultural Areas (AVAs), planted mostly to Burgundian, Rhne and Bordeaux grape varieties.
Although the movie Sideways is said to have put San Barbara Countys wine growing
region on the map in 2004, especially the Santa Maria Valley AVA, it is the high quality of the
wine across the county that has continued to uphold this bountiful regions reputation.
Sprawling vineyards and gently rolling hills create a picturesque scene for visitors and locals
alike, who visit the many wineries, tasting rooms and wine bars in the area. In the five AVAs,
wine tasters will find a nice range of wine styles amongst the Burgundian, Rhne and
Bordeaux varietals that are produced.
In the more northern region, cool climate Burgundian varietals reign, such as Pinot Noir
and Chardonnay, due to the maritime influence. This ensures a long temperate growing
season which the Burgundian varietals crave. With ample amount of sunlight, the grapes ripen
very slowlyperfect for producing terroir driven wines with pure varietal characteristics. In
the southern region, there is more of a diurnal shift with warmer nights and cooler days. This
area sees less fog and has different soil types than what is found closer to the coast. The
Bordeaux and Rhne varieties flourish in this warmer climate and the sandy soils with limestone and chalk impart a wonderfully desirable minerality in the wines.
The wineries in Santa Barbara County boast a concentration of incredibly passionate and
talented winemakers; join them year round at their many events, celebrations and festivals, as
well as in their tasting rooms.

Brian Loring plainly states, my obsession is Pinot Noir, and unabashedly describes himself as a Pinot
freak. His sister, Kimberly, is co-owner and co-winemaker, and shares his passion for Pinot. Pouring a
variety of highly rated Pinots in their tasting room on Highway 246 in Buellton, the Lorings strive to bring
their love of Pinots to their guests. Sourcing grapes from twelve distinctive vineyards throughout
Californiastretching from the Sonoma Coast to Santa Barbarathey produce Pinots reflective of each
vineyards individual terroir, microclimate and specific clones. Of the diverse range of Pinots offered, Brian
states, It would be boring if everything we made tasted the same.
Join the wine club to insure shipments of Loring wines and to receive exclusive benefits. In addition to
discounts, tastings and the annual pick up party, depending on the wine club level chosen, benefits may
also consist of barrel tastings, vineyard tours, blending event, a vineyard picnic lunch and other events
with Winemakers Brian and Kimberly Loring.

Bob named his winery after the Chumash Native American word
for California poppy to honor the indigenous people of the Central
Coast and Channel Islands. Bob decided to add an accent to the final
syllable to designate the pronunciation (kyoo-pay') as several sounds
of the Chumash language have been obscured with time.

Lucio sums up his passion and what he tries to impart to each
guest: Our wines are immediately approachable, but hold up well
with age. Byron, primarily, is a Pinot houseshowing what the best
of the Santa Maria Valley has to offer. Our wines have a soul and are
an art form, and we try to convey that to each and every guest
honoring us with their presence. Cheers to Lucio! Treat yourself to a

Deep Sea Wines are a product of passion for the Conway Family,
whose love of Santa Barbara wine and coastal vineyards is celebrated
in every bottle of Deep Sea. The Conway Family calls Santa Barbara
home, and has always been inspired to produce wines that represent
the coastal influence and unique climate of the region. From this
place, inspiration has produced a variety of wines each speaking of
their origins. Their wines can be tasted at the Santa Barbara tasting
room, located on Stearns Wharf.
The tasting room offerings include the Deep Sea label featuring
wines made from the estate vineyard, as well as other coastal
vineyards. This brand appeals to the modern wine drinker, and
reflects the true passion of the Conways, the ocean and wine. Also
available are wines from the Conway label, which are region specific,
celebrating varieties best suited to their respective appellations. These
bottlings include Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, Chardonnay
from Santa Barbara and Pinot Noir from Sta. Rita Hills. This is an
elevated brand produced from outstanding lots, resulting in wines
of excellent quality, character and agability, explains Gillian Conway.
The Deep Sea tasting room has an experience for every type of
wine taster. Taking in the view of the Pacific Ocean while drinking
Central Coast wine is unbeatable! The wine menus consist of
different tasting options, including, White Only, Red Only and
mixed flights. Deep Sea also offers wine by the glass or bottle with
reasonable pricing. The tasting room hours are Monday through
Thursday from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Friday through Sunday
12:00 to 9:00 p.m. The outdoor patio and deck is now heated and
open at night, for lounging and tasting. Another way to enjoy the
tasting room is to rent it out for private parties; they can accomodate
up to 49 guests. For more information, call (805) 618-1185.

water bottle and SAG vehicle support. For more advanced riders and
serious wine and bike enthusiasts, Santa Barbara Wine Country
Cycling also offers deluxe multi-day trips that feature longer biking
routes, luxurious overnight accommodations and fabulous wine
pairing dinners. We are happy to accommodate any food allergies or

Carmel to Santa Barbara and Paso Robles to Santa Barbara, for an
authentic Central Coast wine experience.
Customized Experiences
Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours can also custom
design a bike tour through wine country to accommodate your

surroundings that you cant see as you drive past. If you prefer to rent
a bike on your own without a preplanned path, both hybrid, alloy
and carbon road bikes are available for the day or for multiple days.
Before you know it, youll be peddling through Santa Barbaras
stunning vineyards, able to stop exactly when and where you want,
knowing that your bike is taken care of by professional riders so its
always in excellent shape. Or if riding is not your thing, they also
offer guided hikes for all levels that take in valley and ocean vistas. So

No need to travel hours by train or plane to escape to wine country; residents of Southern
California can get in the car and drive (often less than an hour) to Ventura County, where more
than 9 wineries call home. Grapes are grown locally in Camarillo, Malibu and Oxnard in addition
to being brought in from top wine growing regions all over California. The winery personnel are
exceptionally friendly and welcoming. Take a day off to enjoy the cool ocean breezes and valley
warmth with the wines produced in your backyard.
