MACHINING, MILLWRIGHT AND NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING
The online format of D2L will give students the opportunity to discuss important issues, access websites and review
materials covered in the course. These courses are the first part of the required 40 hours of training per the NRCan
guidelines. For some NDT online courses, to be certified under the CGSB certification scheme, students will need to
take the 16-hour hands-on lab component separately.
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a very important component of many industries such as oil and gas, manufacturing,
transportation and aviation, to name a few. Identifying potential mechanical and structural failures can save time,
money and lives. This 15-week program enables you to enter the growing NDT field by providing a basic overall
knowledge of the inspection industry, and a foundation to progress through all levels of inspection methods. Online/
blended learning option available.

PETROLEUM, POWER ENGINEERING AND INSTRUMENTATION
Fourth Class is the starting point for those looking to work with high pressure boilers. Successful completion of Part A
and B prepares students to write the government Part A Exam (in Alberta). In order to write the government Part B,
you must have six months of relevant government approved work experience. The SAIT course can be completed
without experience. In Alberta, this course credits six months of work experience towards the required 12 months. If
you are located outside of Alberta, please contact your provincial boilers branch.
Fifth Class prepares you to take the Provincial Fifth Class Power Engineering exam or the equivalent low-pressure
heating plant certificate provincial exam. Provinces may recommend this course as study material for heating plant
certificate examinations other than Fifth Class. In Alberta, this course credits six-months work experience towards the
required 12 months. If you are outside of Alberta, please contact your provincial boilers branch for more information
regarding government certification. Contact information can be found on sopeec.org.
86
Completion of Second Class Part A and B will provide you with up to nine months credit in lieu of the 24 months
operating experience in a power plant required to write the Provincial Government exam in Alberta. The price for
distance courses does not include the cost of textbooks. Note: Alberta Boiler and Pressure Vessel safety will accept
satisfactory completion of Part A of the Second Class course as the educational requirements necessary for
individuals to qualify to take their Second Class Examination. If outside of Alberta, you must check with your
provincial boilers branch prior to taking this course.

As production from conventional sources continues to decline, the energy sector is looking more and more toward
shale gas and tight oil and gas to keep up with rising demand. It is well known that the technologies needed to exploit
these resources require a large amount of water. This program is designed to provide a foundational overview of the
water management cycle within the petroleum industry. It will focus specifically on the interdependence of activities
in petroleum resource development and will give students proficiency in a number of basic water management skills.
If you are taking the full certificate program, we recommend you take these courses in the order listed below.
