VOLUME 39 N UMBER 27 | SEP T E MBER 6, 2015

Dear Eastminster Family,

Thank you for the positive response Sunday as our new logo was
unveiled. (Yes, thats it you see in the masthead.) To help you
best understand the logo, let me share a little about the people,
the process and the meaning.

Twelve members who all have skills in the communications

arena graciously worked on this project. Please join me in
thanking: Ginger Bates, Laura Bayne, Caroline Bennett, Lynn
Bradley, Frank Brown, Florence Gailey, Sharmin Hill, Don Jeter,
Janet Katz, Katie McElveen, Kevin O' Connell, and Katie Alice
Walker for serving in this way.
The process of producing the new logo began a year ago and included an on-line survey
completed by more than 200 of you, the engagement of a PR firm to produce the image,
personal interviews, a review of our Vision 2020 plan, tweaking of the proposed image, the
unanimous support of our Communications Ministry, the unanimous support of the Session and, now, integrating the image into the life of the church family.
Meaning and symbolism behind the new logo:
-Cross is central, a darker color to draw your eye;
-Cross is open to represent God's reaching out to us and of our call to reach out to others;
-Cross is similar to the Jerusalem cross and like the crosses in our chancel woodwork;
-Overall shape is circular and includes light blue, darker blue and green colors;
-Circular shape reminds us that God is sovereign over all creation;
-Blues and green remind us that God has created the water, the skies, and the firmament;
-Light blue also represents baptism even as the green symbolizes growth;
-Rounded outer edge of the image also represents God's love and forgiveness;
Each of the four quadrants around the cross contains an image that symbolizes:
-People, represented by the variety of colors, being drawn to God;
-Arrows that point to the centrality of the cross and of Jesus' sacrificial death and resurrection;
-Doves descending on the cross, representing the Holy Spirit.
As a whole, the image conveys both a sense of our Gathering together, drawn by God,
and of our Reaching Out, sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ in both word and deed.
While it takes time to develop comfort and familiarity with a new logo, I hope you like this
image. More than that, I pray we will all experience continuing growing in Christ because,
ultimately, the meaning associated with any logo is only as strong as the people who live out
the values and meaning symbolized in the artwork.
See you Sunday,
