Susan is a native of Ajo, AZ
where she works as the
Lead Behavioral Health
Clinician at Desert Senita
Community Health Center
(DSCHC). Susan provide
general mental health
counseling services,
specializing in patient’s
behavioral changes to
compliment their medical
treatment.

Dating Violence Bill Introduced to Arizona
Senate
Arizona may be the next to
pass a law that will require
school districts governing
boards to consider providing
a curriculum and policies with
regards to Dating Abuse for
middle, junior high and high
school. Senate Bill 1308
School Instruction/dating
abuse proposes an
amendment to Arizona Title
15, Chapter 7, Article 1 by
adding section 15-712.01
relating to school curriculum.
The bill was presented to the
Arizona Senate by District 10
Senator Linda Gray (R) and
sponsored by Senators Nancy
Young Wright (D) and Judy M.
Burges (R) and passed the
Senate on February 22, 2010
after its third reading. The bill
must pass through the House
before it will be enacted into
law.
If passed, school districts in
Arizona may prescribe and
enforce policies and
procedures to address
incidents of dating abuse
involving students at school
that may be based on a model
dating abuse policy developed
by the Department of
Education.
One of the stipulations within
the bill if a school district
governing board elects to
adopt dating abuse instruction
and policies is all
P.E.A.C.E
administrators, teachers,
counselors and health care
professionals who are
employed at middle, junior
high and high schools to
complete required dating
abuse training. The training
would include identifying the
warning signs of dating abuse
as well as a review of the
school district’s dating abuse
policy to ensure all employees
are able to appropriately
respond to incidents at school.
The school district will also
have the option to provide
training to parents/guardians
about dating abuse.
Each school district governing
board will have until June 30,
2011 to hold a public meeting
to review and consider the
adoption of a dating abuse
curriculum and policies.
Rhode Island passed the
Lindsey Ann Burke Act in
2009 and has reported
successes thus far. Since the
act’s inception, they have
obtained 100% compliance
within their school districts for
completing their dating
violence policies as required
by the law. Teachers and
administrators from around
the state have reported
positive results in regards to
how their training has
impacted them and there is
more student education in this
area going on than ever
before. As a health teacher
herself, Ann has from several
students who said they used
their education in this area to
get either themselves or a
friend out of an abusive
relationship.
The Lindsey Ann Burke
Memorial Foundation is
currently creating a training
DVD through a workshop and
collaboration of school staff
support and health care
teachers and professionals
and will be available at end of
this school year. With the
number of resources currently
available to utilize, the need
for the Arizona to reinvent the
wheel can be averted. Liz
Claiborne of Love is Respect
has created a wonderful
curriculum, Love is Not
Abuse, which they will send
out at no cost to the
requester.
Having a curriculum in the
public schools educating and
bringing awareness to
students about Dating
Violence will reinforce healthy
relationships for our children.
The young people of today
are the adults of tomorrow.
Our future depends on
properly educating our young
people to encourage a
peaceful outlook.

Kaity’s Way Logo Explained part 3
P.E.A.C.E. (Patience,
Empathy, Acceptance,
Caring, Equality)
This acronym actually
came to us quite easily.
All we really did was think
of two things: Kaity and
what is required to have
Peace. Being that Kaity
was a very peaceful
person it was not hard to
put the two together and
come up with what we did.
Kaity was a very patient
and caring person on all
levels. She understood
that all things happen
Kaity’s Way Volunteer Support
Kaity’s Way is currently
holding its third raffle
drawing with multiple
chances to win. All
proceeds will benefit
Kaity’s Way. Tickets are
on sale now and can be
purchased from any
Kaity’s Way Volunteer.
The drawing will be held
on April 17, 2010 and
you do not need to be
present to win.
Prizes include two (2)
open round trip airline
tickets provided by
AirTran.
A night on the town can
be complimented with a
dinner for two certificates
from Rosita’s Fine
Mexican Food
Restaurant and more
when they are supposed
to and it is best to take
care when they do.
Kaity was empathetic and
accepting towards all
living things—large and
small. Once, we were
having coffee at Starbucks
on the patio when a few
birds flew down for some
crumbs. Kaity noticed one
black bird in particular that
had a deformed talon. The
deformed talon didn’t
seem to bother the bird
one bit, but Kaity took to
the bird feeding it crumbs.

Shortly after Kaity passed
away, this particular bird
visited us at our home. It
was such a warm feeling
for us. Empathy really
goes along way.
Because Kaity was raised
with two brothers and two
sisters equality was
essential in her
upbringing. She exhibited
daily what she was
taught—everyone must be
treated equal as we are all
living beings with a
purpose. This is exactly
how Kaity treated all living
beings.
