1. INTRODUCTION-

Developers Nish Developers Private Limited, Mumbai, has undertaken the

work of construction of Sale Building having one basement + eight upper
floors podiums + fifty four upper floors RCC framed structure, in the plot
area of New Islam Mills Compound, Mahadev Palav Marg, Currey Road,
Mumbai.
M/S Mahimtura Consultants Private Limited, Mumbai are the Consulting
Engineer for the said Buildings.
Prof. G. B. Chaudhari, Mumbai is the Geotech Consultant for the said work.
M/S Ideal Geotechnical Services, Mumbai was entrusted the work of sub
surface ground geotechnical exploration adopting rotary drilling method.

Accordingly, the party has under taken the work of drilling boreholes BH
No. 6 and BH No. 7 and completed the work under the guidance of Prof. G.

Similarly, M/S Zed Geotechnics & Constructions, Mumbai was entrusted the
work of sub surface ground geotechnical exploration adopting rotary
drilling method. Accordingly, the party has under taken the work of drilling
boreholes BH No. 8, BH No. 9, BH No.10 and BH No. 11 and completed the
work under the guidance of Prof. G. B. Chaudhari, Geotech Consultant.
Prior to starting the field exploration work, site visits were made to inspect
the site conditions and to decide the locations of exploratory bore holes.
Later on site visits were made to inspect the field works and inspect the soil,
rock and water samples collected through rotary drilling and subsequently to
select the samples of soil, water and rock cores for laboratory testing. All
these samples were properly numbered and rock core samples, spt samples
were preserved in wooden boxes.
Necessary tests were conducted on water and rock core samples in V.J.T.I.,
Matunga, Mumbai. Bore hole logs and laboratory test results are attached at
the end of the report.
Based on the field inspections, considering the borehole logs and laboratory
test results and taking in to account the type of building, following report is
presented here with incorporating recommendation for type of foundation,
net safe allowable bearing capacity of rock for foundation design and
additional precautions/suggestions to be adopted in foundation design and
constructions.

3. GEOLOGY OF THE SITE AREAThe site area is occupied by Deccan Traps. The Deccan Traps of India are
made up of continental flood basalt (CFB). In the Mumbai area the Deccan
Basalt lava flows were accompanied by significant amounts of felsic lava
(Rhyolite, Trachyte) and pyroclastic materials (Tuff, Breccias), as well as
extensive deposits derived from sub-aqueous volcanism (Spilite, Tachylite,
Hyaloclastite). The whole sequence shows a strong tectonic dip towards the
west (Arabian Sea) by as much as by 20, and is the part of Panvel flexure.
Many dykes and intrusions were formed cut of the lavas and pyroclastic
rocks. Many Mumbai lava flows are commonly separated by intertrappean
fresh water sedimentary beds or red boles. Mumbai exhibits widespread
intrusive activity in the form of dyke swarms and other intrusions.
Petrographic study conducted on in hand rock cores specimen selected from
drilled holes in the proposed site area has revealed the presence of fresh
spilitic basalt rock, fresh basalt rock and fresh amygdaloidal basalt rock in
sub surface ground up to about 33m depths below G. L.

Following tests were conducted on rock core samplesi) Dry density, water absorption & porosity
ii) Unconfined compression test
iii) Point load test
iv) Modulus of elasticity
v) Visual/Megascopic Petrography

5. BEARING CAPACITY OF HARD SOILIn the plan area of Sale Buildings, rock stratum is available at shallow
depths and there fore, determination of bearing capacity of hard soil may not
be useful. How ever, considering in situ spt N value of 50 for hard soil, net
safe allowable bearing pressure for given settlements can be evaluated. In
general, hard soil can sustain 40t/sq.m stress for 40mm settlement of rcc
footing foundations resting on hard soil.

Page-14
6. BEARING CAPACITY OF ROCK-

Ultimate bearing capacity of rock stratum can be worked out by determining

in laboratory unconfined compression strength of rock cores. Herein it is
assumed that unconfined compression strength of rock core is equal to
ultimate strength of rock mass. Then adopting a factor of safety value of 3 to
10, the net safe bearing capacity of rock stratum can be obtained. It may be
noted that in situ rock stratum is in confined condition and there fore it can
exhibit much higher strength than the unconfined compression strength of
rock cores determined/evaluated in laboratory.
Referring to laboratory test results on rock cores of BH Nos. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
and 11, it is noted that the unconfined compression strength of rock cores is
ranging between 168 kg/sq.cm (BH No. 6- at depths- 13.4m) to 1012
kg/sq.cm (BH No. 8- at depth 7m to 8m) for grayish basalt/ amygdaloidal
basalt/spilitic basalt rock cores.
Considering the lower value of unconfined compression strength of rock
cores, equal to 300kg/sq.cm, for rock strata at 7m to 8m depths, and
adopting a factor of safety value of 10, the net safe bearing capacity for rock
stratum works out equal to 30 kg/cm i.e. 300t/sq.m.
The modulus of elasticity of rock cores was determined by conducting
unconfined compression test on saturated rock cores with measurement of
axial loads corresponding to a given deformation of rock cores under the
axial loads. All these test results are presented graphically at the end of this
report. From the results of modulus of elasticity of rock cores, in general, it
was noted that lower value of modulus of elasticity is of the order of
100000kg/sq.cm. These values are evaluated at about 50% of ultimate load
on rock cores. In general, in situ values of rock mass will be much lower in
magnitude because of the low stress level on in situ rock mass and may be of
the order of 10000 kg/sq.cm for footing and 20000 kg/sq.cm for raft
foundation.

Page-15
Then, immediate settlement of 2.5m wide square footing resting on rock
mass at and below 5m depths and loaded with 30kg/sq.cm stress can be
ascertained using expression given below.
S = [q B (1 - 2) I]/E = 30 x 250 x (1 0.15 x 0.15) x 0.8/ 10000
= 0.59cms = 5.9 mms is < 50mms. O. K.
7. CONCLUSION-

From the above said information it is concluded thati) In the plot area of the proposed sale building, grey colour basalt rock /
grey colour amygdaloidal basalt rock / grey colour spilitic basalt rock is met
at depths between 5m to 30m in the borehole Nos. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. The
safe bearing capacity of this rock stratum is 300t/sq.m. In this rock mass, in
general, the rate of drilling for per one meter depth of rock mass using
diamond coring bits with double core barrel is about 100minutes.
ii) Ground water level was located at about 1.5m to 3m depths. This was sub
surface drainage accumulated water.
Ground water is containing aggressive chemicals well within permissible
limits and there fore is not harmful towards concrete and mild steel
reinforcements. However, the minimum grade of concrete in sub structure
foundations shall not be less than M4o grade.
iii) Consider individual/ or combined / or raft foundation as foundation
system for sale building.
The shape of RCC foundations in elevation shall be rectangular blocks.
It is to be noted that the minimum size of RCC footing foundation in plan
shall not be less than 2.5m x 2.5m.
iv) The minimum depth of excavation below G. L. to accommodate RCC
foundation and one basement will not be less than about 5m and RCC
foundations will rest in/on basalt rock/amygdaloidal basalt rock/spilitic
basalt rock stratum.
