A Worn Path

Number 1:

• From her physical appearance, I can conclude that her economic

condition was not good or she was a poor woman. I said like that because it is
showed by these prologue:
• She carried a thin, small cane made from an umbrella,
• She wore a dark striped dress reaching down to her shoe tops, and an equatly
long apron of bleached sugar sack, with afull pocket: all neat and tudy, but time
she took a step she might have fallen over her shoelace, which dragged from
her unlaced shoes.
• Under the rag, her hair came down on her neck in the frailest of ringlets, still
black, and with an odor like copper.
• I think she has taken the path before because she known well
about her direction of her destination so that she knew exactly what she had to do.
She also knew the animals that were in the path. It is showed by:
• “She walked slowly in the dark pine shadows, moving alittle from side to side
in her step, with the balanced heaviness of pendulum in a granfather clock”.
That sentence shows that she ever passed that way before so that she didn’t
walked fast because she knew that way.
• “something always take a hold of me on this hill-pleads I should stay”
In that speech the word “always” shows that, it was not the first time for her to
pass the path. She passed the path before.
• She could pass the log that was laid across lthe creek by shutting her eyes. She
also could pass the barbed wire fence safely. It shows that she had been
accustomed her self in passing all of that, so that she had no any difficulty in
passing those obstacles.
• I think she was accustomed to being alone. I say like that because she
did every thing by her own self. We can see it, she went to the city by passing the
long journey with some obstacles eventhough she is an old woman. If she was not
accustomed to being alone, she didn’t need to go to city to find out the medicine
for her grandson. She only asked someone to do that, but she didn’t do that.
• I think she talked to animals because she was lonely, it was one way to
skip her lonely.
• I think she imagined a boy offering her a piece of cake because she
was a poor woman. She wanted to eat delicious foods, but she had no money to
buy it, so that only could imagine about that.
• I think her speech shows that she had no good education because her
speech was not arranged correctly. Beside that, she claimed her self that she was
an old woman with no education. Her speech also shows her background that she
was from a village that is far from the city.

Number 2:

• The plot of this stoty are:

1. The prologue of this story tells about the major character, her name,
her age, her physical appearance and her background.
2. The journey of the major character where she found some animals in
her way to her destination and some obstacles that came from the natural and
the hunter.
3. The major character arrived in the town and meet a lady that helped
her to lace up her shoe
4. The major character arrived at the place that she wanted ( the hospital)
5. The explaination about why the major character takes a long journey
from her house to the town.
6. The problem is unqualified happiness.
• The antagonism that against the major character (Phoenix) are; her
age (she was an old woman, she was not strong anymore), the natural in her
destination (she found any obsracles in her way), her hopeless of her grandson
illness.
• I think in considiring to be in the grip of large and indifferent social
and political forces, the major character didn’t care about that. She only passed
her life lonely; she is accustomed to being alone.

Number 3

The descriptions of the story are:

1. Exposition;
The exposition in this story is in the beginning of the story where in this part is
intruducing the major character. Her name, about her physical appearance (include
her skin colour, and what she wore/ her dress) and her age.
The exposition in this story is not only at the beginning of story, but also at the end of
the story. It is showed by, the major character explain about her reason why she
decided to do along journey to town. She did it because her grandson was sick so that
she wanted to taken medicine for her grandson in the town.
2. Complication
The complication in this story began when she got any diffulties in her way. The
difficulties don’t only come from outside her self but also comes from inside her self.
The difficlties that come from outside her body are:
• She found some obstacles in her way such as she found animals,
• She had to pass obstacles in her way.
For examples, she had to pass a log that was laid across the creek, she had to pass a
thorny bush, she had to go through a barbed wire fence and also she meet a hunter
that given her some questions.
Complication in this story also appears at the end of the story when she recalled her
memory, why she made along journey to town.
3. Crisis
The crisis in this story is, when she decided to coninue her long journey to town
eventhough there were some obstacles in her way, even less she was an old woman.
4. Climax
The climax in thios story is when she was in the town and found the place that she
looked for (the hospital).
5. Resolution
The resolution in this story appears at the same time with the second complication.
The complication that I mean here is when the major character (Phoenix) forgot the
reason why she made a long journey to get in hospital. After that she recalled her
memorize why she was in hospital. At the same time the resolution appears. after she
knew she weas in the hospital because her grandson was sick and she wanted to get
medicine, she told the nurse about the reason. Finally, the nurse gave her a bottle of
medicine for her grandson.
• I think the story used the actual structure because in this story there
are exposition, complication, crisis, climax, and resolution. But on the other hand,
there are depart in some parts of this story. They are in the beginning and at the
end of story. Why I can say like that because we can see in some part, exposition
and complication appear twice, at the beginning and at the end of the story.

Number 4

Meaning of this dialogue:

“Doesn’t the gun scare you?” He said still pointing it.
“No sir, I seen plenty go off closer by, in my day, and for less than what I dine,” she
said, holding utterly still.
I think the meanig of this dialogue is the major character was not afraid of the gun
that is poted by the hunter. I think, she was not afraid because she knew her self that
she was and old woman, she had been life for a long time. Moreover she was a poor
woman, she had nothing, eventhough she die, nobody care about that. so she didn’t
need to be scared of anything.

Number 5

Yes, I share of those responses. I also have other responses:

1. I am amazed that Phoenix could make a long journey although she was an old
woman.
2. I am amazed that Phoenix scared of nothing eventhough she was a woman.
3. I really apreciate that she really loved her grandson. She found out the
medicine in the town sincerely, although she had to make a long trip with her
condition as an old woman.
