- Integers
are whole numbers
that
describe opposite
ideas in mathematics.
- Integers can either be negative(-), positive(+) or zero.
- The integer zero is neutral. It is neither positive nor negative, but is an integer.
- Integers can be represented on a number line, which can help us understand the valve
of the integer.
Positive Integers
- Are to the right of zero
- Are valued greater than zero.
- The sign for a positive integer is (+), however the sign is not always needed.
- Meaning +3 is the same value as 3.
Negative Integers
- Are to the left of zero
- Are valued less than zero.
- Express ideas of down or a loss.
- The sign for a negative integer is (-). This sign is always needed.
Adding Integers
1) When the signs are the same, ADD and keep the sign.
Example:
(2)+(4)=6
3+7=10
2) When the signs are different, SUBTRACT and use the sign of the larger number.
Example:
(-2) + 4 = 2
2 + (-4) = -2
The Additive Inverse
The additive inverses (or opposites) of two numbers add to equal zero.
Example:
( 3 ) + (3 )=0
(4)+(4)=0
Subtracting Integers
Subtracting is the same as adding the opposite. (Keep-change-change)
When subtracting, change the subtraction to adding the opposite (keep-change-change) and then
follow your addition rule.
Example 1:
4(7)
4+(+7)
81 9=9
60 6=10
2. When multiplying or dividing integers whose signs are DIFFERENT, the answer will always
be NEGATIVE.
Positive x negative = negative
Negative x positive = negative
8 ( 4)=32
5 +7=35
33 (11 ) =3
4 2=2
2. Lilly bought 3 pairs of blue jeans at P735 each. How much money did she pay the clerk?
3. The Minnesota State golf team has 4 golfers that are each 6 on their rounds for the day.
What is the team score?
4. Mina was drilling down through a 21-cm thick concrete floor to install a new plumbing pipe.
She drilled for 5 min, took a break, and then finished drilling in another 2 min. At what rate did
the drill cut through the floor, in centimeters per minute?
5. A school spent $384 to buy a set of 32 calculators. What was the cost of each calculator?
6. Without evaluating the quotients, identify the quotient with the least value. Explain your
reasoning.
