Dr. Dubroy:
We, the undersigned, express our support for our friend, colleague, instructor,
mentor, neighbor and Shaw University Band Director, Mr. Charles Vernon Brown. We
are OUTRAGED by the recent suspension which was unfairly executed by
administration. We are highly disturbed about the seemingly retaliatory manner in
which this private personnel matter was publicly played out in the media.
The band has always been an integral part to the success, enrollment and vision of
Shaw University. Whether it be the marching band, the concert band, the jazz or pep
bands - all have served as a strong marketing tool for student recruitment. Mr.
Brown has led the charge and has been a major part of the success of these
programs for over 34 years.
Mr. Brown, who is also a graduate of Shaw University has served as an incredible
source of inspiration for thousands of students from all over the country. His
aggressive recruitment eorts over the years have generated millions of dollars for
Shaw. His traditional and non traditional fundraising eorts speak volumes.
Additionally, many students, former band members and non band members alike,
credit Mr. Brown as a father figure, a support system and a positive influence

beyond the bandroom.

We ask that Shaw University quickly resolve this matter by reinstating Mr.
Brown.
