Celebrating Your Breathless Moments
Sisters Cynthia, Rebecca and Sharon
A Family Affair
When it comes down to it, Breathless Wines is a family affair, built by the
love of three sisters Rebecca, Sharon and Cynthia, and the passion for life
that their mother passed down to them.
The sisters are dedicated to creating refreshing sparkling wines that pair
well with lifes special moments. We wanted to do something in our Moms
honor, said Sharon Cohn. It was all about our breathless moments with
her, being involved in the community and giving back.
Breathless sparkling wines are handcrafted from select Sonoma County
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes using the traditional French method,
mthode champenoise, guided by the expert winemaking hand of Penny
Gadd-Coster. With 30 years experience in sparkling winemaking, Penny is
a renowned expert in the field having earned Winemaker of the Year in
the inaugural Wine Industry Awards, as well as hundreds of other honors.
Breathless has garnered over 20 Best of Class, Gold and 90+ point ratings
between its three wines and is recognized as one of the most distinguished
sparkling wine brands today. In July, Wine Enthusiast magazine placed
Breathless at the top of its list of 10 Best Sparkling Wines Under $30 in
the United States. Experience the bubbly at the temporary, pop up
Breathless tasting room located at 4001 Hwy 128 in Geyserville, in
breathtaking Alexander Valley. Open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.,
Breathless wines are available for $10 by the glass or flight (fees waived
when joining the wine club). Customers can experience the thrill of
sabering open their wine with a sword truly the most breathless way to
pop the cork!
Each year, Breathless sponsors the Key to the Closet at Wine, Women & Shoes

Huge Bear Wines have left the woods and moved to the city to become a mainstay in
downtown Calistoga. This inviting tasting room with a spirited and savvy staff will create an
unforgettable experience for adventurous visitors.
The tasting room opened this year on Valentines Day and the history of the building itself ties
in well with the historical background of Huge Bear and the companys rugged determination.
The owners discovered an article from the early 1900s that chronicled the adventures of a
Grizzly Bear that would come down from the nearby mountains searching for food often raiding
several homes of the Knights Valley inhabitants who lived in the area. This bear was never caught.
Huge Bear was named in tribute to this particular Grizzly Bear featured in the childrens book,
The Biggest Bear by Lynd Ward. After getting permission from the author/artists family, Huge Bear
was licensed to use the illustration featured on the label with one minor change the basket
originally contained apples and it was changed to grapes. Mr. Ward illustrated more than 200
books and most are now considered American classics. His works include six woodcut graphic
novels, of which four have recently been republished. He is also known for his art in watercolor,
oil, brush and ink, lithography and mezzotint.
Bears and grapes have long been important in California history and this is reflected in the
Great Seal of the State of California, which was adopted by the Constitutional Convention of 1849.
The seal was designed by Major R. S. Garnett of the United States Army, and proposed by Caleb
Lyon, a clerk of the convention. The Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva, has at her feet a grizzly
bear and clusters of grapes representing wildlife and agricultural richness. Near the upper edge of
the seal are 31 stars representing the number of states in the union with Californias becoming the
number 31. Just as in Greek mythology Minerva sprung full-grown from the head of Jupiter,
California became a state on September 9, 1850, without having to go through a territorial stage.
Huge Bear Winery has several varietals available for tasting all from Sonoma County.
Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and several others. Theres very
little left of 2008 Late Harvest Sauvignon Blancdont miss out!

TRINCHERO
NAPA VALLEY
A Taste of Terroir
Trinchero Napa Valley Produces Stellar Single-Vineyard Wines for the Serious Collector
Trinchero Napa Valley was founded in 1998 to commemorate fifty years of family
winemaking and honor the legacy of founder, Mario Trinchero. Wines bearing the Trinchero
Napa Valley label are luxury-class, predominantly single-vineyard wines from the familys Napa
Valley estates. Grapes are sourced from 200+ acres of estate vineyards in prime Napa Valley
appellations including St. Helena, Mt. Veeder, Rutherford and Atlas Peak.
For lovers of Bordeaux, this beautiful winery should be at the top of the list for any wine
country visit. Renowned winemaker Mario Monticelli handcrafts more than 12 different wines,
with total production limited to 12,000 cases. Trinchero Napa Valleys Bordeaux portfolio
includes Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit
Verdot. Many of these fine wines are produced in small lots and only available at the winery or
for wine club members.
Trinchero Napa Valley is located north of the town of St. Helena, on a knoll offering visitors
stunning views of the valley and mountains with Spring Mountain to the west and Howell
Mountain to the east.
The 22-acre site has 13 acres of Cabernet vines and houses the winery, hospitality center and
tasting room. Every detail of the design was conceived to create and share exceptional wines.
Ground has been broken on a new hospitality center, opening to the public in June of 2016.
Created to house Trincheros internationally recognized wine and culinary education programs,
the hospitality center will feature indoor and outdoor kitchens and dining, vinegar solera, woodburning ovens, reserve tasting room and cellar, and culinary gardens. A separate one-story
agrarian building will host the tasting room, public and private event space and administrative
offices. Large covered patios will flank the length of the tasting room.

SEQUOIA GROVE
VINEYARDS
When visiting Napa Valley for wine tasting, there are a multitude of experiences from
which to choose. Food and wine pairings, educational seminar tastings, vertical tastings of
consecutive vintagesthe list goes on and on. At Sequoia Grove Vineyards, located in the
heart of Napa Valley in Rutherford, the Taste for Cabernet experience offers guests an
intimate look at what elements of taste do and do not pair well with Cabernet Sauvignon.
Tasting Terroir
Drawing on his own knowledge of Napa Valley and using slides of vineyard images and
appellation maps, Busquaert delves deep into the terroir of each single vineyard bottling.
Tasting through the unique soils, elevations and sun exposures, guests identify and discuss
with Busquaert the influence of terroir and how it affects the finished wines. This tasting
shows you how when you move the same grape from location to location, it changes
drastically, Busquaert states.

New Releases
Summer brings new releases! The following new releases are
now available for tasting and purchase:
Blonde Tawny: This extremely popular white port, made from
Chardonnay and and a small amount of Verdelho, spends
eight years in barrel before release; the result is a perfect
pairing for shell fish, chowders and salads.
Madeline Late Harvest Riesling: This rare Riesling spends
two years in barrel, and is not a guaranteed annual release,
since it is extremely vintage-dependent. Lightly fortified, the
Madeline is perfect for the start or finish of any meal.

Peter Prager: Making Wines Few Winemakers Dare Attempt
Origins of a Family Business, Emphasis on Family
Imagine being a teenager and being told your fathers midlife crisis was relocating the
family from Orange County to the Napa Valley, where through perseverance and effort by
the whole family, the creation of some of the finest New World ports was the result.
Sounds like the makings of a movie, right? Well, actually, welcome to just the start of the
story that is Peter Pragers thirty-five years in the wine business. Napa is world-known for
its winemakers dry wines; however, almost no one has turned those techniques to
producing the same kind of range of sweet winesexcept for Jim and now Peter Prager,
that is, who have used that same fine winemakers eye for detail but applied in a different
fashion, honoring the tradition of long-lived, long-aging, always-representative-of-thevintage port wines. And not just with one or two. How about more than a half-dozen,
ranging from dry to off-dry to sweet, displaying the ability of port wines to pair with a
wide range of cuisines.
Jim Pragers first crush took place in an 1865-built carriage house on their property in
south St. Helena. Their first releases were Cabernet, Chardonnay, Zinfandel and the Noble
Companion Cabernet portall 120 cases of itin 1979. To this day, everyone at the
winery is a Prager by birth or marriage, and while Generation One is now comfortably
retired, Generations Two runs all aspects with Threeall twenty-two of themquickly

V. Sattui Launches New Tours, Wine & Food Pairing Menu
InstaSomm Tour
While it takes many years of study and
experience to become a Sommelier, youll be
one step closer after spending just 90
minutes with V. Sattui! This in-depth tour
gives guests a close up view of the different
grape varieties grown in the certified organic
Vittorios Vineyard, and what goes into
growing and harvesting those grapes at the
peak of flavor. Guests will follow the journey
of the grapes as they travel from the field to
the crush pad, to the fermenting tanks and
all the way to the bottle. Finally, they get to
experience the finished product in a seated
tasting, with a bite of house-made
charcuterie and an assortment of cheeses
from around the world.
Offered every Sunday at noon
Reservations are required
$65.00 members, $75.00 non-members
(only for guests 21 years and older)

V. Sattui Winery
V. Sattui Winery is a family-owned
property located in the heart of Napa Valley,
that was founded in 1885 and makes more
than 60 different wines with dozens of 90+
point rated wines among its current vintages.
V. Sattui wines are only sold direct to
consumer and the winery features three
beautiful tasting rooms where customers can
find and purchase their favorites. It is a
stunning, must-see Napa Valley destination
for picnics, weddings and events, offering an
impressively robust Cheese Shop with more
than 200 selections. Executive Chef Gerardo
Sainato and his staff create mouthwatering
salads, sandwiches, paninis, and entrees in
the Deli. V. Sattui also makes house-cured
meats from its own Salumeria, and gelato
and sorbetto from its own Gelateria. The
sprawling estate includes two-dozen picnic
tables nestled beneath ancient Valley Oak
trees and tri-level terraces that overlook
beautifully manicured gardens and vineyards.
V. Sattui wines are sustainably farmed

MAZZOCCO WINERY
Get your Zin on at Dry Creek Valleys Mazzocco
There are many reasons to go to Dry Creek Valleya region west of Healdsburg
known for its breathtaking beauty and quality red winesand tasting the Zinfandel at
Mazzocco Winery should be at the top of the list.
Rich and spicy, full of fruit, the small, sustainable winery on Lytton Springs Road
produces a mighty Zinfandel that attracts connoisseurs and newbies from all around.
People have cult favorites, said Rob Izzo, Wilson Artisan Wineries Sales Director,
adding that the 2012 and 2013 vintages, the latter of which will be released in August,
produced stellar wines.
Mazzocco crafts 25 different Zinfandels, sourced from various vineyards around
Sonoma County and each with its own distinct character.
We are unique with single vineyard designation, and people can taste the differences
and find their favorites in the bunch, said Roseann Worley, tasting room manager.
Mazzoccos winemaker Antoine Favero doesnt stop at Zin. He also creates Sauvignon
Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah to round out the portfolio
but you might want to stock up on that wine because Mazzocco only produces 20,000
to 25,000 cases a year. It is hard to get these wines outside of the winery, especially the
very popular Zinfandels.

WINESONG 2015 Mendocinos Premier Wine and Food Event Keeps It Local
For the last 31 years, the weekend after Labor Day, wine and food
aficionados from all over the country (and even the world!) have
gathered along the stunning coast of Mendocino Country to join
together for WineSong. These welcomed visitors have participated in
overwhelmingly generous ways to support the local, Mendocino
commitment to maintain its rural hospital.
In 2015, the Mendocino Coast Hospital Foundation Board, in
tandem with local business people and long-time residents,
established an informal group to go local by taking on the work of
the auction chairs. Under the theme of My Mendo, My Hospital,
this dedicated group worked tirelessly to draw on their local, national
and worldwide resources to assemble an array of auction lots that
represent the best of Mendocino and the world beyond all for one
purpose: to create a show-stopping weekend on behalf of the
Mendocino Coast Hospital.
The fruits of their efforts this year brought to guests in part by
Celebrity Cruises will include travel packages to the French Alps,
Barbados, Italy and more. Local getaways hosted by such wineries as
Golden Eye and Handley. Among the wine packages will be a
collection of 52 Anderson Valley Sparkling Wines (one for every
week of the year!), verticals of Bordeaux, Dalle Valle Cabernet,
Chateauneuf du Pape (20 bottles), as well as an abundance of the
areas best Pinot Noir.
Beginning Friday, September 11, Winesong Weekend will kick off
with A Pinot Noir Celebration at Little River Inn produced in
partnership with Anderson Valley Winegrowers Association. On
Saturday, September 12, guests can stroll through the enchanting
Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens while enjoying a spectacular
assortment of wine and food from 100 highly acclaimed wineries and
50 top-notch Northern California restaurants. The glorious wine
celebration continues on into the auction tents for the main
attraction: the live and silent auctions, which is the where much
needed funds are raised for the Mendocino Coast District Hospital.
A Pinot Noir Celebration: Meet the Winemakers Friday, September 11 , 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
This illustrious event features Pinot Noir from Anderson Valley
and tastes of Little River Inns finest culinary offerings. The focus of
this celebration is to provide an opportunity to talk wine with the
winemakers themselves in an intimate setting. Evaluate new wines
and learn how classic Pinot Noir improves with age. Savor these lush
and elegant wines while you meet and mingle with the winemakers at
a seaside setting overlooking the spectacular Pacific Coast.
Wine & Food Tasting in the Gardens Saturday, September 12, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Each year, in order to offer a wide array of wines, Winesong
invites 100 highly acclaimed world-class wineries to preview their
new vintages. With producers coming from such diverse regions as
Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma, the Central Coast, Sierra Foothills,
Oregon, Washington State, Italy, Chile and South Africa, the tasting is
truly world-class and unprecedented in its sheer diversity. A

Auctions: Saturday, September 12 Silent, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Live, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
The centerpiece of Winesong Weekend is the Charity Auction,
featuring both a silent and live auction. VIP guests come from all over
the country and parts of the world, year after year to participate with
a chance to win some highly coveted auction lots while enjoying a
full-service, catered lunch. Excitement builds in the auction tents
with lively bidding for over 200 lots, featuring spectacular wines from
the worlds most prestigious wine producers, rare vintages, largeformat bottles plus special vertical and horizontal collections. Other
auction highlights in the past have include original art from
acclaimed California artists, vacations packages and highly coveted
international wine getaway packages to Tuscany, South Africa, France,
Spain, South America, the Caribbean and other enchanting parts of
the world. Rounding off the travel offerings have been one and two
night getaway trips to the Wests most romantic inns, resorts and
spas.

Winegrowing Decisions
BY JOSH STEIN
headspace created by the angels share, and the best way to address
this is to conslidate into fewer barrels. This causes a gradual
reduction of the overall wine in the cellar as barreled wines are
racked out of their homes and then into either a new barrel or a
tank, some folks deciding to maintain the integrity of each wine lot
while others allowing for a general mixing in a larger tank before
going back to individual barrels again.
Any given red spends 18 to 24 months in this cyclethough
some idiosyncratic producers may keep wine in barrel up to four
yearsand along the way, each racking creates a natural fining effect
as particles fall out of solution and end up in the belly of each barrel.
These lees provide for complexity but also possible microbial
contamination, which is why the monitoring of each wine in barrel
and as it is racked is most important of allwe can taste and smell
problems far quicker through sensory monitoring.
Regardless of which decisions are made, or not, each time the
winegrower chooses to tweak or not, to rack or not, how often, the
logistics of the racking, etc., all leave an impact on the final wine.
While the processes are scientific, measurable, and generally
predictable, the application is where experience and creativity come
to the fore. There is no one right answer, which is what makes
winegrowing so much fun. If we knew all the answers ahead of
time, thered be no point in doing it since wines tend to have minds
of their own. Consider that when you pop the next bottle and
enjoy!
Josh Stein has been in the Napa wine business for more than a dozen years, and, in addition
to being owner/winemaker of the Stein Family Wine Group, which produces a nationally and
internationally distributed portfolio of wine brands and donates a percentage of its sales, he
regularly consults for wineries and organizations throughout the North Bay and Coast via
their subsidiaries, Discrete Wine Support Services and Napa Valley Writing Services.
