Synchronous Ratcheting SIKUMATs of the series ST are safety units. They are used whenever
machines or installations are to be protected against destruction caused by overload.

'HVLJQDQG)XQFWLRQ
During normal operation the Synchronous ratcheting SIKUMAT transmits torque from the hub (1) to
the thrust collar (2) via balls. The balls (3) are pressed via the axial force of the plate springs (5) into
the angular face of the indexing ring (4) and the grooves of the thrust collar (2) and the grooves of
the hub (1). This design permits a backlash free torque transmission.
The thrust collar (2) is supported radially via a bearing (11). Axial forces (spring forces) are
transmitted via the bearing (11) onto the circlip (12) and there absorbed.
When an overload occurs, i.e. when the load torque exceeds a preset limit (limit torque), the balls (3)
are pressed axially out of the slots of the thrust collar (2) and the indexing ring (4) is moved axially
against the force of the plate springs. This causes an interruption of the flow of torque from the hub
(1) to the thrust collar (2). The Connected part with thrust collar (2) and the shaft with hub (1), or the
indexing ring (4), rotate at different speeds with audible ratcheting of the synchronous-ratcheting
SIKUMAT. It is possible that a small residual torque is transmitted at this time.
Synchronous re-engagement follows automatically as soon as the load torque drops below the preset
limit torque i.e. after 360. Connected part and shaft rotate again at the same speed.
The limit torque is set via the adjusting nut (7) and the preload of the plate springs (5). The safety
screw (10) secures the adjusting nut (7) against turning. See also chapter 7.
Torque transmission is effected between shaft and hub (1) either via a cone clamping connection or
via a keyway connection.

Non contact SIKUMAT limit sensors can monitor and signal excess limit torque, thus causing the
drive to be switched off immediately or triggering another control function.

The Synchronous- ratcheting SIKUMAT is delivered according to order.
With cone clamping element, finished bored and keywayes, or unbored.
With the relevant plate springs correctly arranged, in accordance with the torque range
requested.
Without torque setting or with torque setting at the specified limit torque (only finished bored and
with keyway).

Warning!

limiter are to be tightened before start-up in according to table 1!

Boring the hub is only necessary when the hub is unbored.
Boring the hub requires the synchronous ratcheting SIKUMAT to be completely dismantled.
Care must be taken during boring that the maximum permissible bore diameter, the profile of the
keyway, and the permissible radial runout are observed.
The keyway slot must be arranged at 90 to the outer keyway of the hub.

Take out clamping screws (9) and remove cone clamping element (8).
Remove safety screw (10), unscrew adjusting nut (7) and take off cone ring (6).
Lift plate springs (5) out of the indexing ring (4). Note which way the plate springs are
arranged. This is important for the mounting process later on.
Take off the indexing ring (4) with the balls (3). ,PSRUWDQWthe balls are loose!
Take off the circlip (12) and bearing (11) with thrust collar (2).

Mounting is carried out in reverse order. Factory-greased parts may need some more grease (e.g.
with BP LTX3).

7RUTXH6HWWLQJ


The Tool needed for this task is an adjustable two-pin wrench or a spanner. The cone ring (6) has a
number of semicircular notches on the circumference. Embossed on the circumference and the face of
the adjusting nut (7) are marker lines. Also embossed on the face are direction arrows with + and -
Turning the adjusting nut (7) clockwise
(direction -) effects a reduction of the limit torque. Turning the adjusting nut (7) anticlockwise
(direction +) effects an increase of the limit torque.
1. Safety screw (10) completely unscrew.
2. Screw the adjusting nut (7) clockwise (direction -) as far as possible.
3. Turn back anticlockwise (direction +) by one marker line. This is the base position. This is
where the limit torque is lowest according to the table.
4. Look up the desired torque value in the column for the Type supplied, and note the number of
corresponding marker lines in the column on the far left.
5. Turn the adjusting nut (7) anticlockwise (direction +) by the number of marker lines thus
established.
6. Screw in the safety screw (10) taking care that the screw head comes to rest on the adjusting
nut (7). If the safety screw (10) cannot be screwed in deep enough, check whether the thread
bore for the safety screw (10) is in alignment with a bore in the cone ring (6). The adjusting
nut (7) may need to be given a slight turn.
Secure the safety screw (10) with loctite to prevent it turning loose.
Use only the safety screw (10) with the correct length, as supplied. Using longer
:DUQLQJ
screws could lead to a reduction in the correct function of the Synchronous ratcheting SIKUMAT.
1RWH Table values are standard values. Due to manufacturing tolerances on the plate springs
deviations of the limit torque from the rated value will occur. It is therefore recommended to carry out
a test run during which the ratcheting at the required limit torque can be checked. If necessary, the
limit torque has to be modified by turning the adjusting nut (7).

1. Mount and screw on the connecting part (i.e. chain wheel).
2. Lightly oil the cone surface of the cone clamping element with machine oil (e.g. Esso Nuto or
Mobil DTE). '2127 oil the shaft and the bore of the clamping element.
3. Slide the Synchronous -ratcheting SIKUMAT onto the shaft and align it axially.
4. Secure the synchronous -ratcheting SIKUMAT axially. If it was supplied bored, this is done via the
keyway, e.g. between two circlips (see also drawing in section 3 Parts List).
If mounting onto a plain shaft (d 40 mm: h6 / d > 40 mm: h7) with a cone clamping element (8),
begin with light crossways tightening of the clamping screws (9). Then continue by gradually
tightening the clamping screws (9) with a torque wrench, one after the other in rotation, up to the
maximum torque value. (See table).

Take care during mounting that:

The Synchronous -ratcheting SIKUMAT is not subjected to hammer blows


No axial pressure is exerted on the Synchronous -ratcheting SIKUMAT, for example by an offset
chainwheel, or axial loading during mounting of the connecting part.

The synchronous -ratcheting SIKUMAT may make a slight movement of ca. 0,2 to 0,4mm when the
screws of the cone clamping element are tightened.

The shaft couplings compensate up to a certain extent for axial -, radial -, and angular displacements
of both shafts. Having mounted the ratcheting SIKUMAT and the shaft coupling onto the respective
shaft, these need to be aligned towards each other.

After all the driving components have been aligned, the ratcheting SIKUMAT must not be subjected
to axial pressure (axial stress).



'LVPDQWOLQJIURPWKH6KDIW


1. Remove the axial fastening for the Synchronous -ratcheting SIKUMAT, e.g. circlips. If a cone
clamp was used, loosen all the clamping screws and take them out. Insert a corresponding
number of screws into the release threads. Tighten screws in turns to push out the cone clamping
element.
2. Completely unscrew the screw connection of the connecting part with the thrust collar (2).
3. 'UDZ the Synchronous -ratcheting SIKUMAT off the shaft. Use the thread holes in the adjusting
nut (7) as an aid.

:DUQLQJ Do not use a hammer to force the Synchronous -ratcheting SIKUMAT off the shaft.



0DLQWHQDQFH


Synchronous -ratcheting SIKUMATS are filled with grease and are therefore lubricated for life.
Normally they do not require any maintenance.
Special maintenance work may only become necessary in the case of excess dirt or dust or other
extreme ambient conditions (e.g. high temperature, moisture). The length of interval depends on the
prevailing ambient conditions and should be determined individually by the customer.
The axial play of the shaft onto which the Synchronous -ratcheting SIKUMAT has been fitted should
be checked during the normal maintenance intervals. Too great a play of the shaft bearing can cause
an axial shift of the Synchronous -ratcheting SIKUMAT. This could mean constant changing of the

switching distance where a SIKUMAT limit sensor is fitted resulting in possible false signals.
