Performing Arts

Performance art has been around since the mid 20 th century. To be compared with
the artists who use clay, paint, plaster or other materials to create physical art
objects, performing artists convey their artistic expression by giving performance on
stage. The artwork performing artists work out includes dance, opera, magic show,
music, etc.
4 elements of performance include performance, audience, space and time.
Performance: Peformance should be taken as the first element in making
performance art. As can be seen from the term, performance art relates to
performance closely. This fact was noticed by some of the artists who were
influenced by Bauhaus period. performance needs an audience to exist. The
audience becomes the essential element, without which the performance wouldnt
make any progress.
Audience: The main trend in contemporary performance art is to get audiences
involved in making artwork. Many performance artists try to turn their viewers into
active participants in their work. Loads of ways has been tested by artists to involve,
including offering interaction, conduct audience or even turn visitors into performers
without their notice.
Space and Time: In terms of space, contemporary performance art not only happens
on stages, in museums or galleries but it can be anywhere. Since the place artists
choose to give performance may attach extra meaning to a work, the importance of
space has been important. Various spaces are resorted by artist in divers aspects to
convey their art expression.
Types of Performing Arts
Music
There are 3 types such as music performance, music education, and musicology for
example history and theory of music. Students learn to play musical instrument but
also study music theory, musicology, history of music and musical composition. It is
used to broaden skills of non-musicians by teaching skills such as concentration and
listening.
Drama
it is the branch of the performing arts which is more about acting out stories in front
of an audience. Speech, gesture, music, dance, sound and spectacle are used. The
narrative dialogue style of plays, theatre takes such forms as musicals, opera, ballet,
illusion, mime, stand-up comedy, pantomime, and non-conventional or arthouse
theatre.
Dance
Refers to human movement used as a form of expression or in a social, spiritual or
performance setting. It is used to describe methods of non-verbal communication

between humans or animals. Choreography is the art of making dances, and the
person who does this is called a choreographer. Dance ranges from folk dance to
ballet. Rhythmic gymnastics, f igure skating, ice dancing and synchronized
swimming are dance disciplines are also other examples. Some martial arts have
dance-like moves.

The performing arts have been a part of human culture for thousands of years, with
ancient cultures such as the Romans refining many types of performance, such as
theater and dance.
Controversy
One of the controversial aspects of every type of performance art is what exactly
defines it, as aesthetic taste and perspective vary not only by culture but also by
individual preference.
Hybrid Types
In addition to the strictly outlined seven types of performance art, there are many
hybrid types that combine one or more aspects of the originals. For example,
Broadway musicals are a combination of theater, music and dance.
Religion
The root of many types of performance art, including dance, music and theater, can
be traced back to the religious ceremonies of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece.
