MOTIVATION
Good morning, class!

Good morning, sir!

I know that you all are excited to write your essays

but before that here Im going to give some tips that
might help you improve your essay.
How do you usually begin your essay?
And how do you end it?
With a quote.
With a question.
How do you support your thesis statement then?
PRESENTATION OF THE LESSON
Good. Now I know that you have your own
techniques to develop your essays but before that,
let me give some add-ons that might help when
youre writing.
Always remember that your essay has three major
parts which are the introduction, the body and the
conclusion.

With a quote.
With an answer to the question I asked on the
introduction.
Learners responses may vary.

Im going to need three volunteers to read what I will

flash. Others please listen to them or read silently.
Okay?
The teacher will flash the story A Lesson from Mad
Hatter which the class will read aloud or silently.
Okay, very well. Thank you.
Please remember the story as we will get back on
that later.
I need another volunteer to read what I will flash.
The teacher will flash a line from Jane Austens novel
Pride and Prejudice.

Okay.
Three volunteers will read what will be flashed on
the screen.

That was one line from a classic novel. Do you agree

with the statement the author has proclaimed?
Whether you agree or not, you can actually reserve
your thoughts and write an essay that will either
counter or support that sentiment of her.
Another line will be flashed and another volunteer
will be asked to read.

One student will volunteer to read.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single
man in possession of a good fortune must be in
want of a wife.

LESSON PROPER/DISCUSSION
If you have noticed, the lines and statements I have
presented are actually some the many ways on how
to begin an essay.

Learners responses may vary.

The story, A Lesson from Mad Hatter is actually an

anecdote. Do you know what an anecdote is?
An anecdote is a brief interesting story that leads to
the development of the essay. So, whether its
original or not, a personal experience or not, using
an anecdote could be very effective for some writers.
The next line that your classmate has read is actually
a striking statement and that is one way to entice
your readers to read what youve written.

For to be idle is to become a stranger unto seasons

and to step out of lifes procession that marches in
majesty and proud submission toward the infinite.

The author claimed that what she believed in is a

truth universally acknowledged, although it is not.
The line sparks up an argument that will actually
make you read the whole thing she has written.
Learners responses may vary.
And the third line is an analogy. What is an analogy
for anyway?
Correct. Actually there are more ways to introduce an
essay. Here they are:

A
A
A
A
A
A

startling fact or bit of information

meaningful quotation
universal idea related to your thesis
rich, vivid description or image
fresh analogy or metaphor
thought-provoking question

Also, please do take note of the openings to avoid

which are as follows:
Dictionary definitions of words your reader
should know.
Did you know? or Have you ever
wondered? rhetorical questions
This paper will be about In this paper I
will prove
Beginning too far away from your actual topic
A book report list of irrelevant facts
Also, please do take note that your introduction
must contain:
Essential background about your topic and
preparation for your major thesis.
Road maps for the rest of the essay,
previewing major ideas and posing important
questions that you will consider in your paper.
End with your major thesis.
Make special attempts to link the TS to the
sentence that precedes it by building on a key
word or idea.
Please do take note of them as they are very
essential tips when writing an essay. Understood?

An analogy shows the similarities between two

unlike things or objects.

Also, when writing the body of your essay there are

thing you ought to remember. Depending on the type
of your essay, you can try any of these. But dont put
them all in one essay as you would only be hurting
your reader.
Now, we proceed on how to write an effective
conclusion.
Why do you think that a conclusion is important in
ones essay?

Correct. Now, how should a conclusion be?

Perfect. Effective conclusions therefore often refer
back to ideas presented in a papers introduction.
Yes, sir.
Also, these are some of the very many major
functions of the conclusion, your conclusion should:
Should echo the major
repeating words verbatim.

thesis

without

Why should you not echo the major thesis in

verbatim?
Should move beyond TS to reflect
significance of ideas just presented.

on

Should indicate why these ideas are

important.
Now, how important is indicating that your ideas are
important? And why?

Your conclusion wraps up your argument and

leaves the reader with some final things to think
about.
Your conclusion should stem from what you have
already written.

Now, here are some effective ways on how you could

conclude your essays. Please do provide responses
on why do you think you should end your essays that
way. Okay?
The students will be asked by the teacher on why is
the method of conclusion effective.
Reflect on how topic relates to larger issues

As it would make the words redundant. And what

(in the novel, in society, in history)

good is writing the words verbatim? Your

conclusion would be similar to your introduction
then.

Show how topic affects the readers life

Evaluate the concepts presented

Issue a call for action on the part of the
audience

Very important. To make the reader feel that

he/she did not waste time reading your essay and
to make your reader understand that the essay
youve written is relevant and significant to his or
her life.

Very good. Such wonderful answers. Now here is

another wave of effective conclusions.
Ask questions generated by essays findings
Make predictions

Recommend a solution

Connect back to introduction, esp. if writer

used a metaphor, anecdote, or etc.

To make your reader feel that what you have

actually discussed in your essay is relevant to
ones life.
To make her realize that what he/she actually read
is significant to her life in a way or another.

This more in the persuasive side. To accentuate the

sentiments you shared with the reader. Call for an
action to make the readers feel that they actually
are as powerful as you are in the subject you are
discussing.

Give a personal statement about the topic

Conclusions to avoid:
The teacher will ask the students on why the
following should be avoided.
Beginning with In conclusion
Restating thesis and main points without
adding anything new
Bringing up a new topic

To make your audience feel involved.

This will make your readers anticipate whether or

not your predictions will come true or not.
If you have introduced a problem in your
introduction, then you must provide a solution.
If you used an anecdote then you can put the
ending of the anecdote at the conclusion. If you
have used a metaphor, support that metaphor.

Adding irrelevant details

The writer has to have his/her own stand regarding

the issues he/she has presented.

Very good. It seems that everybody is more than

ready to write their essays. But to recap things.
GENERALIZATION
Today, I have introduced to you ways on how to
effectively begin and essay. Also, I have presented
the things you must avoid. Again, I will stress the fact
that each writer has a way of developing his/ her
essay. If you havent found your way yet, the things
that we have discussed a while could be of great help
as they were proven and tested and are suggested
by writers as well. As you search for your own style,
do not be hesitant to copy that of others. After all,
what are we but a patchwork of things that inspired
us? But in the end, just make sure that you have to
find your own voice in the world that we writers are
in.
EVALUATION
Class participation of the students will serve as the
evaluation tool.
AGREEMENT
Choose a topic, read and research about it.
Tomorrow, after we have discussed the body of the
essay, you will begin writing your first draft.

The writer must show, not tell.

Restate your thesis and main points and supply
with a short support.

Its hard enough to write an essay with one topic.

You should not bring up another new.
If you must introduce another topic, write another
essay.
Adding irrelevant details will only make your reader
confused.
