Joyce Travelbee
Human-To-Human Relationship Model
Joyce Travel bee is a psychiatric nurse, educator and writer born in 1926. She
defined the following terms:

Nursing as:

"An interpersonal process whereby the professional nurse practitioner assists an

individual, family or community to prevent or cope with experience or illness and
suffering, and if necessary to find meaning in these experiences.
Analysis: Nursing, has been a very significant factor when it comes to the delivery of
healthcare Based on Travelbees definition, it is a profession focused on the care of not
only of individuals but as well as the families, and communities. With this, they will have
the chance to achieve and preserve utmost health and quality of life from conception to
death. She considers patient as a whole which is a great way to handle patients in order
to establish better provision of care. Travelbee states that nurses role is to be able to
assist patients towards wellness and to be able help them find meaning or sense in the
experiences they had been through whether it may be good or bad.

Person as:

A human being.
Analysis: A human being is a unique, irreplaceable individual who is in continuous
process of becoming, evolving and changing. I certainly agree with Travelbees point of
view which states that patients must be considered as unified whole having its own
unique characteristics which cannot be just by merely considering the parts. Through
this, nurses will be able to provide a holistic, individualized and effective nursing care to
every individual. Nurses are considered as a human being so it is definitely right to treat
other people as a human being as well. Travelbee believes the nursing goals require the
foundation of a genuine human-to-human relationship between the patient and the
nurse, which can only be established by a healthy and consistent interaction process.
This process has five phases: the initial meeting or original encounter, the visibility of
personal and emerging identities, empathy, sympathy, and establishing mutual
understanding and rapport. This five phases are essential to the establishment of a
good nurse-patient relationship which aims to provide better care/interventions.

Role of Nurses

Is to help man to find meaning in the experience of illness and suffering.

Has a responsibility to help individuals and their families to find meaning.
The nurses' spiritual and ethical choices, and perceptions of illness and suffering, are
crucial to helping to find meaning.
Nurse does not only seek to alleviate physical pain or render physical care she
ministers to the whole person. The existence of the suffering whether physical, mental
or spiritual is the proper concern of the nurse.
Analysis: It focuses on compassion and building trust with the patient that I believe is
extremely essential in the nursing profession. Travelbee considers the roles of nurses
as a promise or a commitment in providing improved patient care. It exceeds the idea of
the physical and helps focus also on the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the
patient. This kind of nursing care allows a holistic approach with genuine interest. When
other methods fail, alternatives are considered in hopes to give a patient the best
possible care. Travelbee believes that the role of nurses will be best accomplished
through creating a vigorous relationship between patients, beginning with an original
encounter and then progressing through stages of emerging identities, developing
feelings of empathy and sympathy.
