Introduction
There are a number of ways and causes of pain being inflicted on individuals varying by nation.
In the United States thousands of cases go before courts dealing with the mistreatment of
childeren. Children are victims of abuse, both verbal and physical. It can be argued that though
there are a number of different ways that families can discipline their children, spanking
becomes the easiest form of punishment. Cases are reviewed by judges social workers and the
latter, but the result usually turns out the same. Is spanking and or corporal punishment a good
way to discipline your children? Though many agree and disagree with a strategic mindset, we
have taken a closer look at certain variables that may affect certain attitudes about spanking.
Attributes to be Measured
The attributes to be measured include age, gender, and classification. These variables will be
acknowledged as independent variables and will lead the research and the survey itself. The
dependent variables will be a series of questions that can predict attitudes about spanking and
assess knowledge of the individual. The questions will look at information that may be personal
to the respondent, for example; were you spanked as a child? The respondents will be randomly
selected individuals and will be members of the student body at Tuskegee University. Tuskegee
University homes a body of students of majority Black students and the leading classification on
campus ends up being freshmen. The surveys will target a diverse population of students
withing the campus community, ranging from freshmen students to higher level Vet School
students.
Project #1 3
Univariate Hypotheses
The data is expected to show that students on campus feel that spanking is a means of discipline
that is ok and acceptable for future generations. The students in the survey will vary by
classification but the most surveyed will be freshmen females, because they dominate the
campus. The informtion in the results will not show any biases because of the population that is
being surveyed. Outcomes dealing with the set of questions will show that spanking is well
accepted in the Black community and should not be thought of as harsh behavior. The students
will speak from experience and will more than likely be truthful with the dependent variable
Bivariate Hypotheses
When comparing the questions to the independent variables, there may be a depiction of priority
that is shown through in age and gender. More males may be able to relate to questions dealing
with the future of spanking children and how they were affected by it. Classification may cause
a different level of interest in the topic of the future of spanking children. Students may not be
thinking of the future and may be bored by the survey all together. Students may not be as
truthful as other populations when dealing with the independent variables. Students may not
want any connection to the data and may be forced to choose something by their own force of
habit. The information contained in the survey may all be answered by the students unless there
is a brief moment of inquiry for any of the questions. Overall the identity of the students may be
Multivariate Hypotheses
In order to understand the results of the multivariate section of analysis, one must understand
exactly what the independent variable mean to the survey in order to choose points of
observation. Students information will definetly show through multivariate analysis. The
students who were not as truthful will be forgotten because the results will be compiled into
more than one series. The amount of students that believe in spanking will be high and the
amount of males surveyed may be low but their ideas will be concrete on all ends. The students
may not show much interest in question 4 which will show some type of error because of their
Rationale
When including this question in the survey, I understood that there might be some type of
correlation on the subject. The reality is that this question could be a question that requires
closer observation under a different study. This question show that it is a branch question that
takes you to a different realm of the subject at hand. The way in which the information is
tabulated shows that most respondents were truthful and serious about the answer in which they
received. The students who were involved in the survey were able to use items like these items
to guide them through the survey. This item was not tricka nd had a good number of respondents
on it.

that required much stress. Knowing the demographics of the area in which one is surveying
can help make predictions. In the hypotheses I predicted that there would be more females
than male and that the rates of freshmen participating would be in high levels. Those
predictions that I made were true in the graphs above. My predictions on age were not
clearly placed in the hypotheses but it links directly with the age group or freshmen and
sophmore. The discrepancy then becomes how are people classifying themselves and if the
information is completely true when dealing with the independent variables and their values.
The data contained in these graphs seem to be porportional and accurate to the extent of age.

Discussion: The findings dealing with this variable not as predicted. While I thought more
students would think it was okay to spank children because of their age and status in life, I
was proved completely wrong. Students were not willing to say that they believed that
spanking was okay. The question now can be what made students uncomfortable with
sharing their feelings or are these there true feelings. The fact that there are 80 percent of
individuals who did said that no was the answer shows me that there may be a control
variable that best suits this case and what happened with the data.

Discussion: The information contained in the graph showe that a large number of
respondents were spanked during their childhood. Students at Tuskegee University are

that influences African American’s decision to spank their children and why? 81percent of
the respondents show that there was some type of trial or need for disciplining that. There
were some though, that were not spanked. In order to evaluate the information contained in

great support. 78percent of the repondents felt strongly about the issue. There was more

The more formal question is, which gender are the respondents from. The information
contained int the graph shows that there are a great deal of individuals who would have
needed corporal punishment on several different occasions. This data is not telling us that
they want to spank their children or even if the pain inflicted on them had something to do
with the way in which our standing as adults and there beyond. The variable takes a good
look into the question. Question for the survey are all connected and later there will be an

the questions are asked this way. Some people may have been confused and lead astray. The
individuals who were were likely to spank their childern were not interested in re evaluating
what their survey proved to them at the end. The students could have been selected at bad
times or used a bad choice of words for the future surveys. The people who were under the
35 percent that were very likely to spank their children. As far as my hypotheses, My
independent variables are the variable that are showing true. The group were in the likely
section of the answere. The survey downplayed this item and a few others may have been

Age of Respondent
Discussion: When dealing with question 4 I thought that the relative atttitudes about the
spanking would vary by age. I predicted that the respondents that were older would favor
spanking children more than freshmen in college. The information provided would most
definetly be a a great place to start with more research. The outcome was the exact opposite
of what I predicted and could have been based on those who I surveyed. The respondents
were not around the most diverst group and might have changed the data dramatically had
they not been at the front gates. Though the information included in this section was easy to
read and grow then why not pair with other control variables in a multivariate table.

Discussion: When identifying and control variables to use for this graph I had a great idea
That students would have loved that the surveys were given at a good and unrushed process.
I also found that men are not as active on campus, the males may have been more receptive.
The information was found very helpful to the previous bivariate graph, because now we can
share and compare the data bases on the gender scale. Though the gender does have a large
impact on the data collected, I tried hard to make sure that there is no large discrepancy

Age of Respondent
Discussion: The age of the respondent is showing a trend against more than one variable.
This is the reason that I chose it for my bivariate and multivariate crosstabs. When age is
looked at it makes a difference in the attitudes as well as the eagerness to participate in such
as surveys. The age group under 21 came in the lead with this comparison because they may
not be use to having freedom. In reality they may have just come out of situations at home
that where corpal punishment was threatened and in some cases used. I have also found that
when the age is a factor like in this case there are difinetly other variables that may be able to
connect and compare differences between them. Though there is much work to be done in
association with age this graph is just a small percentage of the data that can be retrieved on
the subject.

Discussion: Contained in this graph are yes and no answers of male respondents only. From
This graph you can see that no one male was surveyed for the higher ages. The data shows
that the category of age under 21 in the most popular amongst others that were surveyed.
The age of respondent has a lot to do with outcomes. In the case of this graph the
respondents answereed yes in all of the age groups. There is no correlation between the ages
41 and older. The ages that surveyed the most mean the most to the study and are very
important to the outcomes of the study. When looking at the data most respondents that were
males were either in low numbers or failed to answer the question honestly to be tallied
correctly. The data contained will only hinder the outcome of the study if there are no
comparisons made.

Discussion: As before stated the most popular age group is the under 21 category. Though
there are other responses there is no correlation between any of the other categories that can
be identified by looking at this graph. Now that there are a number of questions that show
that there is a trend on can be able to make direct observations and back them with truthful
statements. The campus community as I mentioned are freshmen and sophmore age. The
fact that these students agree that they should have received corporal punishment shows that
the population may not be as open to certain thoughts and patterns that can be developed and
tested. The factors and variables of this chart do show that there are in fact a number of

Discussion: Yes, this graph compiles the data in which we settled in previous graphs, but the
informations shows true across the board for the mail population. With responses being
ahead of other age groups there may be a need for an additional study to go along with this
data. The 21-24 age group shows that there is a small amount of respondents and from there
on, the information show true throughout the graph. The graph shows that attitudes about
question 10 are important but important to a group, and that the group is the majority. When
there is a majority there there is always some type of problem. The problem becomes how
can I compile this data so that it is not biased? The informationn seems to biased across the
board but for research and other small large projects it may just do the job.
Project #1 28
Additional Analysis
When studying the multivariate information I found that there were a numder of males who
feel just as passionate about spanking children . Men were not sampled in large numbers
which leads me to believed that ther is more that can be looked into when comparing genders
and their opinions on highly debated subjects such as spanking children. Women felt really
strong about the issue and yet there was no correlation between the question that asked about
parents using methods of corporal punishment. I would like to know why is it that younger
respondents want to use corpral punishment. The identity of certain individuals should also
be required to be truthful using the button that lets students mark questions must answere so
Conclusion
After completing Project #1 there are a series of conversations that I can have when dealing
with the student body here at Tuskegee University. The University homes students of all
ages. The campus has a majority of students that are under 21. The survey that was
conducted showed that outcomes are not always what you think. When looking at my
bivariate hypotheses and multivariate hypotheses you have to almost think outside of the box
of predictability. When you are able to work your way through research to find out your
information was simply guesses that may have totally different turn outs.
When looking back at the data for the assignment the large differences were mostly dealing
with Age, Gender, and Classification. Most of the infomration was one sided and a bit
biased because of the demographics of this location. The bivariat comparisons showed be

that there was not much of a correlation between variables that could be used for a unique
comparisons given all the work that goes into such a project.
Overall the multivariate information really helped me to see that there was absolutely great
comparisons to be made when you look at more than on variable at a time. The information
that was developed in bivariate charts and was helpful in making pie charts and presenting
Spanking children still seems to be up in the air. From my personal observation there was a
large number of people that agree with the tactic and some people. The fact that the
questionnaire questions were wonderful questions to ask. But the questions should have been
