THEORY
Multiplexers, often abbreviated as MUX, are also called as data selectors.
Multiplexing means transmitting a large number of information units over a smalls number of
channels or lines. A digital MUX is a combinational circuit that selects information from one
of many input lines and dissects it to a single output line. The selection of a particular input
line is controlled by a set of selection lines.
A demultiplexer, often abbreviated as demux, is also called as data distributors. A
demultiplexer is a combinational circuit that receives information on a single line and
transmits that information on one of 2n possible output lines. The selection of a specific
output line is controlled by the values of n selection lines. The single input variable Din has a
path to all of the outputs, but the input information is dissected to only one of the output lines.
PROCEDURE
1. Connect the circuit as shown in figure. Remember to connect pin 14 of each IC + 5V
and Pin 7 to ground.
2. Construct the truth table for the circuit
3. The level of each of the input line is controlled by respective SPDT switches. Set the
input switches for combinations shown in truth table. Observe the output in LEDs.
4. Compare the results with truth table.

PRE-LAB QUESTIONS
1. The timing diagram shown below is applied to a 2:1 MUX. Draw the output
waveform Z.

2. What is the function of the multiplexers select input?

3. A certain MUX can switch one of 32 data inputs to its output. How many different
inputs does this MUX have?
4. Write some major applications of MUX.
5. True or False: When a MUX is used to implement a logic function, the logic variables
are applied to the multiplexers data inputs.
6. True or False: The circuit for a DeMUX is basically the same as for a decoder.
POST-LAB QUESTIONS
1. Modify the basic 4:1 MUX to obtain a MUX with
a. active-HIGH enable and active-HIGH output
b. active-HIGH enable and active-LOW output
c. active-LOW enable and active-HIGH output
d. active-LOW enable and active-LOW output
2. Obtain 8:1 MUX using 4:1 MUXes.
3. Using 4:1 MUX, obtain (a) HA, and (b) FA
4. For each item, indicate whether it is referring a MUX, a DeMUX, a decoder, or an
encoder.
a. Has more inputs than outputs.
b. Use SELECT inputs.
c. Can be used in parallel-to-serial converter.
d. Produces a binary code at its output.
e. Only one of its outputs can be active at one time.
f. Can be used to route an input signal to one of several possible outputs.
g. Can be used to generate arbitrary logic functions.
