Ohana Youth Week Aug. 4-11

character, Lilo, is reciting the
definition of the Hawaiian word
Ohana to her older sister and
care-taker. In her definition she
says, Ohana means family. Family
means nobody gets left behind or
forgotten. This understanding of
family is one that the youth group
here at Missouri United Methodist
has decided to embrace as the
theme for Youth Week 2015, which
will take place August 4-11.
Youth Week is an annual youth
event at Missouri United Methodist
Church that marks the ending of
the summer break from school and
allows one more chance at fun and
freedom before the start of classes
in the fall. This event has typically taken place the
week before classes start in the Columbia Public School
district. We are actually moving the date up a week this
year in order to accommodate our students who attend
the Southern Boone County School District and start a
week earlier. As always, youth week is a time for our
youth to gather in fun and fellowship and increase the
bonds we all share in our love for one another and Jesus
Christ.
We will kick off youth week by joining the rest of the
church at an All-Church/Community BBQ and Movie
Night on Tuesday, August 4. THE WHOLE CHURCH is
invited to join together as a family at 4 p.m. for a
time of food, fun and games, as we cook hot dogs and
hamburgers, have bounce houses and other games, as
well as a dunk tank. More importantly this will be a
time to come together and share in laughter with our
whole church family. After the outdoor festivities, we
will go upstairs to the MPR to watch a movie together.
Because we acknowledge that we are a part of a larger
Christian and denominational family, on Thursday,
Aug. 6, the youth will begin two days of mission work
at Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church here in
Columbia. From 9-11 a.m. on that Thursday, we will
be working with Wilkes to clean up and do yard work
around the outside of their church building and on
Sunday, Aug 9, we will work inside their sanctuary from
1-3 p.m. to polish and clean pews, as well as other
parts of their facility.

On Friday, Aug. 7, we will travel together as a youth


family to Big Surf Water Park in the Lake of the Ozarks
region for a day of water fun. We will meet at the
church at 8 a.m. that day and travel together and
return about 6 p.m. that evening. The cost of this event
is $20 per person and as always, please bring a friend
with you.

person. Once again, friends are invited to come. We will


be leaving the church around 3 p.m. and will be home
around midnight.

Youth Week 2015 will come to a wrap on Tuesday, August


11, with a backyard party at the home of Corey and
Anna Zacherl. Once again we will have food, games and
worship for the youth as we come together for a final
day of fun as a family before we begin our school years.

up for all events you would like to attend and if you are
an adult who would like to help out in these activities,

This is a time of wonderful fun, mission and worship and
we look forward to drawing together as a family and
showing our Ohana to each other.

REFLECTION: Not until he was deep down in an emotional hole did Elijah hear
the small voice of God. What does it take for you? Can we hear and experience
God in joy? What would that look like for you?
PRAYER: Amazing Love, thank you for quieting my surroundings so that I might
hear you and only you.

FRIDAY: 1 KINGS 19:1-18 Comfort food


REFLECTION: What spiritual disciplines and routines comfort you? Prayer,
fasting, reading the Bible.
PRAYER: Nourish me Jesus with your presence, Word and people.

THURSDAY: 1 KINGS 19:1-18 Running and weary


REFLECTION: There is a point when we hit a wall, burn out. How do you care
for yourself before you get to those times?
ACTION: Take 3 deep breaths. Imagine the Holy Spirit filling you up each
time you inhale. If we are not careful we go through our day and dont even
remember it. When you get in the car, change from one task to the next, stop
and take 3 deep breaths, then proceed. What impact did this have on your day?
Share with a friend.

WEDNESDAY: MATTHEW 6:25-33 Seek first


REFLECTION: Worrying chafes our spirit. Trust, however, liberates us like birds
of the air.
PRAYER: Lord, tend to the worry warts on my spirit. Restore me to confidence in you.

TUESDAY: PSALM 37:1-8 The fretting life


REFLECTION: Wringing your hands, sweaty palmswhat happens when you become
anxious and fretful? Fret not! In our fretting we are susceptible to wrongdoing.
ACTION: Write a list of your worries or frets and place it on your personal altar.
Visit once a week. Watch the list shorten.

MONDAY: PHILIPPIANS 4:1-9 Practice whatever is


REFLECTION: Ever read something and think, someone should do that? This
scripture calls us to practice truth, nobility, purity, love, etc
PRAYER: Forgive me for reading the Bible as something that sounds good rather
than a way to live.

future. William K. McElvaney (1928-2014), UMC Social Justice
Advocate, Minister, Seminary President and Professor
In his book, McElvaney addresses the what, why, where, and how
questions related to social justice. It is written for everyone
interested in biblical, theological, and sociological issues concerning
peace and justice in todays society. The book blends the basics of
social justice and practical knowledge with an enlightening view as
a challenge for the church and man to make an impact in the world.

July 25: Puppy Wash

Turning Point Ministries, in conjunction with Wilkes Blvd. United


Methodist Church, will be holding its first annual Puppy Wash on
Saturday, July 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the church parking lot at
702 Wilkes Blvd. Proceeds will benefit Turning Point Ministries. The
cost will be $5 for small breed dogs and $10 for large breed dogs.
There will also be food, drinks and games for the kids. Contact
Terisa Sleet or Dinesa Morris of Turning Point Ministries on
Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon at 573-214-4077.
