Becoming a Justice Seeking
Congregation by William McElvaney
Next meeting: Tuesday, Sept 8, 2015
Justice is absolutely necessary for
the world to have a viable future.
William K. McElvaney (1928-2014),
UMC Social Justice Advocate,
Minister, Seminary President and
Professor
In his book, McElvaney addresses the
what, why, where, and how questions
related to social justice. It is written
for everyone interested in biblical,
theological, and sociological issues concerning peace and justice
in todays society. The book blends the basics of social justice and
practical knowledge with an enlightening view as a challenge for
the church and man to make an impact in the world. For more
info, contact Anne Gifford, RN DEdMin at gifford1@mindspring.

Facilitator Training

Join us on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 6-7pm for Growth Group

Facilitator Training! A facilitator:
Guides a discussion, but does NOT have all of the answers;
Is a learner, but is NOT an expert on all things Biblical;
Loves listening to peoples thoughts, but does NOT insist on
hearing themselves speak.
A facilitator is ready to go deeper, grow personally, and value
being used to fulfill the churchs mission. Whos ready?! Typically, a facilitator is a team player and is committed to what God
is doing and will do at Missouri UMC. Facilitators can expect
training, support and encouragement.
Cant make it? Email Pastor Charity at charity@moumc.org to set up
a different time!
2 MISSOURI UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

As we move into a new season together, I invite you to

grow deeply as our worship series and Growth Groups
(small groups) complement each other in theme and
practice. We are offering Growth Groups because if
we are not growing, we are, at worst, dying, or at best,
stagnating.
Growth Groups connect people, grow them
spiritually, and are fun. I believe groups are one way to
propel us into our future by growing us deeply and widely
(that is, spiritual depth and increased numbers). A Growth
Group is a sacred, welcoming space where individuals
have the opportunity to meet new people, make new
friends, learn something new and grow spiritually.
As we build on the existing small group ministry, we will
continue to have Wednesday Night Live starting September
9. In both worship, and on Wednesdays, we will be
following themes from the book, Real Followers: A Radical
Quest to Expose the Pretender in Each of Us by Michael
Slaughter, Pastor of Ginghamsburg UMC in Ohio.
-Charity Goodwin-Rosario, Pastor of Discipleship

Printed copies are available at the Connector Desk.

SATURDAY: Acts 2:14-40 Preach, Peter!

REFLECTION: Calling on the Prophet Joel, Peter explains that the rush of the spirit
was foretold. He preached about Jesus, crucified and resurrected, and to the people
gathered to give themselves to the Way of Living, not the way of their pseudosacred culture.
PRAYER: Ready me to hear tomorrows sermon. Make me open. Be with the preacher,
and may the words spoken reach, teach and transform us like Peters sermon did so
long ago.

FRIDAY: Acts 2:1-13 [Title]

REFLECTION: The first church, like now, was made up of diverse people, in thought
and tongue, an imperfect people, brought together by the power of the spirit, to
speak and live as Christ followers.
PRAYER: Bless this, your church, Missouri UMC. May we, as a diverse and imperfect
people, be brought together by the power of your spirit.

THURSDAY: Acts 2:1-4 The spirited church

REFLECTION: Too often, the Holy Spirit is mentioned but not encountered by the
church. How can this be, when the churchs very creation is made possible by the
Spirit?
ACTION: Describe a time when you knew (not felt) and were assured of Gods
presence in the Spirit. Journal, think and/or share with someone.

WEDNESDAY: Luke 10:27 What the World Needs Now is Love (Dionne Warwick)
REFLECTION: Love is power. Power to transform, heal and bring joy. Be a vessel of
Gods love and share with the world.
ACTION: As children, perhaps we believed in the power of love more fully. Connect
with your childlike self by coloring a picture depicting love.
PRAYER: Increase my faith in you, Lovely God.

TUESDAY: I John 4 Love the One who is love

REFLECTION: We throw this word around saying, I love chocolate, or, I love this
song; its my jam. God is love. Lets save our I love statements for meaningful
expressions.
PRAYER: God, I love you because______________.

MONDAY: John 3:16 Scripture show painted on chests

REFLECTION: Why do people use this verse at sporting events? It started as a
gimmick to get attention, according to a CNN article. The most renowned Christian
verse, perhaps it is one many commit to memory.
ACTION: Commit John 3:16 to memory if you dont already know it. If you do, say it
as a grace over your meal today.
