Creating the Future We Want

&

Dr. Ida Kubiszewski

Senior Lecturer

Crawford School of Public Policy

Australian National University, Canberra
Editors in Chief, Solutions (www.thesolutionsjournal.org)

A high and sustainable quality of life is a central goal for humanity. The UN Sustainable Development Goals
process is building international consensus on a set of 17 goals and supporting targets and indicators. Meeting
these goals and achieving the future we want the theme of the UN Rio+20 conference is a significant local
and global research challenge that will require a substantially different approach to science and policy.
Creating a sustainable and desirable future will require redesign of our socio-ecological regime and economic
paradigm to recognise the substantial contributions of natural and social capital and focus explicitly on
sustainable quality of life and well-being rather than on unlimited material growth.

The talk will discuss:

scenario planning (including pubic opinion surveys) to build consensus
new indicators of progress toward these shared goals
new institutions, policies, and civil society movements needed to achieve the future we
want

The best way to predict the future is to create it.

Lets create the future we want!
