ABSTRACT

This is an action research using the WH-Question method through the Sentence Master Game
to improve pupils descriptive writing in S.K. Triang Jaya. The research aimed to identify the
pupils problem in descriptive writing and to identify use the Sentence Master Game to elicit
descriptive details in constructing sentences with more description. The participants consisted
of four pupils from Year 4 Muazzim. They were chosen because they were only capable of
constructing simple sentences. The data for this study was collected by using pupils work,
questionnaire and interview. There were five session all together. The Sentence Master Game
consisted of a pack 24 cards and was played in Session 3, Session 4 and Session 5 of the
intervention. The game has provided the participants with an opportunity to learn how to use
the WH-Questions to elicit descriptive details in constructing sentences with more
description. This also provided them with a fun learning context to practise their writing
skills. The participants felt that the WH-Question method has assisted them in their
descriptive writing through the Sentence Master Game. The researcher learnt that language
teaching should be delivered in a fun and unthreatening atmosphere in order to maximise
pupils learning. In future research, the researcher may examine the Sentence Master Game to
have an order of the WH-Questions in order to organise the descriptive details systematically
in sentences. Other forms of writing activities like clustering, brainstorming and rapid fire
writing may also be employed using the WH-Question method.

I am heartily thankful to my supervisor, Mr Hishamuddin Bin Hj. Abdul Rahman,


who had given encouragement, and support from the beginning until the final part of my
research. He had helped a lot in developing my understanding on this subject.
I also would like to thank the lecturers from the English Department, Institut
Pendidikan Guru Kampus Tengku Ampuan Afzan for their support and help. Next, I would
like to thank all my friends who had helped me in the research. They contributed many ideas
and shared information that were useful in producing this work.
Lastly, I offer my regards and gratitude to all of those who supported me in any
respect during the completion of the project.
