TOXICOLOGY
EFFECTS OF ACUTE EXPOSURE
Skin Contact
defatting, drying, may irritate
Skin Absorption
yes; toxic effects may occur by this route
Eye Contact
very irritating; redness & swelling of conjunctiva; effects persist; 300 ppm vapour irritating
Inhalation
vapour irritating at over 200 ppm; coughing, chest discomfort; nausea, vomiting, headache,
dizzyness, drowsiness, intoxication and loss of consciousness
Ingestion
irritating to mouth & throat; headache, dizzyness, drowsiness, diarrhoea, and nausea

(Butyl Acetate, contd)

EFFECTS OF CHRONIC EXPOSURE
General
24 hour application to rabbit skin caused severe local damage
Sensitising
mild sensitising
Carcinogenic
no
Reproductive Effect
experimentally in rats at1500 ppm (with maternal toxicity); no effect known in humans
Synergistic With

Estimated LD50
3200 mg/kg (oral, rabbit), 10,000 mg/kg (oral, rat); 4200 17,000mg/kg (skin, rabbit)
Estimated LC50
390 ppm (inhalation, rat); 68 g/m3 [= 16,000 ppm] (inhalation, cat)
NOTE: Interspecies variation in toxicity suggests that human toxicity may not be as high as given in Hazardous Ingredients.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Hands
Eyes
Respirator
Clothing

butyl rubber or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gloves (NOTE: certain branded gloves may be better)
safety glasses with side shields or chemical goggles
not required if ventilation is adequate (see TWAEV, (1) above), or use organic vapour cartridge
impervious (hands, above) apron , boots, long sleeves, if splashing is anticipated

6.

ENVIRONMENT

Leak Precaution
dyke to control spillage and prevent environmental contamination
<<
Fire Risk:
blanket spill with foam as a precaution against accidental ignition.
>>
Handling Spill
ventilate contaminated area; recover free liquid with explosion-proof pumps; absorb residue on an
inert sorbent, pick up with non-sparking plastic or aluminum shovels and store in closed containers
for disposal
do not flush to sewer; may be incinerated in approved facility
Waste Disposal
7.

STORAGE & HANDLING

Store and use in a cool dry environment, away from sources of ignition, heat and oxidising agents. Use with adequate
ventilation. Ground the container before handling to prevent static discharge which may cause ignition. Do not cut, drill, weld or
grind on or near this container. Avoid prolonged contact with skin and wash work clothes frequently. An eye bath and safety
shower should be available near the workplace.
8.

FIRST AID

SKIN:

Wash with soap and plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothing and do not reuse until thoroughly cleaned
or laundered.
EYES:
Wash eyes with plenty of water, holding eyelids open. Seek medical assistance promptly if there is any
irritation.
INHALATION: Remove from contaminated area promptly. CAUTION: Rescuer must not endanger himself! If breathing
stops, administer artificial respiration and seek medical aid promptly.
INGESTION:
Give plenty of water to dilute product. Do not induce vomiting (NOTE below). Keep victim quiet. If vomiting
occurs, keep victims head below hips to prevent inhalation of vomited material. Seek medical help promptly.
NOTE: Inadvertent inhalation of vomited material may seriously damage the lungs. The risk and danger of this is
greater than the risk of poisoning through absorption of this product. The stomach should be emptied under medical
supervision, after the installation of an airway to protect the lungs.
The information herein is given in good faith but no warranty, expressed or implied, is made.
