FUNDAMENTALS OF STRUCTURES
1. What is a Structure
2. How materials combine to form a structure
3. Use of Structures to cover spaces
4. Components of A structure
5. How different components in Structure resist forces
6. Types of Structures
APPROACH:
The lectures by the experts in the field will be arranged for the students so as to give them exposure to
the practical aspects construction materials and how they combine to cover space.
The emphasis should be given to actual working on materials, making of models and studying their
behavior under forces / loads.
SUGGESTED READINGS:
Order in Space by Keith Critchlow
Form, Space and Order by F.D.K. Ching
3 Dimensional Design by Richard K Thomas
Building Construction Illustrated, by F.D.K. Ching
Building Structures Illustrated: Patterns, Systems, and Design, by F.D.K. Ching
Why Buildings Stand Up, by Mario Salvadori
GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE TEACHERS:
To prepare the students to use their data/knowledge gained in the subject for practical application.
Groups of four to five students should be formed to study the behavior of a materials and their use and
to prepare the report on the same.
The students should preferably be made to co-ordinate the fabrication of models to demonstrate the
behavior of materials and how different components of structure combine to cover space.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE EXAMINER/PAPER SETTER:
The students will be judged on basis of the viva of the models and reports prepared by them.
