gases. Molecular structure of compounds. Selective organic reactions.
Solution: Types of solutions and their compositions. Phase rule, phase diagram of mono-component system. Properties of
dilute solutions.
Thermo-chemistry: Laws of thermo-chemistry; Heat of reaction, heat of solution, heat of combustion, heat of formation and
heat of neutralization; Experimental determination of thermal changes during chemical reactions.
Kinetics & Chemical Equilibrium: Chemical kinetics, chemical equilibrium.
Colloids: Classification of colloids; methods of preparation and purification of colloidal solutions; properties of colloids;
associated colloids; gels; emulsions; applications of colloids.
Electrochemistry: Electrolysis; Theories of electrolytic dissociation, conductivity and mobility of ions; Transport number,
ionic equilibrium; Ostwalds' dilution law; elementary idea about interionic attraction theory of Debye and Huckel; Activity

selection of cutting speed & feeds etc. regarding basic machine tools.
Study of Lathe Machines: Straight turning, contour turning, turning by various methods; internal & external thread cutting.
Study of Shaper Machine: Facing, slotting, angle slotting & profile cutting on shaping machine.
Study of Grinding Machines: Wheel dressing, surface grinding.
Study of Drilling Machine: Drilling, countersinking, counter boring etc.
Exercise: Simple job on lathe, shaping & drilling machine.

(Socio-Economic and Environmental Aspects of Development Project)
The aim of this course is to analyze the issues relating society and environment from perspective of the disciplines of
Economics. Major emphasis is on the following areas:
a) Technological soundness of a project.
b) Environmental impact: Rural-urban, crowding and human behavior, urbanization and slum, poverty, unemployment, land
issues, water resources and citizens role, deforestation and societal impact, power and environmental.
c) Economical Analysis of a project, Techno-economics.
d) Societal effects.

Fatigue: Fatigue failure; types of fatigue with fixed and varying amplitude, Combined stress fatigue properties; Notch
sensitivity, factors influencing fatigue strength; fatigue tests, Utilization of fatigue properties in design.
Creep: Creep-stress-time -temp. Relation for simple tension and combined stresses, Recovery creep and relaxation, Testing
techniques, Creep in tension, bending, torsion and buckling.
Fracture: Basic modes of fracture, Theories of linear elastic fracture mechanics, Griffith theory of brittle fracture, irwin's
theory of fracture in elastic plastic materials, stress intensity factors; fracture toughness testing, Interpretation of test data.

Introduction to polymeric materials, Mechanical and physical properties and limitations of applications,
Testing of properties, Identification of common plastics, Fillers, Additives, Mixing & compounding, Mills: Internal and
continuous, Polymer processing operations such as Extrusion, compression molding, Transfer molding, Injection molding,
blow molding and reaction injection molding. Design of products with plastics, Machining, fitting and welding of plastics,
