Activity for Chapter 3: Safety and Security

The institute follows an evacuation procedures as well as an organization
chart for it. Few of the safety measures that are practiced during earthquake drills
are as follows: a) take cover under desks or tables, b) face away from windows, c)
assuming that there is a crash, position on knees, head downs, hands clasped on
back of neck or head covered with book or jacket, and d) count aloud to sixty
because earthquakes usually last for a minute and counting is calming. For fire,
different precautionary measures are followed, such as an evacuation with the
affected area is highly implemented when fire occurs and students are gathered in
the quadrangle or in a safe place away from the fire.
The evacuation procedure of the institute is good, yet is not widely known. As
I was doing this activity, I hardly saw relevant information that actually tackles
about the evacuation procedures to be implemented during such cases; how much
more to those who has no time in reading such modules? There are several
problems that can occur during such calamities or tragedies. One is that with a
narrow hallway that is not enough for all the students to pass thru, I strongly think
that it would cause stampedes, or worse, some might be left in the affected area for
the reason that there would not be enough space for everyone to pass thru;
especially to those who does not have enough knowledge on what is not and what is
to do when such times come. Which leads to my second point, I think, one of the
problems that may also occur is the lack of knowledge in how to act during such
times will cause lives and more people to be harmed. Or, let us say that there are
enough drills performed, but no one knows if these will still be present in the time of
panics and everything. In my observation, fire exits of the school are also to narrow
for a massive of people to pass thru. Another problem which might also occur is the
structures of each building that must be addressed soon.
I suggest that the institute hold more drills for the students; for them to be
more aware of what are the things needed to be done during such times, and as

well as to nurture the students about the evacuation procedure. There should also
be man-power from the institute that can handle the large population of the school;
those who can make everyone follow. A good thing to do also is to put evacuations
plans and procedures in some areas around within each building.
Activity for Chapter 4: Education
Based on the story presented in chapter four, Deolitos main concern is the
education that was not given to him by his parents in his early age. This gives him a
hard time finding a job that earns enough to provide for his family. At the latter end
of the story, Deolitos concern was shifted about the exams he had to take to get
the promotion offered to him. Given that he cant read nor write, he then asks If he
can bring his literate wife with him to read the questions for him, and to write the
answers for him. But the answer remains a question and was left unanswered as the
story ended.
Mang Deolitos case is very similar to those who are beyond or in the poverty
line. They are the ones who are not sent to school during their early ages and are
forced to do labour in such young age. His situation is alike to those were not given
the choice but to work due to lifes circumstances.
There are many factors that hinder individuals to attend school. The most and
foremost factor of it is their life level; in which most are in the poverty line, and
worse, below it. At young ages, they are forced to earn for a living, provide for their
family and simply labour in order to continue living. When they have reached the
maturity level, in my own opinion, their interest regarding the value of education
becomes lesser. Why? Its because they have already seen the practicality of life,
and majority would just choose to continue living with it than pursuing their studies.
Age reason can also be a factor. When they have already done their part in working
for their family, an individual may be old enough, or his age wont be appropriate
for the grade level he would be entering; making him feel ashamed and the fear of
being bullied may also persist.
The problem with regards to Philippine illiteracy can be addressed in various
ways. One is for the government to give more attention to the less fortunate ones
and improve public schools which they can enter in. Public schools should be bigger,

providing enough places for each student to learn. Programs like the Alternative
Learning System is a huge help, because it lets one individual to learn without
undergoing years in a school, not to mention its free. It can also be addressed by
small groups or simply by a normal citizen like us; we can help them by doing
community services that includes teaching children the basics of reading and
writing, providing them with enough knowledge all throughout the service. The
illiteracy problem can be addressed effectively, if and only if, those who are helping
are doing it with utmost sincerity and willingness.

Activity for Chapter 5: Recreation

Barangay Maligaligs concerns are regarding their youth in the community. On
how they are affecting the daily route of the people, the troubles they are causing,
and as well as the activities they are doing that is shouldnt be done. Few of the
concerns were the group of teenagers been seen sniffing solvents, rugby, smoking
cigarettes and drinking alcohol in a public place which is the market. Another group
of teenagers were reportedly caused trouble and were into a fight against another
group of teenagers from the other barangay. Their concern is how they can lessen
these kinds of activities and how they can control such young adults and teach
them on what is and what is not to do; or simply how can they help and educate
these kinds of teenagers?
With regards to the concerns Barangay Maligalig is facing, there are some
suggestion I could give on how they can solve these kinds of problems and
concerns. The number one would be recreation. Recreation provides individual
things to focus on. It enables oneself to be productive rather than doing non
sensible things such us being into fights and doing illegal things. For men, an
effective recreation would be sports, specifically basketball. The head of the
barangay can set up a mini basketball league wherein teenage boys can participate.
Another would be construction; they can be hired or asked to do work regarding
carpentry. For women, sports can also be a good recreation, such as volleyball.
Another would be a work that involves sewing or also cooking. They can also hold
seminars for the teenagers that tackle about their role in the society. Anything that
can give them an activity to do will be big help for a change. It can lessen the

problems with the youth the community. Who knows, they can change with the
recreational activities they will be doing. And be engaged more to it and completely
forget the bad side of their life they once had. A quote perfectly suits this would be
an idle mind is where the devils play around. With recreational activities that
would consume most of their attention and time, they would no longer have the
want and the thinking of doing such things and will later on help them realize that
there are more sensible things that they can do that would actually help them be
better; than waste their lives for nothing.
