Raising up warriors in the battle for Americas youth

A Word from the Director

Recently I have been thinking about how Moses must have felt as he lived out what is written for us
in Deuteronomy 31. He is 120 years old and is nearing the end of his life and he says in verse 2
The Lord has said to me, You shall not cross the Jordan.
Rewind to earlier in Moses' life in Exodus chapter 3 and we see Moses in the desert, minding his
own business, tending his father-in-law's sheep when the Lord shows up and lays on Moses the
incredible task of leading the Israelites out of captivity. Moses was hesitant but soon relented and
followed the Lord on this amazing, God-sized journey. Now here they are, ready to enter the
promised land and God says, No, Moses, you arent going to go in. Was there heartbreak? Relief?
Grief? Anger? Bitterness? Acceptance?
Whatever it was that Moses was going through in that moment I believe I can relate in some small
way. It has been nine years since God first laid the vision for SLY on my heart. He has done some
amazing things and has brought that vision to a reality. He assembled a great team of prayer
partners, financial partners, volunteers, staff, and students. He has proven Himself faithful and
capable over and over. While there have been great accomplishments I also believe that SLY has a
lot of unrealized potential. But, much like Moses who couldnt enter the promised land, Shannon
and I are not the ones to carry SLY to the next level.
We have felt the Lords leading to step out of the role of Director of SLY. We have resigned our
duties effective November 1, 2015. The board is actively pursuing our replacements and plans on
continuing the vision of SLY in whatever fashion the Lord would lead then into. It has been a
privilege and honor to serve the Lord in this capacity and we look forward to what He will do with it
in the future. In the meantime Shannon and I have accepted a position pastoring our local church
and look forward to the next stage of our lives as we continue to serve Him.
If you are interested in knowing more about the position or if you know someone who may be
qualified please contact us at jaylwaddell@yahoo.com or call me at (208)659-8645.
God Bless,
Wayne

emember SLYs mission trips, the Transformer

Tour in 2009 and the Dying to Live (DTL) Tour in 2010?
Well, its been five years since the DTL Tour, and so we thought
it would be a good time to catch up with those who took part in
these mission trips to see where God has taken them in life s ince then!
I was 18, on the Trans former
Tour just graduated HS, and
struggling a lot with life. I am currently
stable and have overcome the things I
struggled with back then! I love going
to church and sinc e the trip I have
spent 4 1/2 years as a youth group
leader at my church. God's presenc e
on the trips and t he fellowship of
everyone around me had a huge
impact on me. I wouldn't be who I am
today without that piece of my life and
those people. I grew a lot during that
trip and loved everything about it.
One thing I remember is that I
met Eli from MWSB and because of
that I spent an amazing year at
MWSB and have conti nued to grow in
my relationship with God ever since.
- Jessica Deterts

During the DTL Tour I was going

through many struggles, trying to find out
who I really was with the Lord. Today, I'm
in college. My life has ups and downs, but
God has shown me that He is always there
for me and will never leave me. I attend
Campus Crusades for Christ, and find it a
joy to serve God every chance I get.
The people on the DTL Tour made
the biggest impact on me, meeting everyone
and making lifelong relationships. I look
back on the Tour and see how much Ive
changed in the last 5 years.
One thing I remember most is
really connecting with my brother. He had
just joined the army and I finally told him
how I truly felt. Our bond grew close that
day and we still have a good relationship
today.
- Jasmine Walker

I was 14 and 15 years old on

the Trans former Tour and the DTL
Tour, just starting high school. Pretty
awkward phase of life, just like for
most people at that age.
I currently live in Quarry ville
PA, work full time and begin c ollege
in the fall to get a masters in Social
Work. I don't really remember
anything
about the trips, but I
believe that is because I didn't allow
anything to happen. I was able to get
to know my sister better. And being
part of the cooking team always had
its stories and laughs. Just ask
Kirsten Scheffelmaier.
- Shannon Miller

On the first trip I honestly got mad at God, because I didn't feel like my life changed
the way I saw in others. It was part of a series of events that totally flipped my life upside
down by the time DTL rolled around a year later.
God used those trips, especially DTL, to show me my passion and gifting for preaching
and teaching. It set in motion my going on staff with SLY the following September, which
radically altered the next three years of my life.
My favorite memories are worshiping with the team in Fernwood, preaching in
Oakesdale, God's Chisel (the skit), and the Rain Skit. I'm now married, have two beautiful
kids, and live in NW Iowa.
- Will Dole

At the time of the tours I was

actively involved in all things
SLY. Now, I'm married to a SLY
alumnus (Levi Kilian). We have
been going to school in Lewiston,
have found a great church, and
will be moving to Charlotte, NC
for seminary this summer.
The tours' biggest impression on me was the
amazing work God can do in a group of young people.
Christ has the unique power to bring unity in purpose
among a diverse group of people. I remember those
days fondly, and the friendships made during the trip are
some that I still hold dear. I particularly loved the prayer
time in Priest Lake during Dying to Live. It was an
amazing morning of repentance and forgiveness, which
are both major themes of the gospel.
- Kynda McCulley Kilian
I had just graduated high school and was
preparing to go to Montana Wilderness School of
the Bible. I am now married and am a stay at
home mom of a 2 yr old daughter and infant son.
While on the Transformer Tour I was
challenged in sharing the hope found in the
Gospel with peers who were struggling in
different areas. The need to approach every
challenge in life through a Biblical lens is a
constant necessity. A favorite memory was the
dating skit with Anthony Pangallo when Ali
Middleton was my hands
and I accidentally bit her
finger in the middle of the
meal.
-HannahDonnerberg Detrick
I was 16 and 17 on the two trips, but looking
back it seems like I was much younger! I was so
self-conscious and self-absorbed at the time. More
than anything, I remember being very stressed
about my performance and how
I have learned so much about my weakness
and the grace of our Strong God since then.
However, honestly I often still struggle with the
same things. Daily, I must be reminded
that it is not my works, but it is faith in
Jesus Christ who alone has the power
to redeem, transform, and strengthen
me and those around me every day.

I was 16 and 17 the summers of the

mission trips. I remember the second distinctly
because it was, actually, the worst time of my
life. My best friend had died three months prior
and I was in the midst of a lot of hurt and
confusion. I remember crying every single
worship set of the trip.
I have just returned to Idaho after four
months of travelling in South East Asia with my
husband of almost one year! We are now living
and working in Coeur dAlene and love it. This
adventurous first year of marriage has been just
so good.
I learned Honesty &Transparency. On
the trip I was asked (told?) to share my
testimony, it was awful; because it was so hard!
But it was life changing. It was the first time
even those closest to me had heard me share my
heart so openly and it brought such freedom.
So many times I have thought back to the
feeling of sharing my burdens, confessing my sins,
and though it is so unnatural, it is so important.
My time on the mission trip taught me that
lesson and has helped me to make the choice to be
transparent since. I dont have to struggle alone!
So many dear memories! One, in
particular, was a middle of the night chat with
one of my closest friends. We whispered
and wept our way into the early
morning, surrounded by sleeping bodies,
sharing our hearts. Its still such a
defining memory in our friendship.

Our Vision
SLY exists to spread the good news of Jesus Christ and His saving power to rural
youth. This is accomplished by partnering with rural churches; by encouraging,
training and equipping leaders; and by challenging teens to pursue a life lived beyond
themselves to the glory of God.

Wanted: SLY Director

It is the desire of SLY's board to find a replacement for the Eves as Directors of the
ministry. Our ideal Director would be able to continue to grow the vision within the
churches we currently work with as well as other rural churches God may lead us to.
He would also provide leadership to the existing team of staff and volunteers.
Qualifications include a strong passion for the Lord, young people, and rural churches.
