(ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING)
Time: 3hours Max.Marks:80
Answer any FIVE questions
All questions carry equal marks
---
1.a) Explain the principle of arc initiation in a circuit breaker and how it is sustained?
b) In a system of 132KV, the line to ground capacitance is 0.01 µ F and the
inductance is 5 henries. Determine the voltage appearing across the pole of C.C.B.
if e magnetizing current of 5 amps (instantaneous values) is interrupted.
Determine also the value of resistance to be used across the contacts to eliminate
the restriking voltage. [8+8]
3. Classify the various types of over current relays and give their applications along
with appropriate characteristics. [16]
4. What are the rotor faults in an alternator? For such faults give their causes and
suggest protection measures. [16]
6. What are the advantages of distance protection over other types protection of
features? Describe any type of impedance relay and show how they provide
discriminatory protection. [16]

Answer any FIVE questions
All questions carry equal marks
---
1. In a short circuit test on a 132KV, 3-phase system, the breaker gave the following
results:
p.f. of the fault 0.4, recovery voltage 0.95 of full line value; the breaking current
is symmetrical and the restriking transient had a natural frequency of 16KHz.
Determine the rate of rise of restriking voltage. Assume that the fault is grounded.
[16]
4. Describe suitable protection schemes for internal and external fault protection of
an alternator. [16]
7. With a neat sketch explain the principle of operation of value type lightning
arrester. [16]
