8. (a) At 298 K, the solution of 0.1M KCl and 0.1M AgNO3 gave the resistance of
337.6 and 397.9 ohms respectively calculate
i. The cell constant
ii. Equivalent conductance of 0.1 M-AgNO3 given conductivity of 0.1M
KCl = 1.286× 10−3 S Cm−1 .
(b) The resistance of 0.1N KCl solution taken in conductivity cell is 86.8 ohms at
291 k and that of 0.05N Nacl solution is 203 ohms at the same temp - what
is the Equivalent conductance of 0.05 N NaCl solution? Conductivity of (Sp.
conductance) of 0.1N KCl at 291 K= 0.011192 cm−1 . [8+8]

4. Zinc - Zinc ion electrode potential is measured by coupling with a saturated calomel
electrode at 298 K. The zinc electrode is negative and the observed e.m.f. is
1.0045V. What is the cell reaction and the electrode potential of the zinc - zinc
ion electrode. Given that electrode potential of the calomel electrode is 0.2415V?

5. How does Kohlrauseh’s law of independent migration of ions help in determining the
equivalent conductivity of a weak electrolyte (like acetic acid) at infinite dilution?
Mention also the other applications. [16]

6. Discuss the general phase diagrams of two - component systems forming compounds
in solid state with

(a) Congruent melting points.


(b) Incongruent melting points. [8+8]

7. If the average diameter of gold particles in a sol containing 1 gm.of gold per dm3
is 4 µm and the density of gold is 20 g/cc., calculate the approximate number of
gold particles per dm3 . What osmotic pressure would you expect this sol to have
and what would be its freezing point? [16]

8. What is meant by activation energy? Using the concept of activation energy, explain
why reactions having the same concentration of reactants differ so much in their
rates. [16]

1. Derive an expression for the e.m.f. of the following concentration cell with liquid
junction potential.

2. (a) State the phase rule and discuss the derivation of the phase rule.
(b) Apply phase rule to a one component system having more than one triple

3. Derive the rate law expression for formation of HBr assuming steady state approx-

4. Calculate the dissociation constant of potassium iodide from the following data
: 37.8 gm of iodine were mixed up with one liter of carbondisulphide and one
liter of potassium iodide solution in water containing 7.92 gm of potassium iodide.
35.67gm of iodine were found to be present in carbondisulphide layer. The partition
coefficient is 410 in favour of carbondisulphide. [16]

6. (a) What is the size range of colloidal particles? Distinguish between a molecular
solution, a colloidal dispersion and a coarse dispersion.

(b) The molar conductance of a solution of aluminium chloride is found to be
130 scm2 mol−1 at 298 K. What would be its equivalent conductance at the

8. (a) Discuss in detail the catalytic mechanism.


(b) In the acid hydrolysis reactions A+H2 O + H+ → products where [H+ ] = 0.2
mol dm−3 and H2 O is present in large excess, the apparent rate constant (i.e.,
the pseudo first order rate constant) is 1.4 × 10−5 s−1 . Calculate the true rate
constant. [8+8]
