Section 1002 Trap Requirements

1002.1 Fixture Traps. Each fixture shall be
separately trapped by a liquid-seal trap , except as
otherwise permitted by this code. The vertical
distance from the fixture outlet to the trap weir shall
not exceed 24 inches, and the horizontal distance
shall not exceed 30 inches measured from the
centerline of the fixture outlet to the centerline of
the inlet of the trap. The height of a clothes washer
standpipe above trap shall conform to Section 802.4.
A fixture shall not be double trapped.

Section 1002.1
Exception #3 A grease interceptor intended to serve as a fixture
trap in accordance with the manufacturers installation
instructions shall be permitted to serve as the trap for a single
fixture or a combination sink of not more than three
compartments where the vertical distance from the fixture outlet
to the inlet of the interceptor does not exceed 30 inches and the
developed length of the waste pipe from the most upstream
fixture outlet to the inlet of the interceptor does not exceed 60
inches.

fixture being served. Always install where there
is easy access for cover removal and cleaning.

4. The cleanout plug should be installed over the

outlet of the interceptor.
5. The interceptor is to be installed using no-hub
couplings.

1002.2 Design of traps. Fixture traps shall be self-scouring. Fixture traps

shall not have interior partitions, except where such traps are integral wih
the fixture or where such traps are constructed of an approved material that
is resistant to corrosion and degradation.
1002.3 Prohibited Traps

6. Drum traps
Exception: Drum traps used as solids interceptors and drum traps
serving chemical waste systems shall not be prohibited.
1002.4 Trap seals. Each fixture trap shall have a liquid seal of not less than
2 inches and not more than 4 inches or deeper for for special designs relating
to accessible fixtures.

1003.1 Where required.

Interceptors and separators shall be provided to
prevent the discharge of oil, grease, sand and
other substances harmful or hazardous to the
building drainage system, the public sewer, the
private sewage disposal system or the sewage
treatment plant or processes.

1003.2 Approval.
The size, type and location of each interceptor
and of each separator shall be designed and
installed in accordance with the manufacturers
instructions and the requirements of this section
based on the anticipated conditions of use.
Wastes that do not require treatment or separation
shall not be discharged into any interceptor or
separator.

1003.2 Approval.
The size, type and location of each interceptor
and of each separator shall be designed and
installed in accordance with the manufacturers
instructions and the requirements of this section
based on the anticipated conditions of use.
Wastes that do not require treatment or separation
shall not be discharged into any interceptor or
separator.

1003.3.1 Grease Interceptors and

Automatic
Grease Removal Device required. (cont.)

Fixtures and equipment shall include:

pot sinks

pre-rinse sinks

soup kettles or similar devices

wok stations

floor drains or sinks into which kettles are drained

automatic hood wash units

dishwashers without pre-rinse sinks.

1003.3.2 Food Waste Grinders

Where food waste grinders connect to grease

interceptors, a solids interceptor shall separate the
discharge before connecting to the grease
interceptor. Solids interceptors and grease
interceptors shall be sized and rated for the
discharge of the food waste grinder. Emulsifiers,
chemicals, enzymes and bacteria shall not
discharge into the food waste grinder.

INSTALLATION
1. Zurn Light Commercial Grease Interceptors
should be installed as close as possible to the
fixture being served. Always install where there
is easy access for cover removal and cleaning.
2. A flow control must be installed as close as
possible to the underside of the fixture. The
flow control must be installed with the vent or
(air intake) on the downstream side of the orifice
plate. The vent connection is positioned to the
top of the flow control fitting and piped upward
higher than source of water, or to building vent
system
3. It is recommended that a cleanout tee be
installed before the flow control to access the
flow control orifice and clear debris.

4. The cleanout plug should be installed over the

outlet of the interceptor.
5. The interceptor is to be installed using no-hub
couplings.
6. Outlet piping should be connected to the
sanitary drain, and pipe size should be equal
to or larger than the inlet piping. Outlet pipe
should also be vented so the interceptor is not
siphoned.
7. Solid waste should not go into an interceptor.
Food grinder waste and other solids should
be captured in the sink or by a solids interceptor
before reaching the grease interceptor.

1003.3.4.2 Rate of flow controls

Grease interceptors shall be equipped with

devices to control the rate of water flow so that the
water flow does not exceed the rated flow. The
flow- control device shall be vented and terminate
not less than 6 inches (152 mm) above the flood
rim level or be installed in accordance with the
manufactures instructions.

1003.3.3 Grease interceptors and automatic

grease removal devices not required.

A Grease interceptor or an automatic grease

removal device shall not be required for individual
dwelling units or any private living quarters.

Chapter 8
Indirect/Special Waste

802.1 Where Required.

Food-handling equipment and clear-water waste
shall discharge through an indirect waste pipe as
specified in Sections 802.1.1 through 802.1.8.

Section 802.1.1 Food Handling.

Equipment and fixtures utilized for the storage,

preparation and handling of food shall discharge
through an indirect waste pipe by means of an air
gap.

802.2.1 Air gap.

The air gap between the indirect waste pipe and the
flood level rim of the waste receptor shall be a
minimum of twice the effective opening of the indirect
waste pipe.
Chapter 2 Definitions:
Air Gap (Drainage System): The unobstructed vertical
distance through the free atmosphere between the outlet
of the waster pipe and the flood level rim of the receptacle
into which the waste pipe is discharging.
Floor Level Rim: The edge of the receptacle from which
water overflows.

Waste
Receptor

802.3 Waste Receptors.

Every waste receptor shall be of an approved
type. A removable strainer or basket shall cover
the waste outlet of waste receptors. Waste
receptors shall be installed in ventilated spaces.
Waste receptors shall not be installed in
bathrooms or toilet rooms or in any inaccessible or
unventilated space such as a closet or storeroom.
Ready access shall be provided to waste
receptors.

802.3.1 Size of Receptors.

A waste receptor shall be sized for the maximum
discharge of all indirect waste pipes served by the
receptor. Receptors shall be installed to prevent
splashing or flooding.

802.3.2 Open hub waste receptors.

Waste receptors shall be permitted in the form of a
hub or pipe extending not less than 1 inch (25.4
mm) above a water-impervious floor and are not
required to have a strainer.

The 3 Bay Sink

802.1.8 Food Utensils, Dishes, Pots and

Pan Sinks

Sinks used for the washing, rinsing or sanitizing of

utensils, dishes, pots, pans, or service ware used in
the preparation, servicing or eating of food shall
discharge indirectly through an air gap or an air break
or directly connect to the drainage system.

Expansion Tanks Required?

Section 607 Hot Water Supply System
607.3 Thermal expansion control. A means of controlling increased pressure
caused by thermal expansion shall be provided where required in accordance with
Sections 607.3.1 and 607.3.2.
607.3.1 Pressure-reducing valve. For water service system sizes up to and
including 2 inches, a device for controlling pressure shall be installed where,
because of thermal expansion, the pressure on the downstream side of a
pressure-reducing valve exceeds the pressurereducing valve setting.
607.3.1. Backflow prevention device or check valve. Where a backflow
prevention device, check valve or other device is installed on a water supply
system utilizing storage water heating equipment such that thermal expansion
causes an increase in pressure, a device for controlling pressure shall be
installed.
