5.a) Describe with a typical block diagram the successive approximation method of
generating PCM waveform suitable for use in speech transmission.
b) Discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of delta modulation system
versus conventional PCM system. [10+6]

6.a) Describe the functioning of 8 QAM system

b) Binary data is transmitted over a microwave link at the rate of 1 Mbps and PSD at
the input of the receiver is 10-7 W/Hz. Find the average carrier power required to
maintain an average probability of bit error ≤ 10-4 for coherent FSK. What is the
channel bandwidth? [8+8]

7. A DMS X has five symbols x1, x2, x3, x4 and x5 with respective probabilities 0.2,
0.15, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5. Construct a Shannon - Fano code and a Huffman code for
X and compare their code efficiencies. [16]

8. Construct a code tree for the following encoder shown in figure and explain the
sequential decoding method. [16]
