Assignment- 3
1. (a)Write down the limitations of the first law of thermodynamics?
(b) A reversible heat engine operating between the thermal reservoirs at 900k and 300k is
used to drive a reversible refrigerator for which the temperature limits are 300k and 250 k
The engine absorbs 1800 kj of energy as heat from the reservoir at 900k and the nest
output from the engine refrigerator system is 360 KJ. Make calculations for the net heat
rejected to the reservoir at 300k?

2. (a) What is heat pump and heat engine?

(b) A reversible heat engine operates between reservoirs at 420 K and 280 K. If output
from the engine is 2.5 KJ. Determine the efficiency of the engine and its heat interactions
with the heat reservoirs. Subsequently the engine is reversed and made to operate as heat
pump between the same reservoirs. Make calculations for the coefficient of performance
of the heat pump and the power input required when the heat transfer rate from the 280k
reservoirs is 5 kW.
