Ansaldo Energia
and equipment
Ansaldo Energia state-of-the-art power generation technology stems from about a century of experience in the
various engineering fields.
Ansaldo Energia invests constantly and increasingly to
provide significant resources for development programmes, particularly in relation to combustion, thermofluid dynamics, automation and special materials.
One example of this is growing market demand for high
efficiency and low emissions, which has led to the
development of the cutting-edge VeLoNOx burners
and to a series of new patents for use in all upgraded
gas turbines models.
Service Offering
The Ansaldo Energia service offering leverages
advanced technologies, field expertise and flexibility in
relationships in order to enable utilities and plant managers to optimize plant efficiency and reliability, thus
reducing operating and life cycle costs.
In addition, Ansaldo Energia can offer service activities
for third party equipment thanks to its OSP business
line, which combines the expertise of the OEM with the
flexibility of the ISP.
Ansaldo Energia has chosen to focus on customer services in order to combine the proven design expertise,
manufacturing capabilities and commissioning skills of
its New Units business line with excellence in the aftersale phase, thanks in particular to rapidity of response
and intervention, technical capabilities and expertise, a
high quality supply chain, and well known flexibility in
matching customer needs.

Turbo Generators
Ansaldo Energia experience in the design and construction of turbogenerators up to 1220 MVA dates back to
1920: it covers mainly gas, steam, and gas & steam for
single shaft configurations and geothermal applications,
and offers a wide range of air-cooled, hydrogen-cooled
and hydrogen/water-cooled turbogenerators, creating a
comprehensive portfolio of highly reliable, efficient and
operationally flexible machines.
Since 1950, more than 700 units (over 300 in the last
ten years) have been manufactured, for a total installed
generating capacity of over 100 GVA.

package to fulfil the new energy market requirement.
The minimum technical load of the gas turbine, thanks
to the new VeLoNOxTM burners, will be lower than the 45%.
In this plant the new proprietary ZLD system has been
implemented to reduce the fresh water consumption and
to comply with the local regulation that prohibits any liquid effluents emission from the industrial sites. This system allows an industrial water recover of about the 98%.

specific architectural requirements to ensure environmental and landscape integration in such a way as to
reduce visual and acoustic impact. The buildings are
clad in panels that insulate from and absorb sound,
which represent one of the main visual features of the
plant, along with the big hexagonal concrete stack about
100 m high and the brick red colour used for various
plant sections, recalling the natural colours of the area
surrounding the plant. So far as power generation is concerned, the plant has been designed to meet the voltage
and frequency regulation requirements of the Italian
transmission network as stipulated by Terna (the Italian
National Grid operator), while on a functional level the
plant has been designed to deliver maximum operating
flexibility in accordance with legal atmospheric pollutant
emission criteria. The customer can vary load on a daily
basis in peak hours and during the weekend. Rapid
plant start up allows the customer to begin generating
power quickly, as well as to operate with different plant
configurations and variable loads, providing a rapid and
flexible response to network demand.
The project was given the Notice to Proceed by the customer in April 2008 and construction work began in February 2009. A constant focus on the real needs of the
customer and the climate of proactive collaboration
established, together with technical expertise and careful planning and monitoring of work, have made it possible to achieve the general project objectives and,
specifically, plant delivery (PAC issued by customer Sorgenia) in just 30 months from the NTP. Site work (civil
works, electromechanical assembly, start-up activities
and testing) involved up to about 850 people on site in
peak periods and was performed in such a way as to ensure the health and safety of both its own workers, and
those of associated companies and sub-contractors
working on site.
With the final hand-over of the plant to the customer,
planned for November 2010, the Long Term Service
Agreement covering maintenance will come into effect.
Under the terms of this contract Ansaldo Energia is committed for 7+7 years to managing and performing routine maintenance and repair work on the 2 gas turbine
sets, undertaking to maintain performance values with
minimum deterioration and high turbo generator availability values for the entire duration of the contract.
The agreement also entails operating parameter logging
and remote monitoring 24/7 from the diagnostic control
room at Ansaldo Energias Genoa production facility.

The contract of Ansaldo Energia with Enipower signed a milestone in terms of size, contents, services and Customer. Enipower
is the electric power operator with an important network of petrochemicals plants spread across Italy providing, ideal locations for
new capacityand with this contract planning 8 combined cycles for installation in four industrial areas owned by the group,
will deliver a total of about 3,850 MW. The plant, the first of four,
rated 1,050 MW featuring two natural gas unit rated about 800
MW and a 250 MW syngas unit. One of the key factor of Ansaldo
Energia success was the maintenance and assistance proposal
formulated using innovative criteria. Maintenance and assistance
alone are worth roughly a quarter of the entire contract amount.
The plant also highlights the growing trend in power generation
machinery demand for high base load plant.

Plant main features
Ballylumford is a 600 MW power plant divided in two
units: block 1 which is a 1+1 single shaft configuration
with the AE64.3A gas turbine, this block discharges over
100 MW of electrical power; block 2 which is a 2+1 configuration with two AE94.2 gas turbines to discharge over
500 MW of electrical power. Both the units are able to
fire not only natural gas, but also fuel oil as back up fuel.
