Prior knowledge : the students has been exposed simple past tense

Teaching aids/Material : Power point

Steps :
Set induction The teacher writes/show 3 sets of sentences on the board as below:
(3 minutes) 1 a) I have seen all of Steven Spielberg’s films
b) I saw his latest film last month.
2 a) Since 1990, she’s worked for three different newspapers.
b) She worked for the New Straits Time in 2003.
3 a) Have you ever been to Langkawi?
b) When were you in Langkawi?

The teacher ask students first to identify the two verb structures in each of
the sentences and establishes that each sentence a is an example of the
present perfect, while each sentence b is an example of the past simple. If
students are doubt about this, the teacher quickly recaps the rules of form for
each of these structures.

Step 1 The teacher asks the students to consider the differences in meaning in each
(10 minutes) case (1-3), and to see if they can come out with the rule for the difference
between the present perfect and the past simple tenses.
Notes: The Present perfect is used to talk about experience but without
specifying when it happened,
The past simple is used to talk about a specific experience, often at a
past time
To clarify this point, teacher draws the following timelines on the board and
asks students to match them to the examples a or b.
