ENGINE
The Challenger MT500B series features a strong, reliable Caterpillar engine. The Caterpillar
3056 engine is featured in the MT525B, 535B, 545B,555B and 565B models.
Bosch rotary fuel systems provide the fuel for the high-efficiency engine. The Caterpillar
engines are equipped with the Bosch VP30 Electronic Fuel Injection Pump. In addition, the
engines are Tier II emissions compliant.
The Cat 3056 engine features many minor changes and modifications that make them even
more reliable and more efficient through a wide range of tough applications. One noticeable
change is the use of a structural block which provides a narrow frame and allows the MT500B
series to achieve a tighter turning radius than previous MT500B series tractors.
In addition, the engine has seen dramatic improvements in noise reduction. Improvements in
engine materials and the redesign of noise contributing components have made dramatic
improvements. In fact, the MT500B series engines help to create an operator environment
with only 71 decibels inside the cab.

TECHSTAR (CVT)

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

CHALLENGER MT500B SERIES

The Challenger MT500B TechStar transmission is the most advance and respected
transmission in the world. Ever since 1998 this transmission has changed the way
we look at tractors. The one thing that makes this transmission superior to the rest
is the infinite speeds. There are no longer gaps between gears, which can be experienced in typical shifting transmissions. Engine speed and ground speed can be
controlled separately. With a typical gear transmission to get top speed the engine
must be at full speed and the transmission in high gear. With the TechStar CVT
full ground speed can be achieved at as low as 1550 engine RPM.

Cont inuously Var iable Tr ansmission

SIMPLE CONCEPT

Hydrostatic Section
Variable displacement pump drives the hydraulic motor
The angle of the pump determines how much oil is delivered and hence the speed that the motor turns
Mechanical Section
Drive through the epicyclic to a range control (high/low) onto a shaft which drives directly onto the collecting shaft
66

TECHSTAR (CVT)

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

CHALLENGER MT500B SERIES

The TechStar CVT transmission alows

the operator to have the advantage of infinite speeds. With infinite speeds the
operator can choose speeds between 0
and 31 MPH. The operators can select
engine speed independently of ground
speed.

SV1 and SV2 speed governor function

make it possible to memorize and easily
recall a ground speed. There are two
separate memory keys (SV1 and SV2)
making it possible to program two different ground speeds.

The TechStar CVT offers the highest

speed range in the industry. 0-17 MPH
in low range and 0-31 MPH in high
range.
With the infinite speed between 0 and 31
MPH the operator can select any desired
speed from as slow as 60 ft/hr to 31
MPH.

67

TECHSTAR (CVT)

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

CHALLENGER MT500B SERIES

The TechStar CVT uses both mechanical

and hydrostatic power which allows the
transmission to operate extremely efficient. The TechStar transmission has
fewer moving parts than a conventional
transmission .

The TechStar CVT transmission is very

easy to access for maintenance. The
tractor does not need to be split into two.
As well, pressure and diagnostic tests
can be performed to allow the mechanic
to solve the issue without disassembling
the tractor.

Speed changes can be controlled with

the left or right hand. Increases and decreases in speed as well as Forward /
Reverse speed changes can be accomplished with the FNR shuttle.

68

TECHSTAR (CVT)

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

CHALLENGER MT500B SERIES

Pedal mode. The TechStar can be driven

in pedal mode. When pedal mode is selected the foot pedal controls engine
speed and ground speed. The farther the
pedal is pushed the higher the engine
RPM the higher the ground speed.
There is a standard mode and an economy mode. In standard mode the engine
can achieve rated engine RPM. In economy mode the engine is limited to 1800
RPM but full ground speed is still available

Using the Dot Matrix screen located in

the dash the operator can set the default
forward and reversed speeds
The speeds that SV1 and SV2 are also
viewed from this screen
The set speeds are retained even if the
machine is shut down.

The Turbo Clutch allows the operator to

us the brakes to stop the tractor without
using the clutch pedal. This is beneficial
to loader work, as well as any practice
that demands the operator to inch their
way into an object.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

CHALLENGER MT500B SERIES
DIFFERENTIAL, BRAKES, AND FINAL DRIVES
The MT500B series tractors feature a tested, proven design on their rear differential, brakes,
and final drives. The rear differential lock can easily be engaged with the use of a rocker
switch located on the right console. The differential is electro-hydraulically engaged to ensure
a proper, smooth engagement.
Coupled with the rear differential system is the inboard rear planetary final drives. The final
drives on the MT500B series tractors operate in an oil bath to ensure proper lubrication,
reduced heat, and long wear life.
The MT500B series tractors have smooth progressive braking supplied by a wet, rear disc
braking system. This system consists of ring pistons, brake disks, and steel backing plates. In
addition, the brake discs are immersed in hydraulic oil to keep the discs lubricated and cool.
The rear brakes are hydraulically actuated using a master cylinder at the brake pedals and a
slave cylinder or ring piston within the rear axle housings. Independent, suspended pedals
operate the individual turning brakes. For transport, the pedals can be latched together to
provide equal braking effort to each wheel. Tractors with Power Front Axle feature four-wheel
braking during transport with latched brake pedals. Brake actuation will electro-hydraulically
engage the PFA (Power Front Axle) clutch, which activates the front wheel braking effect.
Challenger tractors also feature a lever-operated park brake that is independent from both the
pedal operated brakes and the transmission park brake.

71

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

CHALLENGER MT500B SERIES
Differential Lock Controls
The differential locks on the MT500B series
tractors are controlled by convenient rocker
switches located on the right console. These
switches provides quick, convenient access
for the operator to engage the differential
locks when needed.

Front and Rear Differential Lock

Both the front and rear differential locks on the
MT500B series tractors are electrohydraulically engaged to ensure smooth, accurate locking and avoid transmission damage. This feature increases productivity and
ease of operation.

Automatic Four Wheel Braking

When both foot pedals are locked together
during transport, four wheel braking will be
engaged when the brakes are depressed.
When the brakes are applied, the PFA is
automatically engaged and braking power is
supplied to all four wheels.
This feature
increases operator safety when towing heavy
loads.

72

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

CHALLENGER MT500B SERIES
Rear Wet Disk Brakes
Wet rear disk brakes provide smooth,
progressive, fade free braking.
The wet
system also keeps the disks cool during
operation which maintains constant braking
power and reduces fade. Wet disks also
reduce wear to provide for a long service life
and reduced maintenance.

Independent Parking Brake

MT500B series tractors are equipped with an
independent parking brake. Operated by a
hand throw lever, this brake is independent
from the transmission parking brake and the
hydraulic braking system.

Flange axles are standard equipment on the
Challenger MT525B. The MT535B has the option for a flanged axle. The MT535, 545, 555
and 565 all come standard with a bar axle.
Flange type axles provide a narrow chassis
width for utility/row crop tractors, yet allow the
ability to adjust tread setting to fit a variety of

82MM (diameter) Bar Axles

The Challenger MT535B, 545B, 555Band
565B tractors are fitted with standard 82mm
diameter axles. These tractors will have the
option for bar lengths of either 82 or 113
inches.
Bar axles and wedge clamping wheel hubs
allow infinite wheel tread width adjustment.
Variable axle lengths allow the tractor to fit a
wide range of field operations. The 82mm
axle is adaptable for a wide range of
applications.
95MM (diameter) Bar Axles
Challenger MT555B and 565B tractors will be
fitted with 95mm (diameter) 113 inch wide axles and have the option of an 82 inch bar.
This axle option provides wider rear wheel
tread width adjustments, and also provides
extra space for dual wheel application.
The added strength of the thicker axle also
provides improved adaptability for high torque
field applications.

74

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

CHALLENGER MT500B SERIES
Optional Powered Front Axle
Increased drawbar pulling power and front wheel traction is available on the MT500B series
tractors with the optional Power Front Axle (PFA). The Power Front Axle is designed as an
integral component to the tractor, not an add-on part. The front axle is also matched for the
horsepower and chassis size of each tractor model. A single piece, cast-iron, center housing
and heavy outboard planetary housings provide high load carrying capacities. A maximum
front wheel turn angle of 55 degrees and axle oscillation of +/-11 degrees maintains positive
tire to ground contact.
The MT500B series Power Front Axle features center line drive. The front axle pivots at the
front differential pinion shaft. There are no universal joints in the drive line from the transmission to the front axle. On the left hand console, a rocker switch engages the front axle drive
electro-hydraulically on the go.
In addition, the Power Front Axle will also engage when the front brakes are both pressed at
the same time. This automatic engagement gives the operator four wheel braking capability.
This increases the operators safety and control when carrying heavy loads.
Optional Power Front Axle
Tractor wheel slippage can be reduced and
drawbar horsepower can be increased with the
addition of the powered front axle. Studies
show that drawbar pulling power can increase
approximately 20% over a conventional 2WD
tractor of equal horsepower.
This added
efficiency increases the operators output and
reduces energy loss in the field.

Power Front Axle Cast Iron Housing

The one-piece center housing is designed to
handle shock loads and torsional twisting while
operating in a wide variety of operations. The
axle housing will also handle heavier loads
than the two wheel drive axle during loader
use. The cast iron housing provides added
durability and service life to the tractor power
train.
75

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

CHALLENGER MT500B SERIES
Optional Suspended Front Axle
The suspended front axle is an option to the PFA on MT500B series tractors. The key advantage of the front axle suspension system is the increased ground contact it provides by reducing wheel slippage and power hop. When the tractor encounters rough terrain, the front axle
will remain on the ground pulling the tractor rather than jumping and allowing the wheels to
spin freely. In addition, the front suspension provides greater steering control and reduces
fore and aft pitching when towing heavy loads. With a simple design similar to the Power
Front Axle and ease of maintenance, the suspended front axle will give solid performance
while increasing productivity.
Finally, the suspension system provides a convenient on / off switch which allows the system
to be disengaged during heavy loader and grading operations. In the off position, the
hydraulic accumulators allow the hydraulic ram to lower and rest on the axle. When lowered
on the axle, the Massey Ferguson system still maintains the full range motion of +/-11 of
oscillation.

76

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

CHALLENGER MT500B SERIES
Front Suspension System
The front suspension system allows the tractor
to keep the front tires in constant contact with
the ground. This eliminates excess slippage
and reduces both tire wear and damage to the
front drive train. Additional benefits include
more responsive steering, smoother ride at
high speeds, and reduced load shocks.
Finally, the operator will also notice a smoother
ride.

Easy Disengagement Switch

A convenient rocker switch allows the front
suspension to be disengaged for certain
operations including heavy loader work and
grading. In the off position, the hydraulic
suspension ram locks lowers the system till it
rests on the axle. The entire axle will still
maintain the full range of oscillation.
This feature allows tractors equipped with the
suspension system to be used in the most
demanding of applications.

Single Center Pin Frame Mount

This feature provides a single mounting point
for front axle. In addition to allowing a full
range of motion, the single mount reduces
maintenance time by having a single service
point.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

CHALLENGER MT500B SERIES
HYDRAULICS
The MT500B series Challenger tractors have the option for two different hydraulic systems.
Customers have a choice of a Closed Center Pressure Flow Compensated or a load sensing
hydraulic system. The two systems maintain the same external features and controls on the
valve cage and within the operator cab. The main difference between the systems is internal.
Each system has specific advantages depending on the application.
The MT500B Series tractors utilize a large, spin-on cartridge hydraulic oil filtration system.
The spin on filter allows the operator to perform quick, easy maintenance of the hydraulic
system. Also, the addition of system monitor lights on the cab console alert the operator when
service is needed to the hydraulic system.
Two hydraulic remotes, power beyond circuit, and a load sensing line are standard on the
MT500B Series. The standard hydraulic package includes two mechanical valves. Options
are available to add additional remote valves up to a total of four hydraulic remotes. The
MT500B series also features standard float and detent locks.

83

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

CHALLENGER MT500B SERIES
Closed Center Hydraulics
The Closed Center, Pressure and Flow Compensated hydraulic system supplies a maximum
flow of 29-gpm. The axial piston pump is mounted externally on the transmission and driven
through an intermediate gear from the PTO shaft. This pump supplies high pressure oil
(2900-psi) for steering, remotes, and 3-Point. A low pressure divider valve directs oil to
operate the PTO clutch, PFA, differential lock and transmission lubrication. When there is no
demand for high pressure oil, the system reverts to a low pressure standby mode. The
closed center, pressure and flow compensating hydraulic system provides oil flow to multiple
functions simultaneously.

Touchmaster Hydraulic System
The TouchMaster system is an optional feature on the MT500B series. The Touchmaster
system is comprised of a joystick mounted to
the seat armrest which controls two electrohydraulic proportional spool valves. This option can be combined with up to two additional
mechanical remotes to build a four remote
system. The Touchmaster system adds comfort and convenience to hydraulic operations.

TouchMaster Memory System

On tractors equipped with Touchmaster hydraulics, a memory function is available to remember and set flow rates. This function
memorizes the flow rate of the output and input of each spool valve controlling the expansion/retraction of the hydraulic cylinders. For
example, the Touchmaster system can be
used to control the rate of drop on a hydraulically lifted implement, thus reducing potential
damage to the axle and hydraulic ram
mounts.

TouchMaster used as a Loader Joystick

When placing a loader on a TouchMaster
equipped tractor, the system can be utilized
in place of a loader joystick system. This
eliminates the need for the operator to
purchase extra loader equipment. The loader
can also be plumbed directly into the hydraulic
manifold at the rear of the tractor leaving all
the hydraulic couplers clear at the rear of the
tractor.
