BC Hydro would like to notify the public that the Navigational Lock at the Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam
will be closing at 1:00 p.m. on August 10, 11 and 12. The lock will continue to be accessible to the

This year, the annual Toadfest

event will be held on Wednesday
August 12, from 4 to 7 pm at
Summit Lake Provincial Park,
south of Nakusp. The warm
spring and hot summer has the
annual migration of toadlets
starting earlier than has ever
been seen before, and the
toadlets are already on the move.
The peak toadlet movement may
have come and gone, but there
will still be lots of activities to do
and displays to see at Toadfest.
The free event, now in its
sixth year, is coordinated by the
Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP), with
support from BC Parks, the
Ministry of Forests, Lands and
Natural Resource Operations,
Columbia Basin Trust, and the
Ministry of Transportation and
Infrastructure.
We anticipated that the
migration would be earlier this
year because early breeding was
observed, says Crystal Klym,
Program Manager for the FWCP
in the Columbia Region. Then
the very hot summer accelerated
the growth of the tadpoles, and
large numbers of toadlets were
already moving by the third
week of July.

Maintenance Supervisor
Opportunities exist for an Instrument Mechanic to complement our Maintenance crews.

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor the successful candidate will be demonstrably
committed to achieving exceptional safety performance and will work with mill groups
to contribute to our continuous improvement in reliability and productivity. Successful
candidate will have a proven track record of improving control systems, troubleshooting
mill processes, repairing process equipment and optimizing control system effectiveness.
Ideal candidate will have interprovincial qualications plus additional technical
training in an appropriate specialty. Preference will be given to those with previous pulp
mill experience. The ability to work within a exible work environment is necessary.
The successful candidate will bring a proven ability to collaborate with Supervisors,
Tradesmen, and Operations to achieve outstanding results and will have solid knowledge
of world-class maintenance practices, including predictive and preventive maintenance.

eidi (Adelheid) Gumm

(nee Boschenstein) was
born in Bern, Switzerland on
August 12, 1939. She passed
away at her home in Kaslo on
July 20, 2015, utterly at peace
and looking forward to joining
her beloved Don, who had predeceased her in 2000.
Heidi was smart, fun, positive,
organized and often willful (in
a good way). Perhaps it was
because she was Swiss, but
she always loved chocolate. As
a child she sometimes ran out,
and would sell a story to her
younger brother for a piece of
his chocolate. He willingly paid
because Heidi was such a great
storyteller. Heidi always did
know how to get things done.

She had a passion for dancing.

As a teenage girl, Heidi often went out to dance and didnt stop until the morning
came and her feet hurt. She also loved the theatre and took part in many productions in her young life.
In her thirties, Heidi headed o for adventure in Toronto, where she lived for
eleven years. During that time, she fell in love with Canada and knew that eventually she would call it home. Back in Bern though, while working as a receptionist at the British Embassy, she met Donald Gumm, the love of her life. Happily,
the adoration was mutual and they were married in April 1987. Heidi wore traditional Swiss garb, as did their guests.
After the wedding, Heidi and Don lived in a small Swiss village in an old farmhouse with lots of owers and animals. Heidi loved the place, and family and
friends enjoyed many parties there. Living in Switzerland, and then in Kaslo,
where they settled down in the 1990s, Don and Heidi thoroughly enjoyed their
married life. The couple always seemed to be having fun traveling, having
friends over, just being together. The photos throughout Heidis house attested
to the happy, often goofy times they spent together until Dons untimely passing
thirteen years after their wedding.
In his last days, Don told Heidi that when the lights were ashing in the sky, he
would come to get her. At 00:35 am on Monday, July 20, 2015, the lights suddenly ashed brightly in the sky as a dry lightning storm lit up Kootenay Lake and
Heidi was gone.
Heidi is survived by her grand-niece Selina Boschenstein and great grand-nephew Armon, grand-niece Flurina Boschenstein and great grand-nephew Jon, stepson Mark Simmins and step-grandson Gustaf, sister-in-law Madlaina Boschenstein and half brother Heinz Hanni. She will also be remembered with love by
her many friends on two continents.

The third annual Idaho

Peak Mountain Marathon and 10 km Trail Run
presented by the Kootenay Sufferfest Society was
record breaking! The event
attracted 39 racers from
across Western Canada for
the races held on July 26 in
New Denver, the highest
number of participants the
event has seen.
The event consisted of
two races. The Idaho Peak
Mountain Marathon, was a
foot race using New Denvers trail network leading to
Idaho Peak and back covering a distance of 46 kms and
a vertical mile of elevation!
The 10 km Trail run shuttled
participants to Three Forks
where they raced down the
Galena Trail to the finish
line at Lucerne Elementary
Secondary School.
The fastest record time
for the Idaho Peak Mountain Marathon was set

of 4:07:35, breaking the previous record from 2014 by

Marathon, 1st place was Jody
Lownds from Revelstoke in
a time of 5:22:09, 2nd place
was Naomi Humenny from
Kimberley (5:39:40) and 3rd
place was Mishka Heimowski
from Nelson (5:41:52).
The 10 km Run mens winner was Danny Semenoff
from Nelson and ladies Winner Lori McWilliam from
Genelle. Local participants
included Kolibri Drobish
from Hills coming in a close
2nd overall in the ladies 10
km in a time of 44:50 and
Janis Neufeld and son Elias
Lampimaki from Nakusp
in the 10 km. Elias was the
youngest competitor at age
10.
It was a fun, family friendly
event with many father-son,
mother-son and motherdaughter duos taking part!
The oldest competitor was
Paul Doyle from Oliver who
turned 69 the following day
and participated with his two
sons Rory and Liam in the
mountain marathon.
The feedback from the racers was that the event was
incredibly well organized,
and the courses were beautiful and fun. This event will
definitely continue to grow
and attract visitors in the
years to come!

~ July 26, 2015
It is with gratitude, for a long
life, well lived, that we announce the
passing of our mother, Svava Hansen.
She passed away peacefully at Mountain
Lake Seniors Community in Nelson, BC.
Svava came to Nelson in 1943
from Arborg, Manitoba, and in 1946
settled in Ainsworth where she and
her husband Hans raised their family.
She left Ainsworth in 1989 to move
to Calgary where she resided until
January 2012. In January 2012,
after she broke her hip, she moved to
Mountain Lakes, where she resided
until her passing.
Svava, the social butterfly, cherished
time with her family and friends, and
could strike up a conversation and
have a chin wag with anyone she
met along the way. All who knew her
will at one point have fallen victim
to a hard-fought battle with her over
a game of cribbage. She also loved
her bingo games and darts; she even
bragged about her bulls eyes.
Svava is survived and will be missed
dearly by her daughters, Denise
(Floyd), Sharon, Gail (Gordon) and
Diane, son Hans (Michelle) and sonin-law Alan Tarr. The spunk, kindness
and caring personality of Crazy
Grandma Svava will live on through
her 13 grandchildren, 23 greatgrandchildren and one great-greatgranddaughter.
She passes on from this world
to meet up again with her mother

already food stressed locales. Reports of increased sightings and bear activity near human areas are already beginning to trickle in.
A shortage of natural foods is very probable at the very
time it is imperative for bears to continue packing on the
pounds in preparation for hibernation. To exacerbate the
situation, the time for gorging normally coincides with
the ripening of our own apples, plums and other fruit.
To a bear, the intake of the most possible calories before
hibernation is a matter of survival. Studies show that a
malnourished female bear may not produce cubs.
Its easy to become complacent about managing human
attractants, especially when nothing has been happening.
Its also very understandable that if you have never had a
bear get into your uncontrolled attractants such as garbage, that you may believe that things are under control
and that nothing will ever happen. However, if you continue to leave your attractants unsecured, bears will come.
It may be today, tomorrow, next week or in five years, but
they will come! And, under current circumstances, this
could be the year! Many well behaved, perfectly wild
bears spend many years, or even entire lifetimes, avoiding
people, their properties and their delicious smelling stuff:
beehives, poultry, livestock, pet food, compost, barbeque
grills and woodpiles that attract rodents and insects.
However, when it comes down to survival during years
of natural food declines, these same bears will muster
up enough courage to change their habits where human
attractants are readily available.
Lets be extra super vigilant this season and manage
our attractants responsibly, that is, in a bear proof manner. Lets not cause the unnecessary death of a bear. Please

A recently constructed toad tunnel and wildlife fencing, installed by the Ministry of Transportation, Highways
and Infrastructure, and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and
Natural Resource Operations, have already proven very
successful in guiding toads and toadlets safely under the
road but there are still large sections of the road where
they have no protection from the traffic.

Minnow Derby
A derby for children for the past 16 years, is now

upgraded to a derby for both kids and families. This free
annual event is an appreciation gesture to our community
for support given to Gill and Gift over the year.
Fish anywhere in Kootenay Lake. The weigh-in and fun
take place at 2 pm at Gill and Gift.
The derby is to get kids and families out fishing, to

decrease the overabundant numbers of pike minnow and
suckers in the lake as well as help the fish biologists investigate the feeding habits of coarse fish in our lake in an
effort to better understand fish management of Kootenay
Lake. All fish will be given to fish and wildlife authority for
further redirection to support the no waste law.
The derby is on Saturday of the September long weekend this year September 5 starting at 7:30 am, and the
last weigh-in is at 2pm in the Gill and
Gift parking lot. There will be a BBQ,
prizes, and trophies to follow.
