LESSON PLAN FOR YOUNG LEARNERS 1

Topic: Animals
Time: 45-60 minutes
Age: ~4-7 (no writing/reading skills)
Number of classes needed: 1-4 (depends on the variety of subtopics
chosen by the teacher)
INTRODUCTION (PRE-TASK) ~5-10 min
In this part, the teacher talks in Serbian with children about animals
and tries to activate their knowledge in order to prepare them for class
activities. They talk about groups of animals (pets, farm animals, wild
animals, birds, sea animals, etc.).
They also talk about where animals can be found (expected answers:
backyard, zoo, forest, sea, trees, etc.).
Lessons: PETS, FARM ANIMALS, ZOO.
Sub-lessons: COLOURS, TYPES OF HABITAT, ANIMAL SOUNDS.
TASK 1 PICTURES ~10 min
The teacher introduces flashcards/pictures of animals. First, the
teacher introduces PETS. The children recognize the pictures and name them
in Serbian. Then, the teacher tells the children how we call those animals in
English. The children listen and repeat. After that, the teacher distributes
pictures of animals which the children can colour.
TASK 2 THEME SONG ~20 min*
Before the children start colouring the animals, they listen to a song
about animals in English. The song is about pets (or other animals) and they
learn how to sing it. The teacher repeats the words with them (they learn the
song part by part) and they all sing along. In addition, dancing is desirable so
that the children can memorize the song better.
If the song has animal sounds within it, the children repeat those
sounds as well (English sounds, stressing the difference between English and
Serbian sounds).
TASK 3 COLOURING + WRITING ~15 min
After they are done with the song, the children colour the pictures in
colours they want / in the colours the teacher told them to.
The children write the names of the animals they had coloured in
English (provided that the teacher had previously taught the children the
alphabet).

SUMMARY OF THE CLASS ~5-10 min

The teacher repeats all the new words they had learned during that
class.

HOMEWORK
The children are given extra pictures of the same animals to colour at
home.
THE FOLLOWING CLASSES
The children repeat the words and the song from the previous class.
New animals are introduced.
New song(s) is/are introduced.
**Story telling/Reading time.
*If there is not a separate song for each group of animals, the children learn
all the animals from the existing song first. During the classes, the teacher
teaches them how to say animal sounds in English for different animals.
Instead of the song, the teacher introduces the habitat and draws/places
animals where they belong by giving several examples. The children place
the remaining animals into the specific groups (pets backyard/house; farm
animals farm; wild animals wilderness/zoo; sea animals sea; birds
trees/air).
After all the animals from the song are covered, the children learn to sing
and dance to the song.
**The teacher chooses a story about animals which they read during the
class.

Age: ~5-8 (the children can write/read)

The difference is in more writing exercises, where the children learn not
only how every animal is written down, but also how to write full sentences
in present simple about their habitats (e.g. Cows live on the farm.), their
sounds (e.g. Lions roar.), etc.
They can also do word connecting exercises (rearranging words to
make a full sentence, connecting sounds/habitats/colours with animals, etc.).
