WhatdogreatmenlikeBenjaminFranklin,ThomasJefferson,andTheodoreRooseveltallhaveincommon?
TheyallwereproficientinLatin.
FromtheMiddleAgesuntilaboutthemiddleofthe20thcentury,Latinwasacentralpartofamansschooling
intheWest.Alongwithlogicandrhetoric,grammar(asLatinwasthenknown)wasincludedaspartofthe
Triviumthefoundationofamedievalliberalartseducation.FromLatin,allscholarshipflowedanditwas
trulythegatewaytothelifeofthemind,asthebulkofscientific,religious,legal,andphilosophicalliterature
waswritteninthelanguageuntilaboutthe16thcentury.Toimmerseoneselfinclassicalandhumanisticstudies,
Latinwasamust.
GrammarschoolsinEuropeandespeciallyEnglandduringthistimewereLatinschools,andthefirstsecondary
schoolestablishedinAmericabythePuritanswasaLatinschoolaswell.Butbeginninginthe14thcentury,
writersstartedtousethevernacularintheirworks,whichslowlychippedawayatLatinscentralimportancein
education.ThistrendforEnglishlanguagelearningacceleratedinthe19thcenturyschoolsshiftedfromturning
outfutureclergymentograduatingbusinessmenwhowouldtaketheirplaceinanindustrializingeconomy.An
emphasisontheliberalartsslowlygavewaytowhatwasconsideredamorepracticaleducationinreading,
writing,andarithmetic.

WhileLatinhadbeendyingaslowdeathforhundredsofyears,itstillhadastrongpresenceinschoolsuntilthe
middleofthe20thcentury.Beginninginthe1960s,collegestudentsdemandedthatthecurriculumbemore
open,inclusive,andlessEurocentric.AmongtheirsuggestedchangeswaseliminatingLatinasarequired
courseforallstudents.Toquellstudentprotests,universitiesbegantoslowlyphaseouttheLatinrequirement,
andbecausecollegesstoppedrequiringLatin,manyhighschoolsinAmericastoppedofferingLatinclasses,
too.Aroundthesametime,theCatholicChurchreviseditsliturgyandpermittedprieststoleadMassin
vernacularlanguagesinsteadofLatin,thuseliminatingoneofthepublicslasttiestotheancientlanguage.
WhileitsnolongerarequirementforamantoknowLatintogetaheadinlife,itsstillagreatsubjecttostudy.
IhadtotakeclassesinLatinaspartofmyLettersmajorattheUniversityofOklahoma,andIreallyenjoyed
it.Evenifyourewelloutofschoolyourself,thereareamyriadofreasonswhyyoushouldstillconsider
obtainingatleastarudimentaryknowledgeofthelanguage:
KnowingLatincanimproveyourEnglishvocabulary.WhileEnglishisaGermaniclanguage,Latinhas
stronglyinfluencedit.MostofourprefixesandsomeoftherootsofcommonEnglishwordsderivefromLatin.
Bysomeestimates,30%ofEnglishwordsderivefromtheancientlanguage.Byknowingthemeaningofthese
Latinwords,ifyouchancetocomeacrossawordyouveneverseenbefore,youcanmakeaneducatedguessat
whatitmeans.Infact,studieshavefoundthathighschoolstudentswhostudiedLatinscoredameanof647on
theSATverbalexam,comparedwiththenationalaverageof505.
KnowingLatincanimproveyourforeignlanguagevocabulary.MuchofthecommonlyspokenRomanic
languageslikeSpanish,French,andItalianderivedfromVulgarLatin.Youllbesurprisedbythenumberof
