Basic Concepts and Analysis of Data


Standards. Dimension and Units. Generalized
measurement system. Basic Concept of Dynamic
Measurement. Sensor dynamics. Dynamic system
response. Distortion. Error in experimental data.
Uncertainty Analysis, Statistical methods of analysis for
modeling uncertainty. Regression schemes for modeling
of data and methods of graphical analysis and
representation.

Basic Electrical Measurement and Sensing Devices


Measurement devices: Electromagnetic force, waveform
measures, Basic analog and digital meters, input
circuits, amplifier (differential and operational),
transformers, power supplies, signal conditioning and
Electronic / digital voltmeters, Oscilloscopes.
Sensing devices: Transducers, differential transformers
(LVDT), capacitive / peizoelectric transducers,
photoelectric effect, photoconductive transducer,
photovoltaic cells, ionization transducer, magnetometer
search coil and hall effect transducer.

Pressure Measurement
Mechanical devices, dead-weight tester, bourdon-tube
gauge, diaphragm and bellows gauge, bridgman gauge,
McLeod gauge and Knudsen gauge.

Flow Measurement
Positive-displacement
method,
flow-obstruction
methods, sonic nozzle, flow measurement by drag
effect, hot-wire and hot-film anemometers, magnetic
flow meters, LDA, other methods of flow measurement,
Measurement of viscosity.

Measurements of Temperature and Thermal


Property
Introduction to temperature and heat transfer. Ideal gas
thermometer. Temperature measurement by mechanical
effects, electrical effects, and through radiation. Effect
of heat transfer on temperature measurement. Thermal
conductivity measurements of solids, liquids and gases.
Convection heat-transfer measurements. Heat-flux
meters. Gas diffusion. Calorimeter. pH measurement.

Force, Torque, Strain, Motion and Vibration


Measurement
Mass balance measurement, Elastic elements for force
measurement, torque measurement, stress and strain,
strain measurements, electrical resistance strain gauges
and their measurement. Simple vibration instruments,
principles of seismic instruments and sound
measurement. Accelerometer, basic dynamic model,
dynamic range, resonant frequency, roll off rate, other
characteristics and applications
