Introduction

The OmniStar GX2 system is a complete line of headend fiber optic products designed to
transport video and data signals in Cable Access Television (CATV) systems and related
applications. The OmniStar GX2 system is flexible in its application and includes a series of
modules and options that you can select to accommodate system requirements.
This manual describes the Motorola GX2-RX200BX2 dual return path optical receiver module,
which is used in headend and hub applications (see Appendix B, Applications). The two
receivers in the GX2-RX200BX2 share a common digital controller, but have independent
outputs. Each receiver accepts either 1310 nm or 1550 nm modulated optical input and converts
it to RF in the passband from 5 MHz through 200 MHz.
Control for each receiver is done locally through the GX2-SDU100B Shelf Door Unit (SDU) or
the GX2-CM100B craft port interface. Remote monitoring and control can be accomplished
using a Network Management System.

Receiver Paths
Each receiver of the GX2-RX200BX2 accepts 1310 nm and 1550 nm wavelength optical inputs.
The optical detector of each receiver demodulates its respective optical input and provides an RF
output. Detector current is monitored by the embedded circuit and is used to determine the
received optical power.
Signal-path control is provided by the variable attenuator across a 20 dB range, as determined
by two operating modes: manual gain control (MGC) and OFF. You can select the operating
mode from the SDU front panel, local craft port, or Network Management System.
Directional couplers in the paths of both receivers tap off a 20 dB signal from the RF outputs
for RF TP1 and RF TP2. Individual connectors mounted on the back panel of the GX2-RX200BX2
(Figure 2-5, Key 3 and 4) provide an RF output for each receiver path.

Installation

With subsequent power-ups the status LED completes its power-on cycle, information stored in
the GX2-RX200BX2 NVM is recalled, and the unit defaults to the last stored operating settings
before power was disrupted.

Operational Optical Input Level Check

Use the SDU, local PC interface, or Network Management System to verify the received optical
power of each receiver is within the expected range.

Verify the RF Output (Gain) Signal

For proper return path level selections, see the Return Path Level Selection, Setup, and
Alignment Procedure Reference Guide.
Use a signal level meter or a spectrum analyzer to ensure there are RF signal outputs of the slot
occupied by the GX2-RX200BX2 receiver module. The outputs are located on the GX2-HSG*
rear panel. As an alternative, you can use the front panel test points to verify output levels.

S ec ti on 4

Operation
This section provides additional information necessary to properly use the GX2-RX200BX2. It
also provides a procedure to download new GX2-RX200BX2 firmware.

Operating Modes
Each receiver in the GX2-RX200BX2 module has two operating modes: manual gain control
(MGC), and off. You can control each receiver independently. To set the operating mode of a
GX2-RX200BX2 receiver, use the SDU, local PC port, or Network Management System.

Manual Gain Control

The manual gain control is used to increment or decrement RF outputs in 0.5 dB steps through
a 20 dB range by varying the internal PIN attenuators. The attenuator values are retained in
NVM and are restored after a power down/up or initialization sequence.

Off
In Off mode, the receiver RF output is minimal to enable removal of the signals from an
upstream receiver, transmitter, or set-top terminal. The off mode is also used to disable the
alarms from an inactive receiver.

Input Optical Power Level Meters

Each receiver has an internal optical power meter that determines the received optical power by
measuring the optical detector current. Meter readings are accessed through the SDU, local PC
port, or a Network Management System. Readings are reported in optical power (dBm) so you
do not have to perform any conversions.

RF Test Points
The front panel has two RF test-point connectors, one for each receiver. The top connector is for
the A path and the bottom connector is for the B path. The level at the test point is 20 dB below
the respective receiver RF output.

Operation

RF Output Level
The RF output level from the GX2-RX200BX2 depends on the type of laser that is used, the RF
input level to the laser, the GX2-RX200BX2 gain setting, and the optical link loss between the
laser and the GX2-RX200BX2.
Table 4-1 lists the various laser transmitter models and the suggested input level for each one:

Operation

4-3

Redundant Switch Control

You can use the GX2-RX200BX2 in conjunction with a GX2-RSW200B RF switch for redundant
return paths. The RF switch has two inputs, one from the primary GX2-RX200BX2 and the
other from the secondary GX2-RX200BX2. Normally, the RF switch passes the primary signal
and switches to the redundant signal when problems are detected in the primary receiver. Each
receiver of the GX2-RX200BX2 communicates with the GX2-RSW200B through a control signal
multiplexed onto the RF signal line. A change in the dc impedance of the output indicates a
state of change to the RF switch. Normal RF performance is not affected since the ac impedance
maintains 75 ohms.
When the received optical power of the primary receiver drops below a user selectable threshold,
the receiver signals the GX2-RSW200B to switch to the redundant path. Once the optical power
rises above the threshold by 0.8 dB for 1 second the GX2-RSW200B is signaled to switch back to
the primary input. (You can also set the GX2-RSW200B for non-revert mode which requires a
manual intervention to cause the reversion). For further details on GX2-RSW200B modes and
operation see the (GX2-RSW200B Installation and Operation Manual). You can set the
threshold to any optical input level within most of the receivers normal operating range. The
upper input power range is slightly restricted to keep threshold hysteresis from preventing
recovery.

Embedded Section
The microprocessor section contains memory to hold two separate banks of operating firmware:
factory code and download code. Factory code is programmed into the module at the factory and
is read-only. Download code can be changed or updated by downloading new firmware as
described below.
The microprocessor internal memory also stores module information and calibration data that is
programmed at the factory.
The microprocessor contains digital-to-analog (D/A) and analog-to-digital (A/D) converters that
are used to control and monitor module operation. The module communicates to the
GX2-CM100B control module through the GX2-HSG* backplane.

Boot Operation
When the module is powered on or reset, the microprocessor boots up and begins operating. The
microprocessor determines which operating firmware bank to use factory code or download
code. It then verifies the integrity of the selected bank code by performing a cyclic redundancy
check (CRC). If the CRC indicates the firmware is error free, the microprocessor begins
operation using that firmware code.
During the boot up, the front-panel receiver alarm STATUS LED is green and blinks on and off.
After the boot up completes successfully the front-panel LED enters an initialization sequence.
If the CRC indicates errors in the firmware, the microprocessor checks to ensure that the other
bank contains valid firmware. The microprocessor verifies the CRC of the code in the other bank
and, if error free, begins operating with that firmware.
If an error occurs during the boot up, the STATUS LED illuminates red and an alarm message
indicating which bank failed is sent to the Network Management System.

GX2-RX200BX2 Installation and Operation Manual

4-4

Operation

If both banks fail the CRC test, the microprocessor stops operating and the receiver STATUS LED
blinks red to indicate that the boot up failed. The module continues to pass signal without
microprocessor control.

Downloading New Firmware

The GX2-RX200BX2 can store up to two sets of firmware programs which you can download
through the Network Management System. When the download is complete, the
GX2-RX200BX2 uses the new firmware for each subsequent boot up. You also have the option of
selecting and using any stored set of firmware code at each boot up.
The Network Management System enables you to view the following information about the
firmware programs stored in the GX2-RX200BX2:
!

Firmware revision level

Firmware code CRC

Which set of firmware will run at the next boot up

You have the option of selecting a specific module or all modules of the target type for download.
After you select all of the options, you can initiate the download.
To download firmware, the Network Management System must be running and communicating
with the GX2-CM100B. The GX2-CM100B and the Network Management System perform the
following tasks to download the new firmware:
!

The Network Management System reads the firmware download file you selected and
verifies the program code CRC. The software reads the target module type and firmware
revision to be downloaded from the file and displays this information for your verification.

The Network Management System transfers the download firmware and selected options to
the GX2-CM100B. The GX2-CM100B verifies that the firmware was transferred correctly
and that the selected options are valid. If the GX2-CM100B detects any errors it responds
with an error message to the Network Management System. From this point on, the
firmware download is handled exclusively by the GX2-CM100B.

Following firmware verification, the GX2-CM100B begins the firmware download to the
target modules. It monitors the programming of new firmware and reports any errors. It
also sends a message informing the Network Management System that the firmware
download was successful.

The GX2-CM100B is now ready to reset the GX2-RX200BX2 to run the new firmware
program. You can determine whether the reboot is immediate or occurs at a later time
following the issuance of a reset command. This option enables you to choose between
immediate, delayed, or scheduled reboots.

The GX2-RX200BX2 continues to operate normally during a firmware download which is

transparent to you and the Network Management System.
Refer to the (GX2-CM100B Control Module Installation and Operation Manual) and the
(Network Management System Instruction Manual) for additional information regarding the
downloading of firmware.

Network Management
The receiver module monitors selected parameters during operation and compares the
measurements to a table stored in memory. This table defines high and low limits, as well as,
STATUS LED indication if a fault occurs. When a measurement exceeds the alarm limit, the
appropriate status LED is illuminated and the fault is reported to the control module. The SDU,
local PC interface, or Network Management System can be used to further isolate the fault
condition.
