QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS

1. Why is it important to know the individuals pace factor?

Answer: It is important to know your pace factor because when you are in
circumstances wherein you have no measuring instruments to use, your pace
factor can be used as an alternative.
2. Name the three most important pointers that an individual must remember to
follow in order to make his/her approximation of the distance of an unknown
course to be as accurate as possible.
Answer:
a. To pace a distance, it is necessary to first determine the length of ones pace.
b. It is important to walk naturally when trying to calibrate ones pace and in
pacing distances.
c. It is advisable to do pacing at least five or more trials in order to determine the
average number of paces.
3. A student tries to measure the perimeter of a small park of his community by
pacing around the area for three consecutive times. The number of paces was
tallied at 535, 543 and 539, respectively, for each trial. If the students pace factor
is 0.74 m/pace, determine the actual perimeter of the land.
Answer:
MEAN =

535+543+ 539
3

MEAN = 539 paces

Actual Perimeter = Mean X Pace Factor
Actual Perimeter = 539 paces X 0.74 m/pace
Actual Perimeter = 398.86 m
4. Every morning Joy walks to school from her boarding house and takes only a
single route. For five consecutive days, she tries to count the number of paces
she makes/ Monday mornings number of paces made by Joy listed as 345
paces. On Tuesday, 353 paces; Wednesday, 358 paces; Thursday, 348 paces
and lastly, on Friday, 355 paces. That Friday afternoon, a surveyor from City
Engineers Office who is tasked to lay out a new drainage piping system,

measure the exact route she took and found out that the taped distance is 275 m.
What is Joys pace factor?
Answer:
MEAN =

345+ 353+ 358+348+355

5

MEAN = 351.8 paces

Pace Factor =

275 m
351.8

Pace Factor = 0.78 m/ pace

5. The table shown below was taken from Jacks notes when he tried to determine
the perimeter of his newly acquired agricultural piece of land. Knowing that his
pace factor is 0.81, determine the perimeter of his lot. Complete the table:

Answer:
PERIMETER = Paced distance of AB + BC + CD + DE + EF + FA
PERIMTER = 101.45 + 68.85 + 64.40 + 107.73 + 149.85 + 90.72
PERIMETER = 583 m
6. The length of the basketball court from MITs Gym was paced by a CE Student
whose pace factor is 0.78. How many paces accurate to of a pace do you think
did the student make?

DISCUSSION
For the first fieldwork which is knowing an individuals pace factor, you will be
able to have a most convenient way in measuring the distance of one
place
to
another, when certain emergencies arouses or being experience because not all the
time you are bringing always your measuring tools.
We are asked to measure your own pace with first knowing the length of the
distance and the other one is that not knowing the distance you are pacing and be able
to observe their differences. For the first part, a 50m distance was designated by our
professor on a level ground, he used a chalk to mark the starting and ending points and
the two range poles serve as the basis where to end. After that, we must walk from the
starting point to the end point for five times. And then, we are asked to count the
number of our paces each trial to help us determine our pace factor. After the 5 trials,
we listed down the number of our paces each trial and we computed our pace factor.
For the second part of the fieldwork, it is also the same with the first part but this
time, we dont know that length of distance were about to walk. After 5 trials, we listed
down also the number of paces for each trial and we computed our pace factor.
