Isotope
Ar 38Ar 40Ar
% Composition 0.34 0.07 99.59

Answer: 39.985 amu

2. Calculate the mass of the following substances:
(a) 0.45 mol of aluminium

Answer: 12.15g
(b) 2.63 x 1024 atoms of oxygen

Answer: 70.43g
(c) 2.30 x 1022 molecules of carbon dioxide

Answer: 1.68g
3. 9.25 moles of potassium chloride and 8.75 moles of chromium(III) chloride react
according to the following equation:
2 KCl

(aq)

+ 2 CrCl3 (aq) 7 H2O

(l)

+ 3 Cl2 (g)

(a) Find the limiting reactant.

Answer: CrCl3 is the limiting reactant.

(b) Find the moles of chlorine gas formed.

Answer: 13.1 moles

(c) Find the moles of reagent in excess.

Answer: 0.50 moles

4. Consider the reaction of C6H6 + Br2

C6H5Br + HBr

(a) What is the theoretical yield of C6H5Br if 42.1 g of C6H6 react with 73.0 g of Br2?

Answer: 71.6 g C6H5Br

(b) If the actual yield of C6H5Br is 63.6 g, what is the percent yield?

Answer: 88.8%
5. Use the following reaction: C4H9OH + NaBr + H2SO4
C4H9Br + NaHSO4 + H2O
If 15.0 g of C4H9OH react with 22.4 g of NaBr and 32.7 g of H2SO4 to yield 17.1 g of
C4H9Br, what is the percent yield of this reaction?

Answer: 61.6%

6. Sulphuric acid, H2SO4 dissociates into H+ ions and SO42- ions.

(a) Calculate the bond order of SO42- ion.

Bond order = 6/4 = 2

(b) Compare the bond length and bond strength between SO42- ion and SO3 molecule.

Bond order of SO3 = 4/3

Bond order: SO42- > SO3
Bond length is inversely proportional to bond order, thus bond length: SO42- < SO3.
Bond strength: SO42- > SO3
7. Determine the empirical formula of a compound containing 63.50% silver, 8.25%
nitrogen, and the remainder oxygen.

Answer: AgNO3
8. A 2.65 g sample of a salmon-colored powder contains 0.70 g of chromium, 0.65 g of
sulfur, and 1.30 g of oxygen. The molar mass is 392.2. What is the molecular formula of
the compound?

Answer: Cr2S3O12 or Cr(SO4)3

9. A solution of 12.9g of fructose, C6H12O6 , in 31.0g of water. Given the density of water
is 1.00 gmL-1.
(a) What is the molality of the solution?

Answer: 2.31m
(b) Determine the weight to volume (% w/v) and weight (% w/w) percentage
composition of fructose in the water.

Answer: 41.61% w/v and 41.61% w/w

10. Nitrogen oxide, NO2, dissolves in water to form nitric acid, HNO3. Draw the Lewis
structure of NO2 molecule and NO3- ion. Calculate the formal charge for each atom.

Answer: *Include any possible resonance. Calculate the formal charge accordingly.

11. Name the type of intermolecular forces formed between a polar molecule and a non
nonpolar molecule. Briefly describe how the forces forms by using an example.

Answer: Permanent dipole induced dipole attraction.

A polar HCl molecule carries partial positive at H side and partial negative charges at Cl
side. Random movement of electron in a non-polar Ar atom creates an induced
dipole.. One side of Ar atom with higher electron density carries an induced partial
negative charge, whereas the side with lower electron density carries an induced partial
p
positive charge. Attraction forces formed between partial negative Cl side of HCl
molecule and induced partial positive side of Ar atom.
12. Draw the Lewis dot structure for each of the following polyatomic ions:
(a) PO43-

(b) CO32-

(c) PO33-

(d) ClO2-
