CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS A GAME?

Games have been a part of human experience for more than 4,000
years ago.

A game is defined by 1) interactive challenges, 2) rules, and 3)


attainable goals.

EXAMPLE

Challenge: Move pieces across the board


Rules: Movement of the pieces
Goal: Capture the opponents king

WHAT IS VIDEO GAME?

Originally referred to a specific type of device - a computer


system that creates a void display signal for television.

Computer games which are played only on the personal


computer (not consoles, mobile phones, or arcade devices)

Video games are controlled by computer programs through user


interaction and audiovisual immersion.

It allows players to respond to challenge situation in fantasy words.

PLAYER MODE

Single-player model is for a single participants. The player


competes against the program.

Cooperative multiplayer also known as co-op, allow two or


more players to work in tandem against the program. Example,
each gamer sees the other participants on his or her screen.

Adversarial multiplayer allows two or more players to


compete against once another. Example, it can take the form of
teams battling against one another.
