weeks will be appearances by sports celebrities (the Phillie Phanatic
returns on August 11) and entertainment (fireworks on August 1).

Field, park for a buck, buy a cheap hot dog and
soda, bring the family, see the memorabilia, root
or just watch. Its called the Bridgeton Invitational
Tournament and, since its good, this is the 49th annual.
Unique speed up rules set a good pace for the ball
gamesseven innings in under two hours.
You dont even have to be a baseball person. Theres
entertainment, contests, a big 50-50 drawing every
night, noted guests, and, of course, fireworks (sometimes on the diamond, sometimes off ).
Twelve spirited semi-pro teams make up the field.
Teams like Gildeas Raiders of Wilmington have played
in this tournament for decades, while those like the
Baltimore Brew are making their first trip (and its 100
miles each way.)
Teams and players come from the Salem County
League, Atlantic County Baseball League, Tri-County
League, N.J Independent Baseball League, and beyond.
This years edition of the classic confrontations opens
Friday and runs through the final game on August 17.
Most of the games in the tournament will be broadcast live on WSNJ 1240 and streamed worldwide at
snjtoday.com; five of them will be televised on a delayed
basis on SNJ Today/Channel 22 on Comcast Cable (see
page 6 for schedule). Announcing the games will be Coach
Bob Hutchings, Mickey Brandt and Justin Epifanio.

between neighbors and law enforcement while
bringing back a true sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring police and
neighbors together under positive circumstances.
Neighborhoods across the nationVineland
includedhost block parties, festivals, parades,
cookouts and other various community events with
safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events,
visits from emergency personnel and exhibits.
Vineland has hosted a National Night Out
since 2007. This years event will be held
Tuesday, August 4 at Vineland High School
South (2880 E. Chestnut Avenue) from 5 p.m.
until after a fireworks display.
In addition to the food, fun, and fireworks,
musical entertainment will be provided by 80s
rock band Arsenal as well as Zoe, smooth jazz.
The Vineland event draws thousands of people
each year, and local businesses have supported by
donating food, services, and finances, even to the
point where there is no cost to Vineland taxpayers.

Forward
Gabrielle Staropoli was faced with a
decision as an 8th grader at Edgarton
Christian Academy that would change the
life of a Newfield resident. In September
2014, at the monthly prayer service,
Gabrielle was handed an envelope containing $40 and challenged by her Principal
Dr. Mary Alimenti and Pastor John
Redkoles of The United Methodist Church,
Newfield to go out and Pay it Forward.
Gabby had several months to decide
who she would help and how she would
complete her 8th grade requirement. She
described her recipient, Dishon Tolan, as
a strong and courageous woman whose
life changed forever while taking a motorcycle ride for a cup of coffee. Tolan was
involved in a horrific accident that would
require 10 surgeries including amputation. Gabby raised over $200 for Dishon
and invited her to Edgarton for the presentation of the Pay it Forward project.

exactly why the face of the actual school and Superintendent Dr. Dina Elliott display
the schools new logo.
is also changing. The Cumberland
County Board of Vocational Education and the Administrators of the Cumberland
County Technical Education Center recently unveiled the schools new logo, which
they said better reflects the schools recently revised mission and vision.
Our technical education center has educated a young and adult student population since 1969, but next fall when our new high school doors open, the entire
concept of what the region has come to know as CCTEC will be totally reinvented,
Vocational Board President Dan Vivarelli explains. We feel a new identity is in
order so the school can be recognized for the exceptional and innovative education options we are going to offer.
The schools new logo includes traditional elements as well as an icon that,
according to CCTEC Superintendent Dr. Dina Elliott, demonstrates the innovative
learning experiences that all levels of the schools teaching staff are currently planning for next September. The new brand for the school will be incorporated into all
newly developed school print and digital communications including its website.
The opening of the new Cumberland County Technical Education Center will
bring workforce development in our County to a whole new level, Dr. Elliott
explained. Dual credit programs will be offered by the school so that our high
school students can now earn college credits with more than seven universities
and colleges while attending high school.
Students entering high school in fall of 2016 can consider a variety of programs leading directly to college credits to be offered by CCTEC. Programs of
study include: Allied Health; Communications and Graphic Design; Engineering
and Manufacturing; Information Technology and Business; and, Law Enforcement
and Homeland Security. Career and technical education programs leading directly to the workplace or to college include: Allied Health; Automotive Technology;
Construction Trades; Cosmetology; and Culinary Arts.
Currently under construction on College Drive in Millville, the new high school
is clearly visible to Route 55 travelers. The New Jersey Department of
Educations landmark contribution of $48 million enabled the County to break
ground last fall for the 200,000 square foot building project which is being managed by the Cumberland County Improvement Authority.
Information sessions that will be required for interested applicants will be held
beginning in September at Cumberland County Colleges Luciano Conference
Center. For the latest information about the new school and the application

About the School:
The Cumberland County Technical Education Center provides career and technical education curriculum options to county high school students and adults. Next
September, the school will transition from its current location in Bridgeton to a
200,000 square foot facility now under construction at 3400 College Drive in
Millville, located adjacent to the campus of Cumberland County College.

Hospice Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are a significant part of any
hospice organization. They provide care
and support services to patients, their
caregivers and office staff. Inspira Home
Care and Hospice is looking for individuals
who are compassionate, reliable and nonjudgmentalindividuals willing to donate
a couple of hours each month toward making a positive difference in the lives of
patients, their families and caregivers
and/or assisting our office staff with clerical duties.
Volunteers do need to be educated
about hospice, as a volunteer training class

will be held this summer. Six classes in
total will be held at Inspira Home Care and
Hospice located at 1138 E. Chestnut Avenue
#3B, Vineland.
Classes cover the history and philosophy of hospice, physical aspects of disease
and pain management, communication
skills, psychological responses to death and

The U.S. Department of Homeland

Security's Federal Emergency Management
Agency announced that federal disaster aid
has been made available to the State of
New Jersey to supplement state and local
recovery efforts in the area affected by a
severe storm on June 23, 2015.
The President's action makes federal
funding available to state and eligible local
governments and certain private nonprofit
organizations on a cost-sharing basis for
emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe
storm in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, and
Gloucester counties.
Federal funding is available on a costsharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.
Seamus K. Leary has been named as the
Federal Coordinating Officer for federal
recovery operations in the affected area.
Leary said additional designations may be
made at a later date if requested by the
state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
Following is a summary of key federal
disaster aid programs that can be made
available as needed and warranted under
President Obama's disaster declaration
issued for the State of New Jersey.
Assistance for the State and Affected
Local Governments Can Include as Required:
Payment of not less than 75 percent of

the eligible costs for emergency protective
measures taken to save lives and protect
property and public health. Emergency
protective measures assistance is available
to state and eligible local governments on a
cost-sharing basis. (Source: FEMA funded,
state administered.)
Payment of not less than 75 percent of
the eligible costs for repairing or replacing
damaged public facilities, such as roads,
bridges, utilities, buildings, schools, recreational areas and similar publicly owned
property, as well as certain private nonprofit organizations engaged in community

Payment of not more than 75 percent
of the approved costs for hazard mitigation
projects undertaken by state and local governments to prevent or reduce long-term
risk to life and property from natural or

series of federal/state applicant briefings
with locations to be announced in the
affected area by recovery officials.
Approved public repair projects are paid
through the state from funding provided

officials has announced that a dog and cat
canvassing program will begin on or about
August 3. The canvassers will be going door
to door throughout the city as part of the
census program and will be carrying the
proper City of Vineland credentials to identify themselves. New Jersey regulations
require municipalities to conduct a canvass
of all dogs owned, or kept harbored within
their boundaries, at least once every two
years. Municipalities, however, may opt to
conduct the canvass annually. The
Vineland Municipal Code further requires
that cats be included as well.
All dogs and cats in the city over the
age of seven months, or who possess a set
of permanent teeth, are required to be
licensed on an annual basis, said City of
Vineland Health Officer Robert Dickinson.
The annual due date for obtaining your
pets license is March 31st of each year.
Owners found to be in violation of the ordinance will be issued a summons to appear
in court.
Individuals who are issued a summons
for having an unlicensed dog or cat will be
required to obtain the required license. If
you wish to challenge the summons, you
will be required to appear in court on the
date and time indicated on the summons.
If you do not wish to challenge the summons, you may bring your summons and
proof of licensing to the court and pay the
appropriate fine at the window. According

Just to let you know Kristen, we think of you often.
Sometimes its at Dolphin Swim practice,
sometimes in the quiet of the night. Many of us
have so many fond memories of you and the mark
you left in our hearts and minds. The new
swimmers were not around to meet and swim
with you but we keep your memory alive by
sharing how much you meant to us. Almost 100
swimmers participated in this years MILE SWIM in your honor and Aarons! Their

The Cumberland County 4-H Program

offers a series of low cost summer enrichment programs for youth in kindergarten
through one year out of high school.
Designed to engage youth in hands-on
projects, make new friends and develop
lifeskills, the 2015 summer enrichment program includes half day programs in art,
cooking, science, gardening, agriculture
and animal science offerings.
4-H Program Assistant Cheryl
McCormick leads the Kids in the Kitchen 4H summer program. Parents enjoyed a complete lunch prepared and served by the
youth at the conclusion of the three day
program. McCormick encourages the kids
to get hands-on in the kitchen and learn
from their experiences. Home Horticultural
Program Assistant Pamela Burton instructed the participants in creating fresh flower
centerpieces for the luncheon.

According to Vineland officials, there
are more than 70,000 domestic animal
bites in New Jersey every year, and we are
much more likely to be exposed to rabies
through contact with our pets than through
contact with wildlife. Studies have indicated that when 60 to 70 percent of the dog
and cat populations are vaccinated, they act
as an effective buffer between rabid
wildlife and humans.
We track rabies vaccinations through
licensing, Dickenson continued. Our current estimate is that only 24 percent of the
owned dogs and 6 percent of the owned
cats are licensed in Vineland. These percentages offer inadequate protection.
The fee for spayed or neutered pets is
$10 per animal/per year. The fee for pets
not spayed or neutered is $18 per animal/
per year. For applications received after
March 31, the fees increase to $13 and $21
per animal/per year. Proof of a rabies vaccination valid through October 31 of the
licensing year is also required. If it expires
prior to that date, the animal must receive a
rabies booster before a license is issued.
Owners of licensed animals entering
Vineland from another state must apply for
a Vineland license within 90 days, and unlicensed animals entering Vineland from
another state must apply for a Vineland
license within 10 days.
Applications for initial licenses are available at the Department of Licenses and
Inspections, or online at www.vineland
city.org. Applications may be submitted in
person or by mail, and must be accompanied by the appropriate fee and documentation. If application is submitted by mail,
documents will be returned to you when
the license is mailed (but make copies of all
documents before mailing them.)

ain Street Vineland has gotten a double shot of great

news, and the timing couldnt be better! I recently saw
an opportunity to apply for Main Street
New Jerseys Branding & Digital Design
Service Grant. This would give us a whole
host of services for free that would help
develop a target market and branding
strategy. Well, Im proud to say that, not
only did we get the grant, but thatbased
on our scoringwe were the first awardee!
What does this mean? It means that,
through a yearlong process, a nationally
recognized consulting firm hired by Main
Street New Jersey will work with us (with
whom Ive already set the ball rolling with
a preliminary meeting and downtown
tour!)analyzing our strengths and weaknesses and offering onsite visioning sessions, surveys, webinars, and the like.
Theyll help us determine a new brand to
move us into the future. This will include
a new logo, a new comprehensive website,
broadened social media presence, business cards, and a host of other tools.
If we were to bid all these services out
to contractors, the cost would be more
than $30,000. Because of this grant, were
getting this wonderful package of services
for free! You cant beat free!
Now, I know that weve been down this
road before with surveys, brands, logos,
strategic plansboth for downtown and
the entire City of Vinelandover the
years. Ive seen many of those documents
and read them. Many of them were tools
of their time and dont apply to todays situation. Some of the target groups sought
in the earlier surveys dont apply to what
needs to be done now.
Whats going to make the big difference
is the success of our new Millennial
Advisory Board. The purpose of the Board,
as Ive stated in past columns, is to be part

of an aggressive plan to help reshape our
downtown area and to create new business
opportunities there for the millennial generation. The Gen X and Gen Y folks on the
board will work in tandem with babyboomers and members of other generational groups to work toward this goal.
Well, that first inaugural meeting was
an overwhelming success. The meeting
room in our office was filled with young
people brimming with enthusiasm, exciting ideas, and, most importantly, an eagerness to be part of a plan to implement
them. To be part of the permanent board,
those who expressed an interest had to fill
out an application to show their seriousness about following through.
The Board was to consist of 12 members who would elect their own chairperson and arrange for their own meetings.
The end result of this is that Ive received
so many applications from top-notch candidates that Im expanding the board to 16
to accommodate all this great talent. With
this board feeding new talent into our four
standing teams and working with our
interns, I see a great future for us.
Just like one storm can combine with
another stormfeeding strength and moistureto create a super-storm, I see the
results of the Branding & Digital Design
Service Grant given added strength and
impetus by the work of our Millennial
Advisory Board to create the perfect conditions for the paradigm shift needed to
make the difference in our downtown and

Opening of
Infamous Trial
Charles K. Landis murder trial drew local crowds as
well as the national press to the Bridgeton Courthouse.
were missing from the courtroom: Brewster,

who was reportedly sick, and Landis. Just
as the trial was about to proceed after the
completion of some minor business, it was
also discovered that three witnesses for the
prosecution were missing and Hoagland
refused to continue without them. Reed
demanded that they be procured and penalized immediately and declared a recess
until 3 p.m. Once adjourned, the court discovered that the reason for the missing witnesses absence had been a delayed train
and that they would arrive shortly.
When the trial resumed at 3 oclock,
Landis was in the courtroom, accompanied
by his sister Matilda. The afternoon session
focused on assembling a jury. The task
would take two-and-a-half hours, with the
defense challenging 20 prospective jurors
and the prosecution 10. In the end, four
were set aside or excused. Those selected
for the trial were George W. Dummitt,
Thomas Ludlam and Francis Reeves from
Millville, David O. Frazeur and Joseph M.
Ware from Bridgeton, Benjamin F. McKeag
and Jonathan Cox from Maurice River
Township, Dallas L. Compton from
Commercial Township, Joseph A. Minch
from Hopewell Township, Elmer Biddle
from Deerfield Township and Jacob
Richman and jury foreman Thomas Proud
from Vineland.
The inclusion of Proud and Ludlam are
curiosities that did not escape the attention
of a Philadelphia reporter present at the
trial who commented that two circumstances connected with the drawing were
noticeable to close observers, and give every
reason to believe that Landis has at least
two men on the jury who favor him. There
was an error in the prosecutions understanding of the procedures that accompany
the swearing in of jurors that led to Prouds
inclusion. The prosecutions failure to challenge Ludlam placed him aboard, and the
defense team surely earned a victory on the
first day of the proceedings.
After the grueling selection process was
completed and the jury established, it was
decided that opening arguments would
commence the following morning when
court resumed. At 5:30 p.m., the court officially adjourned on the first day of Landis
infamous trial. I

was one of the most highly
anticipated events of
Cumberland County in the 19th
century. It drew local crowds as well as the
national press to the Bridgeton Courthouse
for several weeks of unexpected disclosures and an ultimate censuring of the
founder of Vineland who, for some, had
finally gone too far in abusing the power he
wielded and, for others, had become the
hapless victim of the pettiness of smalltown politics. But for those who arrived on
opening day, the stage was still being set
and the events played out more like a dress
rehearsal than the full-fledged production
that would soon be underway.
The trial was set to begin on Tuesday
January 11, 1876, at 10 a.m. Hours before
the start time, a huge crowd had gathered
outside the courthouse hoping to gain
entrance to the proceedings. Those in
attendance far outnumbered the capacity
of the facilitys upper level seating, so it was
necessary to provide admission tickets on a
first-come-first-serve basis. At 10 oclock,
the process of handing out these admission
cards began, and those lucky enough to
receive one were then directed to the
upper level where they turned in their card
for a seat. It only took a few minutes for the
room to fill completely, leaving the vast
majority of the crowd without an opportunity to witness the trial that day.
While the constables tended to the
crowds milling about outside, several of the
key players in this courtroom drama were
arriving in Bridgeton. Landis had assembled
an impressive team of lawyers from both
New Jersey and Philadelphia. He selected
Philadelphian Benjamin Harris Brewster as
well as Vineland counsels William House
and E. M. Turner, Bridgeton attorneys Col.
William E. Potter and Charles E. Sheppard
and Elizabeth resident and ex-Chancellor
Benjamin Williamson. Starting that day,
they would face two worthy opponents in
the trials prosecutors, District Attorney
James R. Hoagland and Attorney General
Jacob Vanatta. The presiding Judge would
be Alfred Reed.
The first day of the trial was underway
an hour later than scheduled. It was immediately noted that two of the key players

Bay Atlantic Symphony Offers $25 Summer Concerts

The Bay Atlantic Symphony has
received a $35,000 grant through the
PNC Arts Alive initiative to fund affordable seating at its three-concert
Classical Borgata summer concert
series at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in
Atlantic City, as well as the orchestras
season opening Rodgers &
Hammerstein Celebration! spectacular
gala concert, also at Borgata.
The grant allows the Symphony to
subsidize the cost of tickets for the
Borgata Classical series, which runs
through August 30 at $25 per ticket
for each concert. Tickets for the Rodgers & Hammerstein Celebration! gala,
which will be on September 19, will be $65 and $50.
The Borgata Classical seriesall on Sundays at 5 p.m.began on July 19.
Renowned pianist Terrence Wilson, pictured, returns to Bay Atlantic
Symphony audiences on Sunday, August 2 performing Chopins lyrical Piano
Concerto No. 1 followed by Beethovens familiar, powerful Symphony No. 5. The
series will conclude on August 30 with Bay Atlantic Symphony principal hornist
Jonathan Clark performing Mozarts Horn Concerto No. 2 in a concert that will
also include the composers overtures to Don Giovanni and The Marriage of
Figaro, as well as Haydns Symphony No. 104, London.
The Rodgers & Hammerstein Celebration! gala will feature Broadway stars
Sean McLaughlin and Teri Dale Hansen in favorite selections from the beloved
musicals of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein III. The host for the show
will be Hammersteins son, Andy Oscar Hammerstein III.
Open Auditions for

Hairspray
The Broadway musical, Hairspray
is coming to the Cumberland County
College stage November 19-22. Open
auditions will take place on Monday,
August 24 beginning at 4 p.m.
Its 1962 in Baltimore, Maryland
and Tracy Turnblad, an overweight
high school student has one dream:
to appear on her favorite TV program, The Corny Collins Show, a
popular teen dance program. When
Tracy wins a spot on the show, she
is quickly transformed into a teen
celebrity and uses her newfound
influence to advocate for racial integration on the television show.
Tony Award-winning Hairspray
continues to be one of the most
widely produced musicals today, not
only because of its wit and charm,
but also because of the message of
acceptance and progress that it portrays.
Broadway veteran and Perry Award
winner, Deborah Bradshaw (Director),
Roz Metcalf (Musical Director), and
Jill Graves (Choreographer) will head
the production.
Those auditioning will be asked to
