The Great Gatsby 2013 film version differed greatly from F. Scott Fitzgeralds novel.

Listed below you will find some differences that I discovered while watching the movie.
Discuss 3 differences in- depth and provide evidence to your statements.
I have provided guidelines, but feel free to discuss additional thoughts/feelings.
1. The movie begins with Nick talking to a psychiatrist. Discuss how this affects
your point of view on Nick. Discuss how it differs from the books portrayal of
his character. Does he seem more or less credible as a narrator in the movie or the
book?
2. In the movie, we know that Nick is writing this book while it is only alluded to
in the novel. Does this affect your interpretation of Nicks details and story as a
whole? Do the flashes to Nick writing the book affect your viewing?
3. Daisy, Jordan, and Toms characters (personality wise) are not portrayed as they
were in the book. Discuss the major differences seen in these characters in the
movie. Why did the director portray them as such? Does this affect or drive the
movies plot?
4. Nick and Jordan never really develop a relationship in the movie. Why do you
think their relationship was portrayed as such in the movie? Does this affect the
plot in any way? Think about the request Jordan has of Nick.
5. Gatsby makes a grand entrance in the movie. How does this differ from the
book? Does this, in turn, make Nicks view of Gatsby differ than the book? Does
the movie spark their relationship too soon or too late? Do they seem to have
the same relationship throughout the movie as they did in the book?
6. Racism and ant- Semitism (hatred of Jews) is not apparent in the movie like it is
in the book. How does this affect the plot and the portrayal of certain characters?
Why do you think an Indian actor was used to portray the Jewish Meyer
Wolfsheim rather than a Jewish actor? (Think about the way that Fitzgerald
describes the Wolfsheim in the book). Why do you think Toms Rise of the
Colored Empires conversation was removed? Does either of these removals
affect the movies plot?
7. Gatsby dies thinking he won Daisy over in the movie; whereas, in the book, it
was much more subtle. Why do you think the director did this for the movie?
How does it affect you as a viewer? Were you given more hope in the movie than
the book? Explain.

8. The novel represents the 1920s indisputably; however, the movie does not serve
justice to the time period. It incorporates many modern themes and many
costumes. Discuss why the director may have done this and how it affected you
as someone who has read the novel. Do you think it was necessary to
modernize the film, or could the director have kept to the 1920s as Fitzgerald
did? What does the movie gain or lose in its modern version? Did the
modernization seem overwhelming or was it done tastefully?
