Bridgeport High School ju-
nior T.J. Henry, 17, dropped a
piece of Mentos candy into a
bottle of soda and watched as
the drink shot out to a height
of almost 10 feet, like a gey-
ser.
He ran away before he
could get “sploshed.”
Henry and about 500 other
Bridgeport High students
gathered outside the school
before the lunch hour Tues-
day to drop the candy into al-
most 600 bottles of soda.
Rosalinda Scott, the sci-
ence teacher who helped co-
ordinate the event, said the
school holds an assembly
every year to motivate stu-
dents to perform better on
the TAKS test.
“Everything was supposed
to go off at the same time,
but some students got a little
anxious,” Scott said.
Senior Jesse Grimes, 18,
brought a bottle of soda and
wasn’t disappointed.
Some of the soda was still
left in the bottle.
“I’m going to drink the
rest of it during government
class,” Grimes said.

Dear Neil: My hibiscus
plants came back last year,
but they were 9 feet tall.
They’re coming back this
year, and I don’t want them
to get so lanky. Can they be
pruned, and, if so, by how
much?
It would really help to
know what type of hibiscus
you have. There are many,
and 9 feet isn’t especially
tall for many of them. You
wouldn’t be able to prune
hardy hibiscus (rose mal-
lows) easily, as they produce
unbranched shoots. Confed-
erate rose and Texas star
hibiscus are two other very
strong growers. All hibis-
cus need to be in full sun.
If yours is in a good bit of
shade, that might account
for its lankiness. Moving it
late next winter would be
the solution. Pruning prob-
ably won’t be.
Dear Neil: Some 17 years
ago my wife transplanted
bluebonnets onto a slope
near our house. Now, after
this spring, they have com-
pletely disappeared. I plant-
ed ryegrass on that slope 10
or 12 years ago to give some
winter food to the deer. Could
that have been the problem?
If so, how do I kill the rye
without harming the blue-
bonnets?
In nature, bluebonnets
grow in rather poor soils and
challenging conditions. They
do not compete at all well
with vigorous grasses. Your
best bet would be to find a
space where the rye could
be killed with a glyphosate
and where you could rototill
the soil gently to a depth of
an inch or two before sowing
acid-treated seeds in late
August or September.

gram? I was recently diag-
nosed with pre-diabetes and
need to take better care of my-
self but I hate to exercise. Any
suggestions?

Dear Sedentary,
More than 20 years of re-
search has shown that walk-
ing may be the perfect exer-
cise to improve your health. It
burns calories (about 100 for
every mile you walk), builds
endurance, enhances muscle
tone and flexibility, strength-
ens bones and doesn’t pound
your joints. It also helps pre-
vent diabetes, heart disease,
stroke, high blood pressure,
arthritis, Alzheimer’s, de-
pression and more. Here’s
what you should know.
Get in Step
Walking is not only good
sire. Here are some tips to
help you get in step:
■ Getting started (see

Start out slow if you need to.
For many people this means
head out the door, walk for 10
minutes and walk back. Do it
every day for a week. If that
seems easy, add five minutes
to your walks next week and
keep adding five minutes un-
til you are walking as long as
you desire. It’s also a smart
idea to start and finish your
walk with a few simple warm
up and cool down stretches.
Stretching will make you feel
better and help prevent inju-
ry. (Note: If you have health
concerns, talk with your doc-
tor before starting a walking
program.)
■ How often and how long:
Any walking is better than
none, but most fitness ex-
perts recommend walking

Getting older doesn’t have to mean
suffering from depression. Many peo-
ple find their senior years full of ad-
venture, excitement and a variety of
joyful activities.
But all of us, especially as we age,
will still experience sadness. Changes
brought on by aging, such as reduced
physical abilities, increasing health is-
sues, or simply being more isolated, can
all increase worry and sad feelings.
A common cause of sadness, espe-
cially as we age, is the loss of someone
dear to us, whether a spouse, a rela-
tive or a close friend. The grief we ex-
perience over such a loss is actually a
natural, healthy response that helps
us face the future.

always an easy condition to recognize.
There’s no clear timetable for how long
grief should endure. For some people
there may be a sad week or two, and
for others it might take months to ac-

the grief seems to be unrelenting, re-
fusing to diminish with the passage of
time.
It’s also telling when all signs of joy
in the person’s life seem to be gone.

and can’t appreciate the beautiful
things around them, such as a pretty

There is so much going
on in the outdoors this time
of year that I thought we
would do a ‘smorgasbord’
column this week to help
you decide the activity that
best suits your schedule and
interests. We’ll cover several
activities and give you con-
tacts for folks that can help
put you in the action.
Float a river
John Bryan is in charge
of the hunting and fishing
on the Holt River Ranch
in Palo Pinto County. John
guides anglers on several
miles of the Brazos River
that join the ranch. Fishing
has been excellent for native
black bass, spotted bass and
catfish. This is the Post Oak
Bend area of the Brazos and
the scenery is breathtaking
with sheer rock cliffs and
secluded valleys. It’s a great
place to float in a canoe or
small boat but access to the
river is limited. Paddlers
that wish to do self-guided
float trips should study
maps of the section of river
they plan to float and have
pre-determined spots to put
in and take out. On rivers
such as the Brazos, it’s often
necessary to float several
miles to highways where ac-
cess to the waterway is al-

dough, a floater, weights and
a long shank bream hook is
all it takes to introduce a kid
to fishing. Finding nesting
bream is easy. Look for oval
shaped, fanned out areas in
water two to four feet deep.
Find a spot where bream are
nesting and it’s common to
catch several from the same
area. The trick is to stay a
long cast away from the fish,
cast past them, then crank
the bait up to their nest-
ing area. Bream, although
small, are excellent eating.

Turkey season still

Many hunters target gob-
blers during the first couple
weeks of the season, but
late season hunts can be re-
warding. The theory is that
many of the hens are now
on nests and the gobblers
have to stay on the move in
search of mates. I’ve been
disappointed on early sea-
son hunts when gobblers
were with flocks of receptive
hens. It’s tough to call a ma-
ture gobbler away from the
very thing he’s seeking: the

Thistles are not popular
plants. Having been poked
myself occasionally, I can
understand why. But there
are advantages to these
prickly plants.
First, many butterflies,
skippers and beetles en-
joy the nectar of the pink
flowers. Also, in northern
regions, goldfinches use
thistle-down for their nests
and wait for late summer to
nest so that this choice ma-
terial will be available. My
favorite thing about thistles,
however, is the fun fluffiness
of thistle-down. It floats so
airily through the sky!
We don’t have nesting
goldfinches here, but I al-
ways enjoy the plethora of
insects visiting the flow-
ers. Many skippers, such as
Sachems and Fiery Skip-
pers, and butterflies such as
Painted Ladies, American
Ladies, and swallowtails en-
joy the flowers. I have also
seen many small- to medi-
um-sized beetles of various
colors and patterns visiting
thistles.
We have several types
of thistle here, all of which
are beginning to grow; some
have started to bloom al-
ready. Thistles are a mem-
ber of the family Astera-
ceae, which also includes
sunflowers, daisies, asters
and goldenrods. According
to Shinners and Mahler’s
Illustrated Flora of North-
Central Texas, various spe-
cies of thistle can be found
blooming here from May to
September. I have already
seen a few blooming in the
past week.
The most common native
thistle in our area is Texas
Thistle (Cirsium texanum).
It is a biennial or perennial
and can grow from 2-6 feet

really a delightful flower to

species in our area.
However, not all our this-
tles are so beneficial. We
have two species of invasive

Musk-Thistle is an an-
nual or biennial plant that
grows from 2-9 feet tall. Ac-

States since the mid-1800s.
