This course was successfully completed as part of my work placement with the Antrim Forum
as a fitness instructor (11/03/2013 - 11/09/2013 and 13/01/2014 - 13/07/2014) qualifying me
to work within a gym environment. The course content included anatomy and physiology
for exercise, how to support customers who participate in exercise and physical activity (e.g.
forming effective relationships and addressing customer barriers), health and safety issues
such as the use of physical activity readiness questionnaires (PARQ)/personal assessment
forms, safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and how to collect information to plan
safe and effective gym-based exercise programmes (taking into account contraindications to
exercise and safety guidelines for special populations e.g. pregnant women and the elderly.

environment

present (employed at Crumlin Leisure Centre from Jan 15 to present).
My duties include:
Welcoming all fitness suite members and visitors by being courteous, introducing myself
and asking if I can assist them. Dealing with each one in a prompt manner or, if already
assisting a customer, acknowledging their presence and assuring them they will be seen by
a member of staff as soon as possible.
Providing a personal assessment form to new customers (or being aware of the conditions
pertaining to exercise referral/condition management customers) in order to target
improvement and maintenance of good health and well-being and/or manage a health
condition.
Managing customer service expectations i.e. providing options to a customer if a particular
service is unavailable e.g. if a specific machine is out of order suggesting an alternative
machine or exercise that produces the same outcome.
Assisting customers to locate various areas within the facility/grounds by either directing
them or personally accompanying them to their destination.
Regularly engaging with customers regarding their programmes and progression.
Emphasizing the importance of proper exercise technique (especially to customers with
medical conditions) and encouraging exercise safety to minimize risk of injury.
Assisting with all enquirers (in person, by telephone or email) and/or redirecting them
to another member of staff if the enquiry is outside my area of expertise. Consistently
requesting feedback on the customers satisfaction with the outcome and asking if they
require further assistance.
Maintaining a personal value of 'treating individuals in the same manner in which I would like
to be treated' by being respectful, well-mannered, approachable and helpful at all times.
Engaging with customers/visitors from a range of diverse backgrounds and abilities/
disabilities e.g. Riverside school (young people with intellectual difficulties), cardiac/cancer
rehabilitation, mental health and COPD groups or young athletes and striving to deliver
a consistently high level of customer service, recognizing the importance of creating an
enjoyable and beneficial experience.
Maintaining good relations with work colleagues, managers, maintenance personnel etc
by being helpful and proactive at all times, working as a team towards a common goal of
producing a smooth customer service experience e.g. in peak periods remaining after a shift
has ended in order to assist fellow fitness instructors when short-staffed.
Producing personalized training programmes, selecting exercises taking into account goals,
any health risks presented, movement and technical ability and/or size and shape, keeping

all information confidential and sharing only with work colleagues so they are aware of any
contraindications.
Setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound) goals with the
customer where appropriate e.g. a new member that is not an experienced gym user.
Familiarizing the customer with the fitness suite equipment and gym environment
(highlighting that the majority of the machines cater for both disabled and non-disabled, and
adapting exercises where necessary).
Being supportive and non-judgmental by building rapport with the customer and gauging
their state of readiness for the session (both mentally and physically).
Providing clear, technically correct instructions, taking into account safety at all times.
Praising and reinforcing good technique and adapting communication style where
necessary (i.e. employing the three main styles of learning - visual, auditory and
kinaesthetic), easing back on customer monitoring as form improves to allow for
independence and growth of confidence. Understanding that good communication is key to
obtaining customer cooperation and understanding, and in building their self-confidence and
self-esteem.
Addressing customer complaints/concerns in a calm manner by actively listening to the
problem, paraphrasing/summarizing main points to obtain clarity, empathizing with their
situation and taking immediate action to resolve the issue, offering an alternative where
appropriate (within professional boundaries and area of expertise). Sharing information
with work colleagues/managers so that they are aware of the situation (depending on the
seriousness of the complaint) and conducting a follow-up with the customer in person, by
telephone or email to ensure they are satisfied with the outcome and/or to offer further
assistance if required.
Being patient, empathetic and supportive, allaying any fears associated with participating
in exercise/physical activity e.g. being aware if a customers anxiety levels are high and/or
fitness levels/confidence is low and taking them to a quieter area of the fitness suite to train
or adapting exercises to match fitness levels.

I have also recently completed a Masters in Sport and Exercise Psychology (Jan 14 - Jan
15 : awaiting result) which has provided me with the knowledge of how to assist individuals
with their exercise and sporting performance e.g. applying techniques that aid in increasing
motivation and confidence or reducing anxiety levels.

Yes I hold a current First Aid Qualification: SR Training NI (HSENI App No.147) First
Aid at Work 16/09/2012 (valid until 15/09/2015). The course content of this qualification
included the aims of first aid (preserve life, prevent the situation from worsening and promote
recovery), the priorities of treatment using the DR ABC acronym (Danger, Response, Airway,
Breathing and Circulation) as a means to treat any life-threatening conditions in a priority
order in both adults and children, cardio pulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated
external defibrillator, the recovery position and the recognition and/or treatment of various
injuries/health conditions including:

This qualification enables me to offer nutritional advice and lifestyle guidance, and plan and
implement training programmes with individuals diagnosed with low risk medical conditions,
being mindful of the symptoms of their conditions and being aware of the possible side effects

Giving customers/visitors a tour of the fitness suite (and other areas of the facility) drawing
attention to special features e.g. Antrim Castle gardens/3G sports pitches.
Illustrating the Smartcard kiosks, explaining how the Smart card records performance data
when applied to the Pulse fitness equipment.
Demonstrating the Pulse fitness equipment with television/ipod docking systems and the
free weights area, highlighting that the majority of the machines in the fitness suite cater for
both the disabled and non-disabled.
Discussing the various price and membership options, providing a hard copy for the
customers perusal along with further information on fitness classes available, including the
15 minute abs blast/whole body blitz classes.
Supplying the Active Antrim magazine to promote activities/events held in the fitness suite,
the Antrim Forum in general, Allen Park and local community centres. Distributing flyers
e.g. to customers and local businesses regarding activities/events in order to promote the
facility e.g. Fit and Active, Gymnastics, birthday parties etc.
Introducing customers to other staff members including fellow fitness instructors, health
matters consultants and membership advisors etc so they can become familiar with the
team and feel comfortable and confident with the service provided.
Capturing contact details during peak periods when the membership advisor is unavailable
e.g. when dealing with another customer in order to obtain and provide any other
information that cannot be given at the time e.g. further details regarding direct debit
payment.
Highlighting membership benefits i.e. use of the fitness suite (including free induction), move
it classes, swimming pool, spa and athletics track, in addition to discounted spa therapy/
treatments. Allen Park golf membership and Antrim Forum Eatery. Drawing attention to
the ability to access free wifi. Promoting activities at Crumlin Leisure including birthday
party events with full use of kitchen facilities, two floodlit 3G pitches which combine to
produce a full size rugby/gaelic pitch in addition to 10 changing rooms and the availability of
conference rooms.
Establishing a clean and tidy working environment by ensuring fitness equipment is wiped
down and that weights, swiss balls, mats and benches etc are returned to their correct place
of storage, adequate supplies of paper cups, rolls of tissue, hand sanitizer etc are available
and bins are emptied regularly. Ensuring that changing facilities and toilets are also free
from any rubbish, adequate stock levels of soap and toilet rolls are available and a high

level of cleanliness is established. Ensuring the facility and grounds in general are in line
with health and safety procedures, understanding that first impressions have an impact on
obtaining new customers and maintaining high standards can retain members (and reduce
risk of injury).
