2010 IFLA Student Design Competition

This competition is sponsored, directed organized by the International Federation of


Landscape Architects (IFLA) and the Chinese Society of Landscape Architecture (CHSLA)
for the 47th IFLA World Congress in Suzhou, China, 28-30 May 2010.

The objective of the competition is to recognize superior environmental design achievements


made by students in Landscape Architecture programs. The 47h IFLA World Congress in
Suzhou, China aims to encourage achievement of the highest standards in landscape
architecture education worldwide. The competition invites submissions from students in
Landscape Architecture programs or other allied disciplines (where a country or university
does not include a formal Landscape Architecture program). Please visit the congress

Competition Topic

The Congress theme is “Harmony and Prosperity---------Traditional Inheritance and


Sustainable Development.” Entries must specifically address the preservation, restoration or
rehabilitation of urban historic sites in the countries in which students live and/or study, and
demonstrate a creative approach and thinking in their projects, so that the value and spirit of
the place are cherished and preserved, while satisfying the needs of modern society, such as
accessibility, sustainability, etc.

1st Prize GROUP HAN Prize for Landscape Architecture ($3,500 US, certificate)
2nd Prize IFLA Zvi Miller Prize ($2,500 US, certificate)

3 Prize CHSLA Award ($1,000 US, certificate)
Jury Awards 9-15 selected entries (certificate)

Prizes will be awarded considering the following criteria:


1. Effective investigation of the competition topic;
2. Illustration of best methods for improving the standards and practices of landscape
architecture;
3. Evidence of reflection and concern for environmental, cultural, historical, and other
contextual issues;
4, Integration of both practical and aesthetic aspects of landscape architecture.

Eligibility
The Competition is open to all students of Landscape Architecture, or allied discipline (where
a country or university does not include a formal Landscape Architecture program). Both
individual and group submissions will be accepted, and each student or group is permitted
only one entry. Broad interdisciplinary submissions are welcomed. The number of members
in each participating group shall not exceed five (5). Professional collaborators and associates
of members of the jury, and their relatives up to the third degree, may not enter the
competition.

Submission Requirements
Submissions must adhere to the following or they will be disqualified:

1. Entries must take the form of four (4) boards as PDF (Portable Document Format) files
which when printed at 100% size would be 45 cm X 90 cm. These PDFs shall be sent as a
CDRom. The four board PDFs shall not identify names, faculty sponsors, or schools of
teams. Please enclose a fifth PDF file consisting of the completed Declaration of Eligibility.
Please also label the CD with your name, school, and project title.

2. PDFs must be titled to indicate a numerical order in which they are to be seen if mounted.
3. The PDFs must include all project information including text, which shall be in English.
Text shall be minimal, but provide a clear and concise description of the intentions of the
project, special issues or considerations, approach and methods, and concepts.
4. Prints and three-dimensional objects will be disqualified.
5. Legends, captions and all other text associated with the submission shall be in English.
6. As entries are received, serial numbers will be assigned, and entries shall be referred to
by number to ensure anonymity during the judging.
7. Submissions received after the deadline date will not be admitted regardless of their
postmark date.

Judges
The panel of judges will consist of five members from IFLA and the local organizing
committee, or their appointees.

Competition Rules
Participation in the Competition implies unconditional acceptance of the Competition Rules.
All Competition entries are the property of IFLA-CHSLA. Entries will not be returned to the
authors.
The works submitted by competition entrants will be placed on exhibition for the duration of
the 47th IFLA World Congress, and may be also exhibited elsewhere at the discretion of the
IFLA/ CHSLA organizing committee.
IFLA-CHSLA retains the right of duplication and publication of any or all materials
submitted to the Competition, and there shall be no obligation whatsoever to the entrants,
beyond acknowledging the authorship of the works exhibited or published.
Submissions received after the deadline date will not be admitted regardless of their postmark
date.
All postage and delivery charges are the responsibility of the entrants. IFLA/CHSLA will not
be responsible for customs or related fees. C.O.D. shipments will not be accepted.

All entrants are absolutely forbidden to have their submissions (or any part thereof) published
in any way prior to notification of the jury's final decision.
The jury shall preside over the competition, and is the sole arbiter at all levels until the
final attribution of prizes. All decisions of the jury are final.
The winner of the Group Han Prize for Landscape Architecture, the Zvi Miller Prize, and
CHSLA Award shall be announced by the IFLA President upon recommendation of the jury.
All disputes related to the competition that cannot be resolved by the jury shall be settled
through arbitration by the 47th IFLA World Congress Executive Committee, who shall
appoint an arbitration panel to settle any disputes.
Entrants are forbidden from requesting any information from members of the jury.
