These release notes provide information on the WD Sentinel

Feature Enhancements:
NOTE: WD recommends that your WD Sentinel DX4000 have the latest Microsoft
Update Rollup 4 (Microsoft KB# 2757013) installed prior to applying this software
update.
Enhanced compatibility with Mac OS X, including Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and Mac OS X
10.8 Mountain Lion. Following features were added:
o System discovery via Bonjour
o Support for Apple Filer Protocol 3.3 (AFP) for data transfer to and from Mac OS clients
o Full support for Apple Time Machine Backup
o Support for managing WD Sentinel DX4000 server via Mac OS Client, with the new
Dashboard application (Requires Microsoft Remote Desktop Client for Mac; user will be
prompted to download the application, unless it is already installed)

Release Notes

Installing the Software Update


NOTE: WD recommends suspending all other activities on your WD Sentinel
DX4000 while performing the software upgrade
Software is an important part of your WD Sentinel Storage Server. WD continues to
improve the product by providing software updates to ensure system continue to
operate to the highest standards. Updating the software enables you to take
advantage of improvements to the operation and performance of your WD Sentinel
DX4000.
Important: Make sure the AC power adapter remains connected during
the software update. A power disruption during the update process can
corrupt the system software. Additionally, the Dashboard may shutdown
during this process.
To update the WD software: From WD Server
1. When an update is available for your WD Sentinel Storage Server, a message
SOFTWARE UPDATE AVAILABLE will display on the LCD screen.
2. In Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, login to the Launch Pad and select
Dashboard option.
3. Enter the password when prompted. This is the administrator login to the Dashboard
on your WD Sentinel DX4000.
4. From the main Dashboard screen, select Monitor and select Software Update tab.
5. Under Check for Updates, select the Check for Updates button.
6. If new software is available, a message will display the available version.
7. Select the Download & Install button and the new software will download
automatically
8. A Software Update message will appear with a request to shutdown the Dashboard
and reboot the server.
9. Click Proceed to continue and the Dashboard will shutdown
10. The update will continue and the progress is visible on the LCD screen. The update
can take between 6 to 10 minutes to complete and the server will reboot several
times.
11. Upon completion of the update, the LCD will return with the Server Name and IP
address assigned. The server is ready for use

To update the WD software: Using USB Drive


1. Download the Software Update (sentinel_firmware_x_x_xx_xxx.zip) file from WD
Customer Support (http://support.wdc.com) to a desire location on the PC.
2. Obtain a USB Drive (2GB or larger) and insert it into a USB port on the PC.

3. Copy the sentinel_firmware_x_x_xx_xxx.zip file on to the root directory of the USB


Drive
4. Safely eject the USB Drive from the PC and insert it into one of the USB 3.0 port in
the rear of the WD Sentinel Storage Server
5. On Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, login to the Launch Pad and select
Dashboard option.
6. Enter the password when prompt. This is the administrator login to the Dashboard on
your WD Sentinel DX4000.
7. From the main Dashboard screen, select Monitor and select Software Update.
8. Under Check for Updates, select the Update from file button.
9. A Software Update message will appear with a request to shutdown the Dashboard
and reboot the server.
10. Click Proceed to continue and Windows Explorer will open.
11. Select the USB Drive previously inserted to the WD Sentinel Storage Server
12. Select the Software Update file (sentinel_firmware_xx_xx_xxx.zip) then click Open
13. The update process will begin and the progress is visible on the LCD screen. The
update can take between 6 to 10 minutes to complete and the server will reboot
several times.
14. Upon completion of the update, the LCD will return with the Server Name and IP
address assigned. The server is ready for use.
Important product update notes:
1. Do not interrupt the software update process. Doing so may cause the
device to malfunction or render the unit unbootable.
