,which
firstoccursinHolinsheadsChroniclesfrom1571,wasgiventothisdiseasetodistinguishitfrom
syphilis,thegreatpox.
MichaelNightingale,apractitionerofTraditionalChineseMedicine,writes:Itisamatterofpure
speculationastowhentheconditionfirstappeared,butitisunlikelytohavedonesopriortomans
establishmentoflargetownshipscoupledwithpoornutrition,overcrowding,lackofsanitationand
inadequatehygiene.Keepingpeople,suchasslavesandprisoners,indisgustingandsubhuman
conditionsmayhavebeenthenecessaryingredientfortheestablishmentofthevirusbutthereis
virtuallynodoubtthattheaforementionedadverseconditionswereresponsiblefortheepidemicsof
smallpoxaswellasforitsendemicnatureincertainareasuntilitsrecentdemise.Itwasrecordedin
Chinesehistoryandwascertainlyprevalentinthewestbythesixteenthcentury.

Smallpoxwasadeadlydiseasethoughnotquiteasdeadlyasonemedicalhistorian,Haggard,
suggests.3Hewrites,QueenMaryIIofEnglanddiedofsmallpoxin1694.Inthecenturyfollowing
herdeath60millionpersonsinEuropediedofsmallpox.
ThepopulationofEuropewas130million
in1762and175millionin1800.Thedeathratefromsmallpoxinthatperiodwas18.5%.If60
milliondeathsoccurredwithan18.5%deathratethenitwouldrequire319,148,936casesof
smallpoxinEuropeandthatwouldbe144,148,936morecasesofsmallpoxthantherewerepeople
livinginEuropeatthecloseofthe18thcentury.4

TheideaofputtingpusintoacutwasfirstintroducedtotheWestbyLadyMaryWortleyMontagu
(16891762),daughteroftheMarquessofDorchester,aleadingWhigpolitician,andwifeofthe
BritishenvoytoTurkey.Sheandherhusbandspentsometimethereandonherreturnin1718she
wasagogwithexcitementthatshecouldintroducetoEnglandacureforsmallpox,adiseaseshehad
sufferedfromwhenshewasnineteen.Shewrites,Peoplesendtooneanothertoknowifanyoftheir
familyhasamindtohavethesmallpoxtheymakepartiesforthispurpose.Whentheyaremet,an
oldwomancomeswithanutshellofthematterofthebestsortofsmallpoxandaskswhatveinsyou
pleasetohaveopened.(Mattermeansdischargeorpus.)
Theoldwomanripsopentheveinthatyouofferherwithalargeneedleandputsintotheveinas
muchvenomascanlieupontheheadofherneedleandafterbindsupthelittlewoundwithahollow
bitofshell.Inthismannersheopensfourorfiveveins.
Theyarewellforeightdays.Thenthefeverseizesthemandtheykeeptheirbedstwodays
seldomthree.Theyhaverarelymorethantwentyorthirtypustulesontheirface,whichleaveno
mark,andthentheyareaswellasbeforetheirinoculation.

Atthetime,LadyMarysnewsofthetechniqueofputtingpusintoawound,atechniqueknownas
inoculation,causedlesscommentthanthefactthatshehadbroughthomeamummy,orthatshehad
dinedwiththeSultanaandbeenboredorhadvisitedthebeautifulFatima,wifeofthepowerful
DeputytotheVizier.
PrincessCaroline,daughterinlawofGeorgeIandlaterqueenofEngland,wasimpressedbyLady
Marysassertions,andwasdeterminedtotestinoculation.Inthesummerof1721sixcondemned
prisonersinNewgatewereallowedtovolunteerfortheoperation,withfreedomastheirreward.Five
ofthesixdevelopedamildattackofsmallpoxandthesixth,whohadpreviouslyhadsmallpox,
showednochange.Encouraged,thePrincesshadagroupoforphansinoculated.Whilethecriminals
werepardonedasarewardfortheirparticipation,theorphansreceivedthesatisfactionofmakinga
contributiontoscienceandwererewarded,insomeinstances,withblindness,lamenessanddeath.6
Aftergraveconsiderationandmorethanafewprotestationsofhorror,theRoyalchildrenandLady
Marysdaughterwereinoculated.Justasroyaltyandthefamoussetthefashiontodaysotheydidin
the1700sandtheideaofinoculationspreadamongtheupperclasses.Thentwopeopledied:ayoung
servantinaLordshouseholdandthesmallsonoftheEarlofSutherland.7Thechurchdeploredthe
interventioninGodswill,physiciansdeploredtheinfluenceofignorantwomen
andthepublic
deploredthespreadofthedisease.
Inoculationwasnot,ofcourse,acureorpreventativeforsmallpoxasitusuallyinducedanactive
caseofthedisease.Unfortunately,therearenorecordsofhowmanypeoplewereinoculated,how
manydevelopedsmallpoxasaresult,orhowmanydidnot.Thetroublewasthatinoculatedpeople
werefullycontagiousduringtheirbriefillnesssothattheycould,anddid,startepidemics.Dr.
Lettsom,writingin1806,tellsusthatwhereassmallpoxdeathsfor42yearsbeforeinoculationwere
72perthousand,therewere89perthousandinthe42yearsafteritsintroduction.8Furthermore,
conscientiousphysicianscouldseetheconnectionbetweeninoculationandtheincreasedincidence
ofworsediseasesthansmallpox,suchassyphilis,tuberculosisanderysipelas.

thuscoveringtheretreatofthe(medical)professionfromanuntenableposition,hisideaswere
acceptedbyallwhoseinterestswerenotconspicuouslyboundupwiththeolderformoftreatment.

EventuallyanActofParliamentwaspassedin1840forbiddingthepracticeofinoculation,largely
because,asAsburymentions,EdwardJennerofferedanalternative.
EdwardJenner
EdwardJennerwasbornin1749anddiedin1823.10ThesonofaprosperousfamilyintheChurch
whoownedasmall,landedestate,JennergrewupintheGloucestershirecountrysidewherehe
enjoyedthestudyofnaturalhistory.In1788hewaselectedasaFellowoftheRoyalSociety,not
becauseofhisexperimentswithcowpox,assomewriterswouldhaveusbelieve,butbecauseofa
paperhewrote,TheNaturalHistoryoftheCuckoo.
At14yearsoldhewasapprenticedtoanapothecaryandsurgeon.Precursorsoftodayspharmacists
wereapothecaries,whothemselvesstartedaswholesalemerchantsandspiceimporters.InJenners
timesurgeonswerenothinglikemodernsurgeons.TheUnitedCompanyofBarberSurgeonshad
beenformedin1540anditsmemberswerelegallyrestrictedtosettingbones,healingoutward
woundswithtopicalpreparations,carryingoutbleedingandundertakingthelimitedoperationsin
thispreanaestheticera,suchasamputationsandremovalofbladderstones.11Itisinrecognitionof
thepastassociationwithbarbersthatBritishFellowsoftheRoyalCollegeofSurgeonsrelinquishthe
titleofDoctorforthatofMister.
JennersetuppracticeasasurgeoninBerkeleybutdespitedescriptionsofhimasacountryphysician
hedidnotearnthetitleofdoctor
.WalterHadwen,JP,MD,LRCP,MRCS,LSA.,saidduringan
addressin1896,ofwhichaverbatimreportexists,NowthismanJennerhadneverpassedamedical
examinationinhislife.HebelongedtothegoodoldtimeswhenGeorgeIIIwasKing,whenmedical
examinationswerenotcompulsory.JennerlookeduponthewholethingasasuperfluityItwasnot

LivinginruralGloucestershire,Jennerheardaboutthelocalsuperstitionthatthosewhocontracted
cowpoxdidnotgetsmallpox.HowthesuperstitionaroseisdealtwithatlengthbyDr.Charles
CreightoninJennerandVaccination:aStrangeChapterofMedicalHistory,publishedin1889and
recentlyrepublished.13InthisbookCreightonsays,Thesinglebondconnectingcowpoxwith
smallpoxwastheoccurrenceofthewordpoxineachnameitwasacaseoftheriverinMacedon
andtheriverinMonmouth.Thejingleofthenameshadtheeffectthatitoftenhasuponcredulous
people,whoseacquaintancewithanymatterismoreverbalthanreal.
Creightonalsogoesonto
observe:Toapathologistorepidemiologist,itisastrulynonsensetospeakofcowpoxbecoming
smallpoxasitislegitimatenonsensetoprovethatahorsechestnutisachestnuthorse.Itwas
reservedforEdwardJennertotakeupthatsurprisinglegend,andmakeitscientificallypassable,
despitetheimpatienceandridiculewhichhisprosaicmedicalneighboursinthecowpoxdistrictshad
metitwith.
Cowpoxisadiseasethatoccursontheteatsofcowsonlywhentheyareinmilk.Thecausativevirus
issaidtobeorthopoxvacciniaitresultsinanuglychancreitisnotinfectiousitis,ofcourse,found
onlyinfemaleanimals.Peoplewhomilkedinfectedanimalsdevelopedpustulesontheirhands,
whichinturn,ledtoswollenglandsandgeneralmalaise.
Smallpox,ontheotherhand,isnotlimitedtothefemalesexnortooneportionofthebody.The
causativevirusissaidtobeorthopoxvariolaitisfoundonlyinhumansitishighlyinfectious.14
ThereisnocorrespondencebetweencowpoxandsmallpoxaslegitimatescientistsofJennersday
werewellaware.Nevertheless,basedonthesuperstitionofdairymaids,onMay14,1796,Jenner
conductedthefamousexperimentthatisthefoundationofthepracticeofvaccination.Ifarational
personwantedtotestthetheorythatapreviousdoseofcowpoxpreventedsmallpox,hewouldsurely
haveconductedasurvey.ButJennerproceededtoexperimentonaneightyearoldboy,James
Phippsbyinsertingcowpoxpusfromadairymaid,SarahNelmes,intoincisionsinhisarm.

Twomonthslater,onJuly1st,1796,JennermademoreincisionsintothearmsofJamesPhippsbut
thistimehesmearedthecutswithsmallpoxpus.Theboydidnotcontractsmallpox.Asnofigures
werekeptinthiseraitisimpossibletosaywhetherinsertionofsmallpoxpusundertheskin
inevitablyproducedacaseofsmallpox.Manypeople,includingchildren,wereimmunetosmallpox
anywayhavingencountereditwithoutdevelopingacaseofthedisease.Furthermore,Twomonths
later,onJuly1st,1796,JennermademoreincisionsintothearmsofJamesPhippsbutthistimehe
smearedthecutswithsmallpoxpus.Theboydidnotcontractsmallpox.
CreightontellsusthatJamesPhipps,evenifherwereperfectlywellontheninthday
asJenner
wrote,hadulcersonhisarmswhichtookweekstoheal.SomewritersclaimthatJamesPhippsdied
fromtuberculosisattheageoftwentyonebutonesourcestatesthatherecoveredandliveduntil
1853.15Jennersson,whowasalsovaccinatedmorethanonce,diedattwentyonefrom
tuberculosis.Tuberculosisisaconditionthatsomeresearchershavelinkedtothesmallpox
vaccine.16Infact,Dr.A.Wilder,ProfessorofPathologyandformereditorofTheNewYork
MedicalTimes,wentsofarastosay,Consumption(TB)followsinthewakeofvaccinationas
surelyaseffectfollowscause.

Jennercontinuedwithhisexperimentsandin1798wroteaboutthem,describingeachcaseindetail
inatexthecalled,AnInquiryintotheCausesandEffectsoftheVariolaeVaccinae,aDisease
DiscoveredinsomeoftheWesternCounties,especiallyGloucestershire,andKnownbytheNameof
Cowpox.ThisisaninterestingtitlebecauseVariolaeVaccinaemeanssmallpoxofthecow.The
termisnevermentionedagaininthetextnoristhereanyrationaleforlabellingcowpoxinthisway
butbyusingitinthetitle,readersareledtobelievethatcowpoxissmallpox.Furthermore,onecould
takeissuewiththeword,discoveredascowpoxhadbeenwellknownforyears.
JennerpresentedhisbooklettotheRoyalSocietywhoturneditdown.Thusscornedbyhispeers,
Jennerpublishedthebookhimself.Ifaresearchertodayfailedpeerreviewandthenselfpublished,
howwouldtheworkbereceived?
Jennercontinuedtoexperiment.Creightonsummarizestheseexperimentsincludingoneperformed
onMarch16,1798.Jennertookpusfromahorsewithgrease,thetermforaninfectionofhorses
hooves.HeinoculateditintoJohnBaker,age5.Althoughwellonthe8thday,Johndevelopeda

renderedunfitforinoculationbyunhappilybecomingacorpse.

Jennercontinuedtopromotetheideathatcowpoxpreventedsmallpox.Morbidmatterofvarious
kinds,whenabsorbedintothesystem,mayproduceeffectsinsomedegreesimilarbutwhatrenders
thecowpoxvirussoextremelysingularisthatthepersonwhohasbeenthusaffectedisforever
securefromtheinfectionofthesmallpoxneitherexposuretothevariouseffluvia,northeinsertion
ofthematterintotheskin,producingthedistemper.

Noteveryoneagreedwithhim.AsHadwensaid,Thecowdoctors(vets)couldhavetoldhimof
hundredsofcaseswheresmallpoxhadfollowedcowpox.

latelybeenfavouredwithaletterfromagentlemanofgreatrespectability(Dr.Ingenhousz),
informingmethat,onmakinganinquiryintothesubjectinthecountyofWilts,hediscoveredthata
farmernearCalnehadbeeninfectedwiththesmallpoxafterhavinghadthecowpoxandthatthe
diseaseineachinstancewassostronglycharacterizedastorenderthefactsincontrovertible.

Unwillingtobelievethathistheorywasfalse,Jennercalledthesecasesspuriouscowpox,
but,as
Creightonwrites,thespuriousnesshadnoothergroundthanthefailuretowardoffsmallpox

Undaunted,Jennerlookedforanothersourceofvaccineandfounditintheoozingpusofinfected
horsesheels,aconditionknownasgrease
.Hisreasoningaboutwhygreasewastheprecursorof
cowpoxmakesinterestingreading
Fromthesimilarityofsymptoms,bothconstitutionalandlocal,betweenthecowpoxandthe
diseasereceivedfrommorbidmattergeneratedbyahorse,thecommonpeopleinthis
neighbourhood,wheninfectedwiththisdisease,throughastrangeperversionofterms,frequently
callitthecowpox.Letussuppose,then,suchamaladytoappearamongsomeoftheservantsata
farm,andatthesametimethatthecowpoxweretobreakoutamongthecattleandletussuppose,
too,thatsomeoftheservantswereinfectedinthisway,andthatothersreceivedtheinfectionfrom
thecows.Itwouldberecordedatthefarm,andamongtheservantsthemselveswherevertheymight
afterwardsbedispersed,thattheyhadallhadthecowpox.Butitisclearthatanindividualthus
infectedfromthehorsewouldneitherbeforacertaintysecurehimself,norwouldheimpart
smallpox.Yetwerethistohappenbeforethenatureofthecowpoxbemorematurelyconsideredby
thepublicmyevidenceonthesubjectmightbedepreciatedunjustly.

Havingreasonedthatthesourceofcowpoxlayintheconditionofgrease
,hewantedtomakea
vaccinefromitsdischarge.Thepublicwasappalledandgivenachoice,preferredthediseased
secretionsfromcowsteatsovertheoozingpusfromhorsesheels.
Variolation,introducedbyLadyMary,wasstillgoingstrongandJennerusedtheopportunityto
deliverpeoplefromtheinconveniences,uncertainties,disasters,andhorrorsofvariolation.

petitionedtheHouseofCommonsin1802,andagainin1807,forlargesumsofmoneytopromote
smallpoxvaccinationspromisingthathisproducthadthesingularlybeneficialeffectofrendering
throughlifethepersonsoinoculatedperfectlysecurefromtheinfectionofsmallpox.

Parliamentgrantedhisrequestbyavoteof59to56andgavehimtheequivalentofhalfamillionof
todaysdollars.Howdifferentpublichealthwouldbetodayhadthefiguresbeenreversed.
VaccinationCampaigns
Vaccinationcampaignsbegan.Itdidnttakelongbeforecasesofsmallpoxamongthevaccinated
werereported.Thefirstresponsewasdenialbutwhenthevaccinatedwereobviouslyafflicted,
Jennerandhissupporterssaidthatthediseasewasmilderinform.Butwhenthevaccinatedcaught
thediseaseanddied,theyhadtocomeupwithanotherexplanation.Renamingthediseasedidthe
tricktheydidntdieofsmallpox,theydiedoftherenameddisease:spuriouscowpox
Despiteincreasingevidencethatvaccinationwithcowpoxpusdidnotpreventsmallpox,thepractice
continued.Physicians,forthefirsttime,attendedthehealthy100%oftheircatchmentareascould
nowbetreatedinsteadofthe10%whohadcontractedsmallpox.AsDr.Hadwensoaptlyremarked
in1896,WhatJennerdiscovered,thoughhardlyoriginalinitsgeneralprinciple,wasthatitpaysfar
bettertoscare100%ofthefoolsintheworldthevastmajorityintobuyingvaccinethanitdoes
totreatthesmallminoritywhoreallygetsmallpoxandwhocannotaffordtopayanything.Itwas
indeedaverygreatdiscoveryworththousandsofmillions.Thatiswhythiskindofblackmailis
stillkeptgoing.
26Overacenturylaterhiswordsstillringtrue.
WhenJennerdiedin1823,threekindsofsmallpoxvaccineswereinuse:1)cowpoxpromotedas
purelymphfromthecalf,
2)horsegreasepromotedasthetrueandgenuinelifepreserving
fluid,
and3)horsegreasecowpox.27
FollowingJennersdeaththevaccineestablishmentusedoneexcuseafteranothertoexplainthe
failureofvaccination:thenumberofpunctureswasincorrect,orthatrevaccinationwasnecessaryor
thatthelymphwasimpure.Thesmallpoxdeathsofvaccinatedpatientsinhospitalwererecordedas
pustulareczema.
Tebbwrotein1884,VaccinationwasmadecompulsorybyanActofParliamentintheyear1853
againin1867andstillmorestringentin1871.Since1853,wehavehadthreeepidemicsofsmall
pox,eachbeingmoreseverethantheonepreceding.

ThereportofDr.WilliamFarr,(18071883),CompilerofStatisticsoftheRegistrarGeneralof
Londonandconsideredtobethefirstdeveloperofvitalstatistics,stated:Smallpoxattainedits
maximummortalityaftervaccinationwasintroduced.Themeanannualmortalityfor10,000
populationfrom1850to1869wasattherateof2.04,whereasaftercompulsoryvaccination,in1871
thedeathratewas10.24.In1872thedeathratewas8.33andthisafterthemostlaudableeffortsto
extendvaccinationbylegislativeenactments.

Thecompulsoryvaccinationlawwasrepealedin1907.By1919,EnglandandWaleshadbecome
oneoftheleastvaccinatedcountriesandhadonly28deathsfromsmallpoxoutofapopulationof
37.8millionpeople.31AccordingtoofficialfiguresoftheRegistrarGeneralofEngland,109
childrenunderfiveyearsinEnglandandWalesdiedofsmallpoxbetween1910and1933.Inthat
sameperiod270diedfromvaccination.32Between1934and1961notonesmallpoxdeathwas
recordedbut115childrenunderfiveyearsdiedfromsmallpoxvaccination.33
Apartfromkillingpeopletheliteratureaboundswithexamplesofthefailureofsmallpoxvaccination
topreventthedisease.
OneoftheworstsmallpoxepidemicstookplaceinEnglandbetween1870and1872,nearlytwo
decadesaftercompulsoryvaccinationwasintroduced.Leicester,withnearly200,000inhabitants,
boasteda95%vaccinationrecordbutitsufferedmoredeathsthanlessvaccinatedLondon.Faced
withthisobviousevidenceoftheuselessnessofvaccination,Leicesterscitizensrejectedthe
programinfavourofcleaningupthecity.UndertheleadershipofJamesBriggs,TownCouncillor
andSanitaryInspector,cleanstreets,cleanmarketsanddairies,efficientgarbageremoval,sanitary
housingandpurewatersupplyreplacedvaccinationscars.34In18923Leicesterhad19.3casesof
smallpoxper10,000populationsimilarsizedWarrington,with99.2%vaccinated,had123.3cases.

InJapan,in1885,13yearsaftercompulsoryvaccination,alawwaspassedrequiringrevaccination
everysevenyears.From18861892,atotalof25,474,370revaccinationswererecorded.Yet
duringthissameperiod,Japanhad156,175casesofsmallpoxwith38,979deaths,acasemortalityof
nearly25percent.Slowlearners,thegovernmentpassedanotheractrequiringeveryresidenttobe
vaccinatedandrevaccinatedevery5years.Between18891908,thecasemortalitywas30
percent.Priortovaccinationthecasemortalitywasabout10percent.36
DuringaruthlesscampaignbytheUSinthePhilippinesin1905,thenativepopulationwereforcibly
vaccinatedseveraltimes.In19181919,withover95%ofthepopulationvaccinated,theworst
epidemicthePhilippineshadeverknownoccurred.IntheCongressionalRecordofDecember21,
1937,WilliamHowardHay,MD,said,ThePhilippinessufferedtheworstattackofsmallpox,the
worstepidemicthreetimesover,thathadeveroccurredinthehistoryoftheislandsanditwasalmost
threetimesasfatal.Thedeathrateranashighas60%incertainareaswhereformerlyithadbeen10

Objectionstosmallpoxvaccinationcontinuedintothetwentiethcentury.Dr.R.P.Garrowpublished
anarticleinaJanuary1928issueoftheBritishMedicalJournalshowingthatthefatalityrateamong
thevaccinatedcasesofsmallpoxinEnglandandWalesin1923and1926inthoseover15yearsof
agewashigherthanamongtheunvaccinated.Thearticleprovokedanumberoflettersincludingone

were5,012casesofsmallpoxwith707deathsinEnglandin1925therewere5,363casesof
smallpoxwith6deaths.Whatistheexplanation?

Merca,Somalia.

ThediseasewasofficiallydeclarederadicatedonMay8,1980.Partofthestatementwas,since
thereisnohumancarrierstateofepidemiologicalimportanceandnorecognisedanimalreservoir
ofthedisease,theabsenceofclinicallyapparentcasesinmanmaybeassumedtosignifythe
absenceofanaturallyoccurringsmallpox.

Noanimalreservoir?Scheibnerfollowsadiscussionabouttheinabilitytodistinguishbetween
variouspoxvirusesmonkeypox,whitepox,camelpoxandthesmallpoxvirusinthelaboratory.
Thesepoxfamilyviruseshavebeenknownformanyyearsbutthepublichasbeenreassuredthat
theyhavenothingtodowithsmallpoxandthatthehumanspeciesissafe.
Since1970,poxvirusesfoundincaptivemonkeyshavebeenisolatedinhumansandanewdisease,
firstknownasmonkeypoxandnowhumanmonkeypox,hasmaterialised.Sowhatisthe
differencebetweensmallpoxandmonkeypox?A1977Lancetarticleinformsusthat,Human
monkeypoxisasystemicexanthema,resemblingsmallpox,thatoccursasasporadiczoonosisin
ruralrainforestvillagesofwesternandcentralAfrica.Thediseaseiscausedbyanorthopoxvirus,
whichistransmittedtohumanbeingsbyhandlinginfectedanimalsserosurveyshaveimplicated
squirrelsastheprobablereservoir.Secondaryhumantohumanspreadbyaerosolordirectcontact
accountsforabout28%ofcases.

Exanthemameansarashandinthiscaseitresemblessmallpox.Apparentlythislookalike
smallpoxisquiteinfectioussincetherewere42cases,including3deaths,reportedinavillagewith
only346inhabitants.43
Thedifferencebetweenthesmallpoxvirusandthehumanmonkeypoxvirusisadifferenceinprotein
structure.Ashealthauthoritieshaveneverworriedaboutthedifferencebetweencowpoxvirusand
smallpoxvirus,whyshouldtheybeconcernednow?Concernedenough,thatis,tosaythat
monkeypoxisnotsmallpox.Theycanthaveitbothways:sayingthecowpoxvirusprevents
smallpoxbutthendenyingthatthemonkeypoxviruscancausesmallpox.
Clinically,thediseasesarethesame.EventheCentersforDiseaseControl(CDC)onitswebpage
admitthatthesignsandsymptomsofmonkeypoxarelikethoseofsmallpox.Theygoontosaythat
thedeathrateinAfricais110%buttheriskwouldbelowerintheUSbecauseofbetternutrition
andhygiene.Itisoddthattheyveneveracknowledgedtheroleofnutritionandhygienebefore
butthatwaswhentheywereadvocatingvaccination.
Onebenefitthathasresultedfromthedeclarationthatsmallpoxhasbeeneradicatedisthat
vaccinationisnolongermandatoryoradvocated.Sothatissomethingtobethankfulfor.
Summary
Dr.BeddowBailyswordsin1936areastruetodayastheywerethen.Hesaid,Itwouldseemtobe
impossibleforarationalmindtoconceivethatafilthyvirusderivedfromasmallpoxcorpse,the
ulceratedudderofacow,ortherunningsoresofasickhorsesheels,andcultivatedinscabbed
festersonacalfsabdomencouldfailtohavedisastrouseffectswheninoculatedintothehuman
body.
Yetthisconceptioncontinuestodayexceptthatpusisnolongerusedinvaccines.Instead
theycontainviruses,deadoralive,formaldehyde,phenol,mercury,aluminiumandDNAbitsfrom
humanandotheranimals.Nevertheless,theprincipleofinjectingtoxicsubstancesundertheskinis,
withoutanyproofwhatsoever,believedtolowerthedeathratesfrominfectiousdisease.
