SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

In the Gospel last Sunday,

according to Mark, Jesus
saw the crowd pursuing him
even to a deserted place and
he found them like sheep
without a shepherd. Jesus took pity on them and
nourished them spiritually with the Word of God,
forgave their sins, and healed their infirmities. After this episode, Mark narrates the miracle of the
multiplication of loaves and feeding the hungry
crowd by Jesus. This incident reminds us that Jesus is also concerned about our physical needs.
The Gospel account of the multiplication of the
loaves also indicates that personal involvement is
needed in carrying out miracles of love, healing,
and forgiveness of Gods people. Andrew knew the
pitiable condition of the people and he did not hesitate to involve himself. He came to Jesus with a
possibility, There is a boy here with five barley
loaves and two fish. Andrew knew it was nothing
for the large crowd but at the same time he was
not hesitant in exploring the possibilities. Andrew
was creatively involved and did everything possible unlike Philip.
One might wonder if Jesus was only waiting for
Andrews suggestion of the boys generous offering to feed the hungry crowd. It is not true. The
Gospel says that Jesus asked this to test his disciSCRIPTURE READINGS

ples because he himself knew what he was going to

do. It also reminds us what prophet Isaiah said in
Chapter 25 that God had already prepared a banquet for his peoplea rich banquet. The multiplication of bread and the feeding of the hungry
crowd therefore fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah.
At the same time, the Gospel reminds us that our
involvement and cooperation is very necessary for
God to work miracle. The account of the multiplication of the loaves carries a powerful message for
us today. In this world affected with deep human
hunger and poverty, we are reminded that there is
bread for all, if only we are willing to share and
have the courage and creativity like Andrew, to
hope for what we perceive in the unlikely.
We need to do our part like the little boy and Andrew for God to do His part. The question for us
is, are we willing to do our part? Are we willing to
step outside our comfort zone to work toward fulfilling the needs of the greater community? It is
true, our sharing may not eradicate poverty or
hunger in the world, in our community, or neighborhood but it can surely make difference in some
ones life. As Blessed Mother Theresa often used
to say, It is the drop that makes the ocean. You
could be that drop in bringing change and difference in someones life.

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

O Jesus,
I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;
For your unfaithful and tepid priests;
For your priests laboring at home or
Abroad in distant mission fields.
For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests;
For your young priests; For your dying priests;
For the souls of your priests in Purgatory.
But above all, I recommend to you
The priests dearest to me;
The priest who baptized me;
The priests who absolved me from my sins;
The priests at whose Masses
I assisted and who gave me
Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion;
The priests who taught and instructed me;
All the priests to whom I am indebted
in any other way
(especially...)
O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,
And bless them abundantly
in time and in Eternity,

Amen
