Stage of art development : Scribbling Stage

My neighbor was a babysitter. So, Farwaz was a child that my neighbor guidance. Hes was
a 2 years old child and very introverted. So, he was less talking and always plays alone.
When I arrived at Farwazs babysitters home, I greeted him with a smile and called him out
to me. I then showed him a piece of A4 paper and a box of color pencils. He walked to me
quickly and I noticed a sight of excitement and curiosity on his face. He tried to touch the
box of color pencils as it was placed in my hand. I then explained to him what the box I held
contained and what it was meant for. I then told him to draw me an animal and handed him
the piece of A4 paper. He took it from me and sat on the floor. I placed the box of color
pencils beside him on the floor. I opened the box for him revealing the variety of color
pencils that he could choose from. He was excited. He then took a color pencil out and
began with his art work.

While he start to scribble on the paper, he very concentrate on hes work and face sight in
serious. During hes scribbling the paper, I try to ask him what animal he draws, but he
didnt answer me and keep doing hes scribbling. So, I see he so concentrate, I also stop
asking him question and continue observing him in silent. In the observing, I saw he use a
lot of bright color and scribble on the paper and will think what the next color he want to
use. Then, while Farwaz choosing the color pencil, he feel like all color he likes, but dont
know which want is he mostly like. So, he took all color he like and put beside around him.
But he didnt use all he took. Lastly, Farwaz scribble finish whole the paper, he try to find a
new clear place to continue scribble. So, I turn around the paper to let him continue, but hes
babysitter say Farwaz time to sleep, so I also stop him and treat him tomorrow continue.

My drawing tool is color pencils. Because I feel color pencils is more safety to them and I
bought the colour pencils was had certified by international laboratory, so is safe to use.
Farwaz was didnt not hold any pencil before. So, he doesnt know how to hold the pencil
correctly and nicely. During hes scribbling, Farwaz keep changing hes hold pencil styling,
sometime he hold on the top of color pencil, sometime he hold the end of the color pencil.
And the hand style sometime hold like fist, sometime hold in 5 fingers head. So, there was

have different style while Farwaz doing hes scrbbling. After that, Farwaz was finish hes
scribbling. Then, the art is come out like random scribbling. I and Farwazs babysitter try to
ask Farwaz what animal he drew, but Farwaz didnt say what hes drew.

Farwaz was at the scribbling stage based on hes age range. So, in my observation I saw he
was enjoying exploring and manipulating tools for sheer motor sensory pleasure. Some
more is he also enjoying the art strictly as a sensory experience and there was also
exploration of hes media trough all he senses. And in this developmental stage the child
may even look away from page as he draws. Then, the characteristic that I see in Farwaz art
work is aimless and disordered marking that goes in many direction on hes work and marks
may be horizontal (left & right), vertical (up & down), diagonal, curved lines, may be on top
of each other. Some more the marks will make in continuously and the tools are held in
various ways.

The role of Farwaz art work is in relation to the holistic development of physical
development and intellectual development. In physical development is train hes finger
motor skills and eye hand coordination. So, that he can continue to the next development on
hes motor control and planning. Then, the intellectual development is develop hes sensory
learning, experiential, active and discovery learning. Conclusion, Farwaz was just only 2
years old, so hes still have a lot of development need to develop, if he has the chance to try
more new exploration, he will get more learning experiences from the processed.
