Social equality denotes as an unbiased treatment that befits individuals in a

community for example, gender. It has come to the existence due to the social
framework that revolves around inequalities. The Universal Declaration of Human
Rights 1948 has declared that everyone has and is entitled to equal dignity and
rights without distinction of any form such as gender. Sexual harassment is a
prominent problem of social inequality, especially directed to women in
professional setting.
According to the Employment Act, sexual harassment is defined as any
unwanted conduct of a sexual nature, whether verbal, non-verbal, visual,
gestural or physical, directed at a person which is offensive, humiliating or is a
threat to his/her well-being, arising out of and in the course of his employment.
(The Star, 2015). Sexual harassment in this civilized era happens in direct
communication or virtually. Catalyst reported an overall persisting statistics of
cases despite being prohibited in many countries. The statistics illustrate cases
of sexual harassment has become a direct threat to the social equality towards
women in workplace.
As sexual harassment persists in the workplace, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of
1964 in the United States has started the legislation work against this conduct.
Since then, Sex Discrimination Act was enforced at 1984 in Australia. Cobb
claims that within the past few years, Hong Kongs Sex Discrimination Ordinance,
Indias Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, Singapores
Protection from Harassment Act 2014, South Koreas amendment to the Equal
Employment Act and several other countries has made sexual harassment at
work illegal. In Malaysia, the All Womens Action Society is working together with
the Joint Action Group for Gender for the enactment of a standalone Sexual
Harassment Act. The laws makes the conduct illegal thus by enforcement by law
against offenders simultaneously creates awareness as well as the prevention of
sexual harassment.
Awareness should be strengthened and promote highly among the people.
Launch regular education and training campaign is one of the prevention on
sexual harassment in the workplace. It can be achieved by understand, learn,
consider and deal with it. Besides, the training staff and management should be
effective to learn and instill the issues in a respectful way. In China, a nongovernmental organization, Women Watch China is a network in protect the
womens equality and sexual harassment which provide a platform for women to
speak out their rights. Also in Malaysia, All Women Action Society (AWAM) fights
against sexual harassment and gives protection for the victims and witness.
Having appropriate education and campaign gives a better understanding and
the skills to deal with it that become more safer and productive
environment.(Kaufman, M. 2006)
Sexual harassment is a serious issue but does not discriminate all white and blue
collar employments as this happens in all companies. Providing training
campaign to employees and relying on the law does not merely solve this
problem. All government and non-governmental organizations must be proactive

by providing emotional and physical support, and discuss this issue as a part of
working routine. The victims phycology is greatly affected by sexual
harassment. Professional relationships at workplace will be bitter thus the
liability of the company will have a negative impact. Every working woman
should realize that it is time to fight for justice against sexual harassment.
